I've owned that lens from new and still use it on my K-5 to this day along with the Pentax-A 28mm. Two superb "prime" lenses probably my favourite two.
Excellent video. Informative and entertaining. I’m very close to selling my Canon gear and going over to Pentax. I was a Pentax user in the 1970’s and 1980’s. I still have some lenses from those days. I think your pictures have swayed me to return to Pentax. Many thanks for posting this video.
Hey realize this video is old, but thanks for putting it together! My Dad gave me a bunch of Pentax lenses, and I just got a K-1 to shoot with them. I have the Pentax-A version of the lense here -- 135mm f/2.8. Looks a lot like yours. Super good quality - it's my favorite lens of the bunch right now...
Thanks. I’m surprised at how good the bokeh is on this lens. One of my cameras is a K7...amazing what that camera offered in its time. I’ve Been buying manual vintage lenses. Recently did some portraits of my wife with one of my zooms set at 100mm. Challenge is nailing down the focus...what looks perfect on the camera shows up differently on my computer or large monitor. But once focused, the pics are wonderful. Be safe.
Man that K-1 sure looks nice. I use my old manual Takumar lenses with an adapter on my K-5II. Also a 50mm f/1.7 M lens. Real nice images with those old lenses. Fun to use and inexpensive. Sweet images by the way. Nice work.
My Ricoh KR-5 SUPER II was my first 35mm camera that I got in 1994! It used K-mount lenses. When I moved to Digital, Pentax was the logical way to go. I could still use all the glass I already had with the new DSLR. WIN!
Love this! I currently have the K3 and have purchased a couple old lenses...lots of fun trying those lenses and it forces you to think about what you taking a picture of...I still have my old Pentax Super Program and a couple lenses from that camera
Thanks for the review. I also have this lens, and I like it a lot. I recommend adding a significant hood, to improve contrast (quite a lot, under sunny conditions). Personally, I use a reverse ring + a set of extension tubes. Combined, these form a hood that perhaps is not visually appealing, but it does the job.
Using the old Tamron Adaptall 2's on my Nikon D200's at moment. Being an old codger I actually enjoy manual focus/using the aperture ring though admittedly not easy to focus without a split screen/fresnel screen in poor light. Watching this I wish I had gone the Pentax route as I have a soft spot for the older Pentax lenses. Thanks for posting!
I have several cameras. I own a Pentax ist DS and other ones. Been using the old manual lens for a long time. They far more awesome than that kit lens. I was sure glad to see a video on this.
135mm is my most favorite focal lens to work with! I can not remember a 135mm lens that I didn't like across many a maker. My dream next lens is the Nikon AF DC-Nikkor 135mm F/2D lens... Man!!
You should include a link to the actual photos in your description. It's difficult to tell how sharp the pictures really are when we're viewing it in a compressed video.
Thank You leehaze 1 I began shooting with Canon. The rebel 2000 slr, and the 30d dslr. At a friends recommendation switched to a Nikon d200. Upgraded to a Nikon d7100 with three lenses that I have bought. I live in Massachusetts and today it is snowing. Plan to go outside once it stops and shoot scenic pictures. The more videos I watch that you make, I find myself wanting to have a pentax setup that is so weather sealed so that I could be out there right now and not have concerns about moisture. Anyways thank you for broadening my photography perspective. Will write again once purchasing a pentax.
The pix were great. I liked the music (had headphones on) even though it didn't go with the pix. I'm trying some Pentax M42 screw-mount lenses with my EOS-M6. The adapters are a little off, but are adjustable, so I think I'll get 'em dialed in quickly.
EyE love Taks, have and use a fairly substantial collection. Mine, tho, are of the m42 variety, more asthetically pleasing physically and otherwise ( unmatched buttery smooth focusing alone seals the deals for me)
Since 2012 that i work with Pentax K5 and K5IIs. What are the main differences between my cameras and the K1. It as the same AF speed? It works with old lenses designed for vintage FF cameras? Does the megapixels reduce if you use any other lens instead of this really expensive new lens designed only for K1? Thank you
You can watch full frame vs crop camera videos. The main things you will get is more shallow depth of field (DOF), a lot better ISO performance. Your da lens will work in full frame mode from around 135mm +. The 300mm da* is great in full frame mode. Wider da lens can be used in crop mode the mp will be 15 so pretty much the same as your K5. The k1 will work with any Pentax K mount film lens in full frame mode. There are even some 90's models with AF. I have reviews on a few on my channel.
Just for giggles, I recommend that you try a few m42 mount Super Takumars. Get a real pentax adapter and treat your K-1 just like a Spotmatic. The color and rendition of the classic lenses is a lot of fun. By the way, generally the Super Tak 135/2.5 is better than the k-mount version.
All the other Pentax K-mount 135mm's are also better than this one, but of course more expensive. But used within its limits, one can get great shots with this lens (the main problem is of course the lack of multi-coating).
It depends on the lens. Any lens with a manual diaphragm has to be set normally. Any K mount lens with contacts (-A, -F, -FA, -DFA, -DA) will auto set when set to A on the aperture ring. These go back to the ME series of Camera. If you are using an old M42 Takumar, the aperture is manual, and it's easy to use AV mode, because the aperture closes as you focus, but with early (No suffix) K and -M lenses you need to use manual mode and preview, or set the green custom button to TV SHIFT where it will stop down and meter for you at the hit of a button. It sounds clunkier then it really is.
Alaric Paley Hmm. I have 5 vintage lenses atm that I wanted to use with the K-1. 4 M42 old primes (two of them have A suffix, but I guess It won't work since those aren't PK A lenses), and 1 PK mount manual prime from Zenit 212K. So all of these can be used in Av mode, but I'll have to press the green button for the camera to adjust exposure (i'm guessing it'll adjust shutter speed and ISO) every time I take a shot? Or they are only usable in M mode? Sorry, it's hard to understand how this would work because on my system I just attach a lens and set the aperture I want on the lens, camera does the rest of the work (shutter speed & iso) in Av mode. Kind of a bummer really, I guess it's because of the mirror in front of the sensor, camera can't analyse amount of light available without doing some sort of extra calculation step.
Timur Dzhambinov M42 screw mount lenses use a push pin for auto aperture. The K mount use a lever. You might see how this wouldn't work. Anything that has a manual aperture that stops down in its own (Helios, early Zeiss, Early Takumar) will work in A/V mode. If it relies on a pin or lever, you will only get wide open metering. At this point, once you hit the shutter a k mount lens will stop down and result in under exposure. The issue isn't that the camera can't meter, it's that the lens stays wide open on the older K and -M series on proper K-mount cameras by design. You hit the green button or flick the DOF/metering switch to close the lens down and meter. There's a separate lever in the lens that would communicate the aperture position to the camera body, but aperture degrees changed at some point so it was dropped for electronic control (-A and later)
Alaric Paley Ok now I get it, thank you! Yeah, I didn't think m42 A lenses would work, my one PK lens has the level on the back, very different to the m42 A pins. Thanks again for a clear and complete explanation. Hope they can ship more bodies soon, I've been monitoring adorama, amazon and b&h and it's always on back order.
What do you think of an old Pentax-A smc 50mm 1:2 (the seller used it for Pentax K 1000) Will that be suitable for the new camera as well ? Thank you, your input is so unvaluable. In my country, camera lenses are not cheap at all, but with Pentax, it might be very interesting to dig into markets... we don't have a kind of ebay here, but more like bargain street markets or a web page, that pple sell their items. Cheers from Uruguay.
great lens. I have not found an old manual focus Pentax-A film lens that I don't like. Buy the 50mm f/1.7 Pentax-A if it is only a few more dollars but they are both great lens.
Thanks a lot for the suggestion Lee, I will definetely let you know when I get the camera... I spent several hours thinking ... The canon 7 d mark ii is amazing for my wildlife photography, but I love being truth to my own essence and the fact is that I love photographing ...just what ever I can, moths?, faces? statues? buildings? sunsets? LOL what ever.... Yet and as I live a a spot in Uruguay where the ocean is just 10 min away from home imagine that birding is a very important activity here... so...may be I still keep my markii while starting with the new P1.... I just hope the transicion will be less difficult than when I came to Mac from Windows LOL ! Cheers!!!!
So how do you take an image? I have tons of Pentax bodies and lenses but have never used a digital camera in my life. Am I too old to start? It's in full manual mode and it's possible to get focus affirmation by some means. ( Since it's an SLR you can't just focus in the viewfinder?) How do you get the camera to give you a shutter speed if the camera doesn't recognize what aperture the lens is in?
When you put the lens on an aperture smaller than wide open is it stopped down with these cameras ( and the viewfinder is dim) or is automatic aperture like a film camera where the lens is wide open until you take the exposure at which point it is stopped down to your setting? How different is using "A" lenses?
I think that’s a huge plus that was missed: by virtue of the IBIS, _every_ lens that you put on is, effectively, stabilized! You can’t say that about almost all modern Nikon or Canon. (I think one of the fairly recent Nikon Z’s have IBIS.) I shoot 40k-60k photos/year so the IBIS is a big deal. The percentage of photos I reject after I get home (I.e. if I don’t catch a mistake while on location) is less than 1% because I can rely on the system.
Hey so i looking for a lens like this for a full frame sensor (sony a7sii) i don't mind getting adapters for the mount. looked up your camera and it is a full frame, but just curious, when using this lens are you cropping at all to avoid vignetting? some full frame cameras automatically crop down to aps-c size with certain lenses so just wanted to make sure before i buy something like this .thanks!
Well they just released their first full frame digital so of course their modern selection is going to limited but there will be more to come out soon especially with popularity of the K-1 sold out at many retailers. Pentax K mount system is the best working with film glass. Pentax-A glass will allow you to adjust aperture straight on the camera, no auto focus but you get beep conformation. As far as modern coating being tons better not really. I hope to release a video soon of the coating comparison.
Yeah, the 135 with A, but without AF can be found, but it is expensive. AF seems to be non-existing. I like the 135, but I will stick with my 45 year old non-A, even if it is a little bit inconveniant.
To save you time: 1. In Menu setting "C 4 --> Disable" ; 2. Use Manual mode (full manual control only); 3. Use the push in magnifying glass to manually focus; 4. You can adjust the aperture but not see the exposure before taking a shot. Strangely, a Canon DSLR will let you do that, but not a Pentax.
@@leehaze1 I've tested this in manual mode and yes you can control the aperture manually, but there's no way to figure out the exposure without taking a shoot first whereas you can do that on a Canon camera (I own both a K1 MkII and Canon MK III). I've adjusted the comment accordingly!
Great clip and shots, thanks for posting. Tell me, when we mount an old K lens to the K1, does the camera default to APS-C crop mode, so, in your case, the 135mm becomes a 200mm equiv, or does the K1 replicate the exact focal length of the lens (135mm in this case)? I'd love to buy a whole kt of the SMC A K mount lenses, I just don't relish being forced to use them in crop mode (I want the 40mm pancake to remain 40mm in focal length, not 60mm)?
I've been using Pentax for about 35 years - the K-mount system is one reason I've been sticking with them!
This really helped me moving from a Pentax film camera to the Pentax K1, thanks
you are welcome. thanks for watching
I've owned that lens from new and still use it on my K-5 to this day along with the Pentax-A 28mm. Two superb "prime" lenses probably my favourite two.

You are welcome. thanks for watching.
Outstanding Lee. I've just learned about zooming in in live view to focus my lovely old glass. I'm really grateful 🙏
Happy to help!

How do it work with a range like 80-200 mm who do set focal length.?
I would just set it around the middle 130mm unless you know you are going to be at 200mm most of the time. Thanks for watching
Ok, how is your menu that colour scheme?
Yea yea lenses, everybody has some.
But never seen my pentax menue those colours.

any film simulations on the K-1?
what a mount based on k-1 pentax ?
