Looks nice. Doesn't sound like it's got quite as much guts as a P-bass, though it might be the mic on the amp.

I agree. Carvin makes some nice equipment, but this bass, at least on this video, just doesn't have the signature Precision punch and fat tone in my opinion. Could be the way the pickups are wound, could be the mic. I've heard Squires that sound better on UA-cam videos.

daveb40361 sounds great to me. though I will admit it's hard to transfer the tone of an instrument through youtube...

i live here in San Diego, and i go to the Carvin factory store at least once every couple of months. these basses sound more like a P-Bass, than an actual Fender P-bass. at least the 2 i demoed, good nasty P growl, but also subtle if you need it. birght, punchy.....a P-bass sound basically.
if i go to Guitar Center, i don't even look at any Fender basses, they play and sound dull and lifeless. except for the vintage ones, they just seem to sound and play better. shoot, some of the Squier's I've played have more life than their higher priced "brothers".
so, IMHO, the PB basses of Carvin, rock!

@@daveb40361 I have the Carvin PB4 with just the split coil pickups, and it has the Pbass tone and growl as good as any Fender P bass, but with more consistent from bass to bass.

The additional J pickup actually takes away from the true P bass tone. The necks on these are great and so are the pickups. Great finishes too. Wood type affects the weight so choose carefully.

Question to bass players: Can I use a 4 string with the larger strings to emulate a 5 string rather than buy a 5 string? Any problems with this? Other than losing the thinnest/highest string?

It is a BEAD setup ie. Use a b-string, e, a , and d strings as well. Although I have never used this setup I recall seeing some string sets built that way. You will likely have to modify or change the nut though, but that is easy.

Yes, all you need to do is have the bass set up for those gauges.

@@imandan1966 Whats funny is most non Fender brand P basses sound better than Fender. And actually more consistent from bass to bass compared to Fender. Not to mention the feel and playability of Carvin / Kiesel and other brands blow away Fender.

@@mariosangermano5709 utter bollocks. I've never heard any Kiesel that can compare to a Fender P. Never mind the dreadful resale value of Kiesels. Go sell crazy someplace else
