"The Fiend" Bray Wyatt vs Seth Rollins took place at WWE Hell in a Cell 2019 and it turned out to be one of the most bizarre Hell in a Cell matches in WWE history.
Wyatt's Fiend character had been building a lot of momentum as he headed into HIAC to wrestle Universal Champion Seth Rollins. Firefly Funhouse segments and a match against Finn Balor at SummerSlam left viewers wanting more as Bray's popularity reached new heights in a short period of time. WWE fans would cheer for The Fiend heading into the Hell in a Cell bout, but at the end fans chanted for refunds.
This video looks at the journey towards HIAC 2019, The Fiend's debut, and the match itself.

Wasn't just this. This was the thing that truly did it, but in 2019 Seth was pretty Twitter crazy and he shared A LOT of pretty unpopular opinions, before he started feuding with The Fiend he started getting jeered and go away heat a few times, this match though definitely threw napalm on him though. His babyface title run didn't ever really get off to a good start though, he spent the first two months teaming with Becky in a programme against Lacey Evans and Baron Corbin.

The problem for me with this was when they debuted The Fiend they pretty much backed themselves into a corner by pushing him straight into the main event. He actually didn't need to be in the main even as the character could have been a spectacle. I get the fact that they wanted to capitalise on the media buzz the character was getting. They screwed his whole persona up though and of all the ones that have come through in the past decade in WWE both of these guys have been some of my favourites as they both have good personalities that can change and adapt to their current situation.

Quite honestly I thought we were going to see more matches between him and Finn Balor. Vince pushed him too hard to where his last feud with Randy Orton made no sense. Then Vince didn’t want to hear any advise from the man who created this character because if it didn’t come from Vince it won’t be good, and fired him when Bray asked to make modifications on the burnt suit that was uncomfortable. Pretty sure Vince would’ve destroyed the WWE if he was still running it now.

The problem for me is that he should have been like early undertaker, never in the main event spot but was considered a main event, even when he was in the main event it never last long. Wwe pushed the fiend right to the main event and they hit the brick wall that was reality. If the fiend won congrats you now have to completely get behind him 100% even when the fans turn oh him, if he loses than the character is damaged.

Let's say reigns drop the titles and bray wins it. Then what? What's that gonna accomplish? What's a title gonna do to bray? The moment bray stops being the newest toy hhh bought you guys gonna want him to drop the title to new nxt or return wrestler. Bray don't need titles. Bray needs to finally figure what bray is. Not what bray is in 2022 but what bray in in general. He need to build his character in a way that will allow him to have a long future with it before it loses its "allure" and he needs to find the right opponent to cement his legacy the same way undertaker did with mankind and kane instead of being back on defending titles with random guys while still trying to find his foot in a long term character. Stop acting like reigns losing is the solution to every wwe problem cause it isn't

This match was the final nail in the coffin for my brother and I. We immediately cancelled our WWE subscription once the match was over. This was such a poorly booked match altogether that it astounds me how anyone thought this would go over well on the creative team. I'm hearing a lot of good things now that Hunter is in control so who knows maybe I'll come back. But this was definitely a dark time in the WWE's history where it just seemed like nobody won. Bray Wyatt with a mask on is a different character? Didn't Finn Balor do the same damn thing like 5 years before this? He came out in a mask and painted himself and called himself the fiend too, or something like that.
I know they rehash everything but you can't rehash stuff like that.

    King: "That's it. He's a midcarder."

The worst things to happen to The Fiend’s character was to make him invincible and to make him a champion. Every Horror Character needs a weakness and motivation that fits their stories. Them making him a Champion and invincible at the same time when we know every Champion has to lose was death sentence.

It's incredibly easy to play "woulda, coulda, shoulda" in hindsight with just about anything in wrestling, but it was a big mistake to make The Fiend "just another wrestler" involved in the title picture and moving feud to feud. As cool as it was initially to see basically a slasher villain from a horror film come to the WWE, there's no longevity in that and it had a built-in shelf life. The move was to have the Fiend horrifically terrify and destroy everything in its path for a year leading to a final showdown with a top baby face at Wrestlemania. Then stop the angle. Have Bray return to his old self after that final (and only) defeat, repackage again, something. Anything but have him invade John Cena's subconscious (which is also somehow visibly televised on PPV?) and enter into a feud of the month to do occasional jobs.

I hated when Rollins said the beast slayer died when he faced the fiend when clearly the booking killed Seth with the swiftness. Like those somehow made two massively over stars look horrible in one night.

I always think that fans are too harsh on the finish. I agree that how a refree can stop a hiac but...
The main damage was the match itself, how on earth a guy is kicking out of 11 freaking curb stopms!! On top of that chair shot, ladders, tool box on head and fiend is kicking out on 1!! But it's not over because after the match it looks like fiend is not hurt 1perc.
The main problem of this match was the way fiend was booked! I don't get the all the hate towards the finish only.
It's just like making a movie with a budget of 3B and when the studio loses money then people are pointing towards the story, climax etc like come on! How can anyone think that things could be positive if the budget is that much. 🙄

Bray's characters are interesting, but after a while it's hard for him to go where they need to. The fiend looks scary as hell, but at the end of the day he's not going to do anything worse than beat someone up. I feel he'd be better served working in another medium, because he's got some genuinely gripping ideas, they fizzle out because the stories can't go where they need to.

It was this match that marked my decision to stop watching WWE. I originally had major hope for AEW, being a huge fan of cruiserweights since childhood seeing WCW, both Matt and Jeff Hardy's careers, and many of the NXT headliners like ricochet, Alister Black, etc. So when I gave AEW a chance I was emensely disappointed after seeing a a few Kenny Omega v. Jon Moxley matches, some Chris Jericho matches, and the Miro match where he used the gutted arcade machine as a weapon and pretended to strain to lift it. After all that I just have only gotten my content from YT channels. I may be ready to give WWE another shot with what potential changes that have happened and ones that may be happening along with the return of Bray Wyatt.

Great insight into two modern superstars though.

Matches like this are why for such a long time modern wrestling was unbearable unless you were deep in the niche. Great talents, terrible booking. Ironically these days it seems WWE and AEW are trending in different directions from how things started but overall things are getting better.
