    It struck me within the first five minutes that Rory was 32, the same age as her mother in the first episode in the first season. Her mother, who at age 32, had single handedly raised a 16 year old child accepted to a prestigious private academy, owned her own home, ran an entire business and planning to start her own inn, was in college at night also, was heavily involved and respected in her community, and even had a far more respectable love life complete with commitment and decent men who committed to her too. I found how they wrote adult Rory so disappointing, especially compared to her still striving and acheiving mother...and how well that mother raised her.

      I never liked the way that Lorelai rode Logan's ass for being fed with a silver spoon, when, in truth, Rory was just as spoiled and entitled -and it shows in the way they portrayed her as an adult. I always felt like Rory just expected things to work out in her favor (even when she disregards someone's feelings) and when they didn't, she just whined the entire time.

But in the revival although she clearly still has problems she is one of the few characters that finally starts to grow. Meanwhile we get the hard reality of what small towns do to many people in the rest the characters. The whole point the revival was too show the other side of the fantasy of small towns and more generally the destruction of the 90s fantasy world.

      Tammy I feel like that was done on purpose though... Rory was always praised on how grown up and mature she was as a teenager, it serves that she would have taken that to heart a lot and stayed at that "mature" mindset, making it easy for her peers to outgrow her in return. It also adds in a little bit of the "child prodigy" phenomenon, where extremely smart children and teenagers tend to grow up to become mediocre adults.
      It fits that the adult Rory is lost and mixed up and didn't live up to her full potential; she was so smart as a teenager that she never really picked a direction and stuck to it. She was told she could do anything and kind of cracked under the pressure of that. Now she's scrambling to fix her life and decide what she really wants to do, one mistake after another.

    I actually thought Lorelai’s reaction to Rory wanting to write a memoir about them was in character. She’s always been touchy about her upbringing and I can’t imagine her wanting that in black and white. Rory had the nerve to throw a tantrum when she didn’t even bother to consider Lorelai’s feelings. There were a few times in the original show where Rory ignored her Mother’s wishes when it came to her parents. This isn’t surprising because Rory has always been a bit spoiled and her Mother rarely says no or objects to what she wants. The book was advice she took from Jess who has a history of being careless with people’s feelings, including Rory’s. She’s been having a hard time finding work and she found no issue using her Mother’s story to make a buck. She can’t write a memoir without including Lorelai because there would be no story. Rory’s life is not really memorable; she hasn’t had a life yet.

Plus with so many other people that'd be referenced Lorelai was completely right to be upset and not want that in an actual book form. Even the way she's structured the story to start with Lorelai leaving her parents says it all.
      Throughout the show, the writers have hinted at Rory kinda wanting to be Lorelai or even thinking she is Lorelai. So Lorelai's experiences are hers. Rory isn't a complete person on her own, and she's regressed completely. It may not be a happy ending but I like that the writer didn't shy away from showing that actually Rory is a bit weak, book smart but not the smartest, and very indecisive.

Why was she so hell bent on having such a depressing ending for the show!

    I totally would love if they made a show about Emily. I'd LOVE to watch about her younger years, such as college-life, leading up to having Lorelai. She stole Richard away from his then-fiancée, Pennilyn Lott, and Richard's mother HATES her with a passion. Emily is such a perfectionist, and always gets her way. My favorite thing about watching Emily is when she starts opening up and showing vulnerability, but she realizes it, and snaps back into boss-bitch-mode. She's manipulative, demanding, controlling, and doesn't let anyone phase her. I'd say she's the best part of the revival who TRULY received a perfect closed chapter.

    I do have to say, I think Richard's death took a huge toll on Rory. She was successful, writing for the New Yorker and traveling overseas for work before he died, then after his death she just wasn't the same. I think his death impacted her and she's flailing without her guidepost. As much as her mom means to her, her grandfather was always the beacon she followed. He always supported her. Rory is lost without him. Emily grew and was able to learn to live without him, but never forgetting him. That's why Rory chooses to write in her grandfathers study. she needs him. I think they will get Rory back on track with the book she's writing and the baby. Which I believe will be a boy named Richard.

He is more mature & wiser now. I love that he respects Luke more & he cares more about what Rory wants. In the earlier seasons, he was bratty, disrespectful, impulsive & only cared about his own needs. He wanted Rory to drop out of Yale & run away with him, not caring that she would be leaving behind her own dreams & her mom. He was completely in love with Rory and in Season 7 you really saw him grow up from an entitled boy to a more responsible man. He broke away from his father and the business and set out on his own. He never would have been engaged to someone he didn't love and have Rory on the side. He would not have worked for his father's company. I think what felt weird about it for me, was the way it was executed the second time around. I felt this was pretty on-brand for Paris, though. She was always a mover and shaker, going overboard to achieve her goals no matter what it took. She could've been exceptional and it took less time for her to get to where she was. She could've started on her breakthroughs/plans while studying and/or somehow the residency/subspecialist time was shortened cos she was just that good. idk but yeah I don't expect shows to stick to realistic timelines to the T especially for a side character. Plus didn't she say she also had an LLB and other stuff? I imagine she did a million things at the same time to achieve as much as possible. Very Paris.

    My main problem with the revival was since it was written for the original series 10 years ago most of the plot didn't make sense for what it probably should have been. For example Logan and Rory still sleeping together? I feel that they wouldn't still be seeing each other 10 years after their breakup. The revival just seemed off and I think the characters would have developed differently in 10 years.

      I never realized this storyline was written to follow directly after the original show 10 years ago... that makes SO much more sense. That makes Rory's pregnancy SO much more meaningful, too. There's a huge difference between 30 year old Rory making a mess and getting pregnant... and Rory getting pregnant in college. That would change the entire context of the situation, given Lorelei got pregnant in highschool and Rory would've been practically a kid still like she was when she had her... 30s Rory getting pregnant was not that impactful?!

There are some slight differences, i.e. Logan actually knows how to be successful and actually does have money, and Jess--well, we don't know much about Jess at this point, but he is more inline with Rory compared to Luke and Lorelai's relationship...and Rory will have the priviledge of a mom who she has a good relationship with compared to Emily and Lorelai's relationship...but I supposed it is possible for history to repeat, regardless.

    I think the question of Rory's lack of professionalism was actually answered very very well in the show. More than once Rory was told by her mother that she was used to everything falling in her lap. While Rory didn't let this go to her head as a teenager and college student, if things continued to work out this way for the next 9 years-especially with things like her New Yorker article-then it kinda makes sense that Rory might start to think a little more highly of herself. Furthermore, it was already well established from the beginning that she only wanted one job and wasn't taking anyone else very seriously, and this ties into her general arrogance in the revival. In general, I think it was well set up. You can hate it, but it still certainly makes sense.

    • @girlwhomustnotbenamed4139
      @girlwhomustnotbenamed4139 4 роки тому +9

      I get what you're saying but to me it still doesn't make sense. Rory might have been unfamiliar with academic failure which makes it difficult to handle when it happens but she had always been incredibly overprepared for everything, down to the last random school test. She even started to get less idealistic in the 7th season of the original series after Logan's dad told her she didn't have it. She stopped catastrophising one person's negative opinion and coped well as a journalist and editor at Yale. The fact that after spending 9 years in an admittedly competitive profession where she has even had some success she would be totally unprepared for that Condé Nast interview is incomprehensible. I get they tried to write Rory as less than perfect but she was just fundamentally inconsistent with the person we saw grow up in the original series. Not to mention the way she acted in her private life.
      I think the writers had no idea what to do with her, even though there was so much to work with. They could have made her react totally differently to the same situations and it would've been interesting to follow her development. This way when she says "I suck" at the end, I couldn't but agree with her.

    One of the things I hated was Lorelai's reaction to April needing money. While Rory was privileged in the retrospect that money was not an issue because she was spoilt by her Grandparents and Mother and apart from the DAR job after dropping out of Yale, Rory was not treated like "Oh she should get a job". April was not so fortunate in regards to money and jobs and opportunities being handed on a silver platter, plus Rory has a longer bond with Luke and he would not react saying "Oh, Rory should get a job" if she needed money.
    The way Lorelai reacted was as if April was lesser than Rory and that She is still not so accepting of April. Lorelai and Rory both treat April as if they merely tolerate her. Rory: Spoilt/'Golden Child'; April: Outsider/special treatment for Rory lesser treatment for April.
    Luke's reaction of "I'll take care of it" to Lorelai's hypocritical blasé unfazed "She should get a job" retort made me happy though, it's like he saw through her favouritism.

    Unpopular opinion: I actually liked Lane's ending. She finally struck the balance between having a good relationship with her mother, her identity and her background with making her own independent choices where it mattered. Her working at Kim's antiques was just her finally becoming secure in the fact that her mother is a hard-working businesswoman and there's nothing wrong with that. It made a lot of sense from an immigrant standpoint because we all grew up irrationally hating everything associated with our parents and our heritage. You only learn to make your peace with it as an adult when you've made your independent decisions and you find that what your parents did actually made a lot of sense. I loved that her ending captured that realism.

    For me, the worst part by far was the injustice they did to Lane's character. She was vivacious and ambitious and all the series gave her was a lazy, kind of dumb, boyfriend and two children. It honestly just felt like a tragedy, and all I was hoping for was for Lane to achieve her dreams despite adversity, but we did not get to see that at all. I know "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", but this character had to struggle with a lot and the show doesn't even comment on the disappointing nature of her storyline. Also the lack of discussion about abortion in the series despite the absurd amount of unplanned pregnancies is a bit scary, I would've liked to see Lane at least consider it.

Also they seemed to do that for most of the show- Rory is the "apple doesn't fall far.." in the most depressing ways- she's alone with a baby and basically jobless (Gazette and first book aren't going to make her a sufficient income- at least not for many years...) she had so much more opportunity than her mom did when she had Rory- she loved Logan and considered marrying him but now she's copying mom-for what? Lorelei wouldn't have even wanted that for her. The whole og series is about how they made it even though it WASN'T IDeal. :( Disappointing.

    I didn't enjoy the revival AT ALL. And the saddest thing is that I think it's because it was so realistic... All the unfulfilled expectations, people changing in the way we wouldn't expect or like them to. That's exactly what happens in life and I didn't really expect to see real life on the show. I wanted to be uplifted and feel better, just like when watching the original show. I wanted romanticism, magic, love, and the smell of snow. Feel so sad after watching it:(

    I had a die hard family member fan tell me the fan theory that the memoir Rory wrote was the regular season run of the show.
    And the Year in the Life was her real life.
    It explains why everything goes so well for her in the regular run, but nothing does in the revival.
    Now I’ll rewatch the show with that in mind for a while new take on it.

    To be quite honest, I didn't enjoy the Revival very much. I only enjoyed Luke and Lorelai getting married. The things I didn't like were :
    1. Rory was being very cruel and selfish. She was having sex with a man that was engaged to somebody else, all the while when she was also dating somebody. She didn't even care about how Logan's fiance would feel, she only cared about herself and what she wanted, so she slept with him anyway multiple times, despite knowing that he's engaged. She just didn't care. She didn't act like Rory from the original series, and it seems like her character development went down instead of up. Plus, She didn't even care about how rude she was being to Paul! She just wanted him to go away!
    2. I didn't like that Jess wasn't in the show very much!! He deserved so much more than 3 scenes. I'm disappointed because I LOVE Jess, and I really wanted Jess and Rory to get together.
    3. I HATE that Rory is pregnant. She's following exactly in her mother's footsteps and being just like she was when she was young. Rory and Lorelai are similar, but they don't have to be exactly the same.
    4. The musical was a waste of time that stopped being funny after the first joke. Personally I think they just made it that long to fill space.
    5. I think that Rory changed Logan and made him a better person in the original series! He was beginning to be much better than when we first met him, and that was because of Rory. But then in the revival it's like he went back to being that awful guy he was when we first met him. He cheated on his fiance and acted awful. His character development vanished.
    Overall, the Gilmore Girls revival was a big disappointment to me and I kind of wish it never happened because nothing good came out of it.

      Rory lost her virginity with Dean who was married to another woman and Rory didn’t care. She slept multiple times with Logan who was engaged to another woman and didn’t care this time either. She also cheated on Dean with Jess.
      I see a pattern here...Rory not giving a shit about other people’s feelings.

    Top three things I hated:
    1) The Musical
    2) Whatever that was with Christopher and Rory
    3) Not having an actual wedding
    Don't get me wrong with #3, I LOVED the scene of them getting married and all of that, but I always wanted to see an actual wedding. I wanted that closure of Emily being able to see her daughter get married, and the whole town FINALLY seeing Luke get Lorelai

      I know right! I was so disappointed that Emily didn't get to be there. Throughout the whole series you could see how Emily has always just wanted to be a part of Lorelai and Rory's life. It always made me sad how Lorelai would act towards her and would blame her for so many things when everything Emily did was of love and wanting to have a normal mother-daughter relationship. The fact that she wasn't even at the wedding was the high point for me. Poor Emily...

      I am not sure why they felt they needed to add so many musical numbers to the revival since that is not how the original was. It didn't flow with the original series. The scene with Christopher and Rory was awkward although after finding out what was going on, at least some of the dialogue made sense. The wedding was incredibly disappointing. The dance and them running through the props were weird and I think that they should have had a true wedding so Emily and Sookie and Jess could have also attended. Sookie and Emily not being at Lorelai's wedding was awful. My fourth thing I hated was Rory's love life. She was sleeping with an engaged man, dating a man she didn't even remember his name and had a one night stand. I felt like instead of growing up and learning from her mistakes she was just doing the same thing and it made me not like her so much.

    What I couldn’t figure out, is if Sookie was going to be leaving the Drogonfly permanently, why didn’t they write it in to the story that she sold her part of the business to Michel? He’s clearly discontent with his place in the business and professionally to the point that he wants to leave. Why wouldn’t he become an owner. That would feel like natural progression and a nice closure for him in the story.

She was a prodigy her whole young life in a safe and controlled environment which is school. This is her major breakdown. If the series continues, I'm curious how she handles it.

Also no way the 2 of them would be seriously considering having a baby at 50, that was so out of character.

      My thoughts exactly!!! This pissed me off so much. Somehow it was okay to wake up Lane and Michel (sp??) in the middle of the night but Emily wasn't??? Sure, she probably would've initially been put off by doing it that way, but she would've realized that Lorelai never does things "how she's supposed to." I'm sure she'd have felt so happy to finally see her only child get married!!!! Emily's arc was incredible and she changed in a positive way... and basically deserved so much better.

    I was really mad about Rory's storyline. Is this the best the writers could do? Jess wrote a book and it got him nowhere, so now they want Rory to do the same? Rory went to some of the best schools, so she should at least be as successful as Paris. If Richard were alive he would be so disappointed. Speaking of Pairs, it seems that she is the only person that matured. Everyone else is stuck doing the same thing they were doing where season 7 left off. I was also mad that the death of Richard didn't bring Lorelia and her mother closer. If that can't then nothing will 😪WE NEED MORE EPISODES TO FIX THIS MESS. Don't get me started on Rory's love life... I'm team Logan, but the affair made no sense since she rejected his proposal. I hope there are more episodes to come.

    • @concettasorvillo3719
      @concettasorvillo3719 7 років тому +27

      Well, I agree but about Paris... actually she , a grown up woman, a mature woman that hids in the bathroom of her former school because she saw the boy she had a crush on in the high school. And she is almost 30. I mean... really? Plus, she treats her children like her mother has done with her and she has suffered a lot in the pat for that. Paris would never have done it.

    • @mzshayzzz
      @mzshayzzz 7 років тому +28

      conce I didn't mean it that way. I meant when season 7 ended we saw Paris graduate, ready to begin her life. On the revival we saw that she had kids, jobs and even looks mature. Although she divorced we saw that life went on for her. That can't be said for most of the other characters.I expected and wanted the revival to be like season 5 of One Tree Hill. Season 4 they all graduated and when season five returned it was a time jump, but the characters matured. Their lifes wasn't on pause. They had flashback scenes to fill us in on what we missed. Like why Peyton & Lucas wasn't together when the show returned and why Nathan was in such a dark place. The revival should've showed a flashback of Rory and Logan getting together after she turned down his proposal. They talked about them getting together but never got into detail about what was said. I would've loved to see what Rory said to Logan and how he took it. The writers of this revival should've took notes from the writers of One Tree Hill. Although OTH had a time jump from season 4 to 5 it still flowed so nicely together. Everything made sense.

      the affair, while disappointing, is one of the few things that makes sense. history (aka past flames) tends to repeat itself, and rory and logan were always in love. she just wasn't ready to get married at 22. i honestly think that if logan had waited another year or 2 to propose she would have said yes. or, if she had gotten knocked up at the end of season 7, that there would be room for her to say yes at any point during the ten year interval and revival
