I’ve never played the classic wolfensteins, but new order completely blew me away back in 2014. And now it’s my favorite FPS series on par with doom. I’d say doom has better shooting while wolfenstein draws me in with story and atmosphere, also makes me feel like James Bond.
I love MachineGames’ Wolfenstein and really like the story. If someone doesn’t like the story and just want a modern shooter with the classic feel, there is always the new Doom games.

@@manavbws When I play games, I like to, you know, play a fucking game. If I wanted to watch a movie, I'd go do that. I can appreciate a good story, especially one that contextualizes the gameplay in a rewarding way. But at the end of the day, I need the story to service the gameplay, no the other way around. Couldn't agree more Wolfenstein return to castle was one of my favorite games ever, played it back in 2002 and was blown away ,definitely great childhood memories there, but what I played the most was Enemy territory because of the multiplayer and it was just as amazing.
I love how Old Blood is bit of a retelling of RTCW. The overall plot is basically the same. All the sets like the cable car, the nearby village, the dig site, and the catacombs are all taken directly from RTCW. The characters Kessler and Agent One are also from RTCW. Helga von Schabbs is a reimagined Helga von Bülow, and Rudi Jäger is reminiscent to Hans Grösse. The super soldiers and zombies from Old Blood are also very similar the ones from RTCW. BJ even makes a direct reference to Deathshead's X-labs.
My TOP 5 of this awesome franchise: 5. Return to Castle of Wolfenstein 4. Wolfenstein 2009 3. Wolfenstein Old Blood 2. Wolfenstein New Colossus 1. Wolfenstein New Order
@Mediocre Dispense honestly i just love new series of Wolfenstein so Old Blood, New Order and New Colossus they really come first. And as for rtcw, the first chapter is great, but then it's getting average for me
11:05 actually thats mostly why I love Wolfesntein series. Its like Dishonored - you can go full stealh or just blast through the enemies, the game is designed for both types of players.
Completely agree, Return to castle Wolfenstein is by far the best of this list. I played it hundreds of times from 2001 and it was much more than amazing, a milestone of the genre. I also liked a lot the more recent Wolfenstein 2 the new colossus.
i dont know ... i played 2009 and really enjoyed that . i think it holds replay value better than the other titles as well . thats been my go to WS game and i see there are others out there who agree with me .
I fell inlove with thr Return to Castle Wolfenstein and still play it occasionally. I think what I liked the most about it was discovering the hidden rooms, etc.
I just recently played through Return to Castle Wolfenstein for the first time since 2017. I forgot how fun it was to fight those super soldiers, but the evil science behind them is far more terrifying than the supernatural stuff.
I tried to look forward to it after growing up on RTCW. It does pull some neat tricks like the hub world having differing combat scenarios and the upgrade shop, but it still felt like it missed its mark as a soft sequel with the plot.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is the best. I love the level where you parachute into the forested area. I also love the STEN gun WITH the suppresor. That and the paratrooper machine gun.
The stealth levels in RTCW are frustrating but once I practiced them they became much more fun. I look forward to them now. I can understand guys who are all combat 0% stealth would find them boring but they're not objectively bad.
I always found those ones frustrating, particularly the one in the forest, but never really took the time to practice them. Sounds fun to replay those ones just to practice.
I love Machine Game’s Wolfenstein. I haven’t played the second one or the other spinoffs yet, I’m going the first one again and then I’ll play the other ones.
my first wolfenstein game ever was the old blood and it did not disappoint....very good gameplay with gold challenge modes after you beat it on Über. And it has the best ambience. Its especially good if you can speak german and understand every joke, too. I played after it, New Order and expected a bit more of that game, not bad either, but old blood got a better pacing and ambience. I also like its gameplay much more like i like climbing more than making holes in boxes. The Zombies were actually pretty well done, heck better than the nazi zombie movies i watched. The endboss was weird, but i prefere his mechanics more than the simple boss fight of new order. Now i have to play colossus and new blood, honestly i do not expect much after the peak that old blood was.
My favorites are the ORIGINALS, from the 1980s: Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein. Both were for the Apple ][+. Yes, I am old (53), but those two games were really “where it all started.” BTW I agree, Return was a real blast!
Enemy Territory >> all Fair enough, it’s not a single player game. But it’s still great. Amazing to play on public servers and for clanwars. Personally the best FPS game I ever encountered, is Medal of Honor - Allied Assault. No supernatural, just straight up an amazing WWII shooter.
You don’t kill Hilter at the end of Wolfenstein 3D. He is episodes 3 boss. The boss of the last episode (6) is General Fettgeisicht. I don’t want to be a pedantic d-bag pointing out the “actually it’s” but I feel that’s a pretty massive oversight for someone that is ranking Wolfenstein games especially considering the importance for the devs not to make Hilter the final boss. I completely agree with you about Wolfenstein 2 the new colossus. Edit : just realized this video is 2 years old 😂
I played RTCW a few years ago and, despite it being a very old game, I loved it so much.... perhaps it's even the shooter i've liked the most ever (and I've been a games player for 20 years...). Now I'd like to play another Wolfenstein, but looking at the gameplay on youtube they seem quite different from RTCW... which one is closest to it?
I’m one of those people who has a positive outlook for The New Colossus. I think it’s a really good game narratively and gameplay-wise, despite some of the long cutscenes (though I will say they were enjoyable). I really don’t like the argument many people have to say about it, claiming it’s an SJW game because of characters like Grace Walker and Rip Blazkowicz, or how it’s not as dark as the New Order. Like, come on, it’s a game about killing Nazis. I came in looking to kill some and I got what I wanted, along with a good story. While I do think it’s not as dark as The New Order, I see this game as a "turning-point" for the story. Now that Deathshead is killed, there’s hope to turn everything around and undo what the Nazis have created, and I love that aspect; there’s hope to overthrow the Third Reich and take back the world from those monsters. When I played the Wyatt playthrough and he gave out that speech to the American people, that was hope; not only that, but it was major character development. Wyatt started off as a frightened, inexperienced private, and slowly became a resistance leader fighting the tyranny that is the Third Reich. Everything went to shit, and he rose above it, including everyone else. Overall, I think The New Colossus is the best sequel to the Wolfenstein franchise under MachineGames, and I hope to god the third installment won’t be as great of a train wreck as Youngblood. That game, to me, doesn’t exist.
Based on the gameplay of all the games and your opinion, I almost feel like I don't need to get another wolfenstein game because the design of the modern games just do not appeal to me, and return to castle wolfenstein is by far the best one
RTCW is surprisingly underrated despite its status as the last great old school shooter. Whenever you mention Wolfenstein, people will only recognize the alt timeline games instead.
I never finished Spear of Destiny or Young Blood, but with the rest I pretty much agree with you. I don't think the gameplay in New Colossus is better than New Order. It's good but not better because I didn't find the new enemies particular fun to fight. Also for a large portion of the game you only had 50 HP which was dumb. But I loved the different locations like the nuked New York and New Orleans. Not introducing nazi-aliens in Area 51 was missed opportunity. And that first level where you kill nazis in a wheelchair was weirdly awesome.

But as a really good side: The story is as good as The New Order, the action is amazing, its gameplay is definitely the best and characters are great too. The New Order is the best imo because it has everything: Very well combat, great weapons, good music, good characters, and an iconic final battle agains and iconic villain. New Colossus' final combat felt like if in NO had ended when William killed Bubi and Deatshead had died in a cutscene Someday I will try RTCW
great review, yepp without a doubt Return to castle wolfenstein prefered it on ps2, also have the xbox 360 version ,where there are subtle level differences ,my fav game of all time hands down
people need to understand that machine games didn't really make youngblood. arkane studios did a lot of it, the dishonored guys. it's just as much dishonored as it is wolfenstein. if you approach it like that it's a whole lot of fun.
8. Young Blood. (Terrible terrible terrible game) 7. The original game (never played it but I know I doesn't have 2 annoying teenage girls in it. No woke propaganda forced on me. So yeah I can 99.999% know for a fact it's better than youngblod.) 6. Wolfenstein 2009 (it got to weird. Loved the guns tho) 5. Wolfenstein 3D (alot of fun) 4. Old Blood (too short, wish it could have been longer. Story was great. Villains went anything special. Should have been more like RTCW) 3. Return to castle wolfenstein (instant classic, this game introduced me to wolfenstein when I was very young. Still holds a special place in my heart) 2. New colosuss. (Very hard. But addicting. Too bad you can't replay missions or restart campaign with perks :/ ) 1. New order. (Greatest game ever made. Enough said)
So I’m just recently coming off my first full play through of new colossus, a game that I enjoyed but honestly would say I don’t think I’m going to replay it. I did play return to Castle Wolfenstein a month or two back and it was a great time and even three main episodes for Wolf3d. NO and OB are excellent games, both worth a replay and would love to play 2009 but its not available. I don’t know how I would rank the games, i need to replay half the entries but for what i have played this year, unfortunatly New Colossus is the worst (though the gameplay is a really great fps) and for best either Return or the New order or hell Old blood.
I wanna get into the series, I've beat doom 2016 and doom eternal. But I don't know what games of the series to play first. I heard there's a prequel but can anyone tell me which one I should play first?
I've played the games for the first time not too long ago in order of release starting with new order, old blood and then 2. That's how I preferred to first play them and I recommend playing them like that.
I remember return to castle Wolfenstein and was a bit bored with it to be honest. Had it for the PC when it came out. I found the way the enemies die after shooting them to get repetitive. They all do that dramatic fall. And by the time it got to the “dig site” levels I think I lost interest. I have it for the 360 and may try it again.
Wolfenstein is a okay games I rather play dooms then this, the only problem I have with the Wolfenstein is the gameplay and how to switch between weapons or knifes they feel clunky especially with what controller you are using feels like a nightmare
bro doesnt understand the damage system in Youngblood and call the enemies spongy. You need to use heavy ammo on heavy enemies and light ammo on light enemies.
I feel like that explanation for why Spear of Destiny is terrible might sound petty or nonsensical to someone who has never played Spear of Destiny, but it's just so spot on. Spear of Destiny fucking sucks.
I was first introduced to New Order and I loved it. Played it twice. I then played The New Colossus, which I also enjoyed. I then learned of The Old Blood and played it somewhat recently, enjoyed it but I prefer the first two that I mentioned. And lastly, I played Youngblood... I am not enjoying the game. The characters are too "hyper" for a lack of a better word (although I do get they are young, but not what I expect that are children of BJ). I hate that they added levelling up system, tougher enemies that require a certain gun to take away their armor and the level design is not the best. I do like the gunplay. I was at first interested in the exploration part, but the enemy respawns often and you have to kill the enemies again in an area you already cleared... Just lost interest.
I would put The New Colossus way lower because it's just not good. The story is actually awful because if you're a fan of the New Order it completely shits on everything it did. Characters are cartoonously stupid the villain sucks even tho she was fully developed in the previous game and of course the cut scenes are way too long. The gunplay I actually found to be a downgrade because of gun variety and balance, in my opinion the old blood had the perfect balance and fixed most of the problems with The New Order and if you want some points of why the gunplay is worse: no decrease of movement speed while Duel wielding, overpowered assault rifle making all another weapons trivial, 50 health for half the fucking game, weak enemy variety while dumbing down existing enemies (super soldier), and worst of all the god awful level design. The Level's while pretty are genuinely boring and not well made, being way too open and genuinely lacking attention to detail unlike the New Order and Old Blood. And on a last note stealth is borderline useless because of its new systems they implemented and as someone who enjoyed stealth in the previous games this is awful, I genuinely tried to stealth a room for an hour (specifically beginning of the Venus level) when I realize how badly implemented it is, enemies having way too good of an eyesight and able to detect dead bodies made it genuine impossible to stealth and with the drawn out kill animations make you a sitting duck stuff in either stealth or combat scenarios. So yeah for me TNC is not just bad it's probably one of the worst games i EVER played.
I'm conflicted on this I think The New Order and New Colossus are tied because the fast and intense gameplay of TNC is more fun but like you said the story and levels were an embarrassing compared to TNO. I thought some parts were kind of funny like when you have to talk to Hitler, but the dark and horrifying tone of the TNO was completely lost and you couldn't really take it serious anymore. I hope they try to bring it back and ground the story again for the end of the trilogy because it could never be as emotionally provoking as the first one.
Agree with this list for most part; although I can't stand the supernatural part at all in any games. The beginning of RTCW is 10 out of 10; until you start to face zombies, which totally take you out of the mood. I wish that game would end once you escape; instead of going through tombs and cemetery at one point. Young blood can be fixed removing the cut scenes and the dialogues; it is not a bad game; just a very bad setup and unlikeable characters

The New Order is the best imo because it has everything: Very well combat, great weapons, good music, good characters, and an iconic final battle agains and iconic villain. New Colossus' final combat felt like if in NO had ended when William killed Bubi and Deatshead had died in a cutscene
Someday I will try RTCW
Wolfenstein is Best creeping round castles silencer equipped,
Then Dual wielding when it inevitably kicks off 👍
great review, yepp without a doubt Return to castle wolfenstein prefered it on ps2, also have the xbox 360 version ,where there are subtle level differences ,my fav game of all time hands down
They added enemy territory on steam and there are quite a bit of servers left.
people need to understand that machine games didn't really make youngblood. arkane studios did a lot of it, the dishonored guys. it's just as much dishonored as it is wolfenstein. if you approach it like that it's a whole lot of fun.
The moon misson in new order had me on my knees
Why do your hands look like that in new colossus?
8. Young Blood. (Terrible terrible terrible game)
7. The original game (never played it but I know I doesn't have 2 annoying teenage girls in it. No woke propaganda forced on me. So yeah I can 99.999% know for a fact it's better than youngblod.)
6. Wolfenstein 2009 (it got to weird. Loved the guns tho)
5. Wolfenstein 3D (alot of fun)
4. Old Blood (too short, wish it could have been longer. Story was great. Villains went anything special. Should have been more like RTCW)
3. Return to castle wolfenstein (instant classic, this game introduced me to wolfenstein when I was very young. Still holds a special place in my heart)
2. New colosuss. (Very hard. But addicting. Too bad you can't replay missions or restart campaign with perks :/ )
1. New order. (Greatest game ever made. Enough said)
You can play og wolfenstein in new colossus on a arcade machine
@@well8250 but you play as a Nazi fighting the kreisau circle...but yeah everything else is the same
@@well8250 wolfenstein 3D is in colossus I don't believe the original wolfenstein is
This dude explained everything
If they could make RTCW like the recent Quake 2 it would be beyond awesome!!!
New colusses is a masterpiece
The wheelchair gunning mission was crazy. I got lost tho & left it alone
In my idea, the Wolfenstein II new colossus is the best (story, graphic, music, game play, gun shooting, game length, action...)
I wanna get into the series, I've beat doom 2016 and doom eternal. But I don't know what games of the series to play first. I heard there's a prequel but can anyone tell me which one I should play first?
New order should be first if you are only going to play the new ones
@@TotallyTubularJonathan Thank you!! And yeah I don't think I have access to the older ones.
I've played the games for the first time not too long ago in order of release starting with new order, old blood and then 2. That's how I preferred to first play them and I recommend playing them like that.
@@jjhongxina8236 Thank you!! Did you like them?
@@landonsmith8614 hell yeah I did. Out of the three, I like new order the most.
Spear got the cyberdemon at the end tho
What about Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein?
Return to castle is best!! I agree
No Wolfenstein 2009 is best
@@SilvioBehrend nothing on RTCW level
Hell yeah the old blood my favorite game in the serios
wolfenstein enemy territory still works online :) .. not many servers but still a few
I play RTCW once every year since 2014.
Noway you rank that trash number 1. I guess this list is just based on nostalgia.
Probably enjoy Youngblood as well
I played rtcw on mobile and i liked it
Not all about what you like or want from a game some people love Wolfenstein 3d
“Hell yeah dude!!” 🧐
Such a garbage opinion !
Skill issue
I just finished TNC an i agree with alot of what you say however i did have alot of fun and really liked the game overall
New order is so fucking shocking rescuing your friend’s from a literal death Hollowcaust camp was so immersive that i skip the prequel all together
