Moonring is an indie video game developed by Fluttermind, the studio of Dene Carter, a veteran developer who had previously co-created the Fable series. Released on September 28, 2023 for Windows as freeware, Moonring is an open-world, turn-based fantasy role-playing game evocative of the Ultima series. Upon release, the game received praise from critics for the effective imitation of classic role-playing titles and the scope and detail of its open world, exploration gameplay and narrative, with several publications naming the game as one of the best indie titles of 2023.
Moonring is a 2D role-playing video game in which players explore an open world and procedurally-generated dungeons in the land of Caldera. The user interface is split between a top-down depiction of the world on the right and a menu on the left that displays a text-based logs of game events and player statistics. Events in the game are turn-based, with characters and enemies moving at the same pace as the player. Interaction and combat is undertaken by bumping into other objects or enemies. Health is managed with a system in which characters have a health bar and regenerating 'poise' that buffers against attacks before taking health damage. The game features a skill and progression system based on completing devotional tasks from five gods that represent a particular skill. Completing these tasks, such as discovering areas, defeating certain enemies or undertaking certain actions, awards the player points which can be spent to unlock skills and increase skill levels. Players can engage in parser-based dialogue with all non-player characters by typing in key words, with highlighted words in responses providing hints on dialogue topics.

I really enjoyed playing stuff like Ultima 2, Sword of Fargoal, and Temple of Apshai on my cousin's computer.
And I have played this for a bit, a few months back. Haven't really gotten anywhere in my quest, but I made it past the tutorial on Yarrow Farm, at least, so I get the basics. Would be interested in a full let's play series!
    👍👍👍

Speaking of Wizardry, I personally like Wizardry 8 since it allowed me to play as a bunch of furries (despite the fact that I haven't got that far)

The algorithm fed this video to me, as it seems to have done with a few others. I'm only about 13 minutes in at this point, but I REALLY appreciate that you take the time to read everything! I put videos like this on in the background while I'm working, and it's good to know that I'm not missing flavor text or lore that's displayed on the screen.
It's also awesome that you take the time to theorize about character relationships and the world, as well as explaining the mechanics of what you're doing. Well done, can't wait to see more from you!

Moonring is amazing, I'm still baffled by the fact that it's completely free

Was just watching the later chunk after viewing Lorelie. Love the lore that is set up here and the conversations about the topics make it feel more like a living world and leas like exposition. The UI feels cluttered with half the screen being taken up by that menu section, but that might only be from a viewer's perspective and not a player's. This game does have a very good tutorial like set up with this first area and dungeon to get you used to most of the gameplay loop.

I love the lore and how it is set up too, I kept a notepad and wrote down fun facts and important lore, I know the game does it for you, but it's fun.
This amount of UI is decently common in similarly styled games, and some older titles, although it's almost never as organized.
Yeah the tutorial is great! It's extremely helpful if you don't know what you are doing, and not a pain if you do

18:16 - Guineas is pronounced ‘gin-Es’ not ‘gin-E-as’. It’s an old British coin and its name comes from Guinea in Africa where the gold that the original coin came from. Its value fluctuated depending on the value of gold but eventually was standardised as 21 shillings.

All of these words are fake. I refuse to acknowledge British tender.

@@toastedringtail even though the Guinea comes from a time of non-metric money? As a red-blooded American you should be all for anything non-metric. 😜
