Why are they learning Western etiquette though? I'm sure Chinese aristocracy have their own etiquette, after all they used to have so many emperors
Only problem is that the rich kind of disappeared during the communist era. Now nearly everyone that is rich in China is nouveau-riche, so the only really modernly applicable example they have of how to be high class is western.
China only very recently joined the modern world. It makes sense that they wouldn't have their own well defined rules and high class culture yet.

Well that’s actually interesting, most fine dining uses victorian era etiquette, a lot of french influences in it. Because of this we have very strict rules as well as expectations- in the west. But her market is NOT the west her market is the neo rich in the east. There are no rules set in stone quite yet because culturally it’s probably in creation!

Even people in the US are paying big money to learn this etiquette as they climb up the success ladder. Why must Chinese people become "western refined" when the traditional non-manchu culture was pretty refined and even better than the swiss or french. Also why use european porcelain when chinese porcelain (old) is even better? Rich Chinese kids (usually the 2nd generation rich) spend lots of time in prestigious western school just so they can boast about the fact that they can afford it. Overall the new generation doesn't think very highly of their own culture but idolise anything "western". Whenever I'm in China and the topic of me being an European born Chinese comes up, it calls for lots of "wow" and an immediate social status boost. It's pretty peculiar and a bit sad I reckon

As someone with Eastern roots...this saddens me. I know everyone has their own opinion on rich lifestyle, but from a continent where humility, simplicity, and unconditional happiness laid the groundworks for Eastern philosophy systems...the descendants of my ancestors seem to have forgotten their past. We have a saying: to forget one's ancestors is to be a tree without its roots.
Just trying to fit into the fake ideals of western European society and it's truly sad. They think if they act like the best type of white people, that they will accept them. They won't. Did you not hear the part where Sarah Jane Ho egotistically proclaims that the younger generation is more "westernized," as if co-opting western culture and assimilating into it is somewhat perceived as a superior step upwards in the established social hierarchy? How about the part about using forks and knives instead of chopsticks. The west has set the standard simply because the United States transformed into a pre-eminent power during World War II. The west has gatekeeped cultural standards, and policed non-western countries for "backwards" culture, so much so that many east Asian nations have developed pronounced inferiority complexes to the west.

Why do you think she wants to teach the rich people of china about this etiquette? It is because that people in China are actually willing to learn this etiquette! There are 3 types of rich people - the people who inherit money, the people who make money through a stable income, and the people who get 1 billion in a single day. The 3rd type usually is consisted of gamblers who just were really lucky and got that much money. I think that her 12 day program is trying to teach the type 3 rich people about the required etiquette in say, a Michelin 3 star restaurant. You cannot go to a Joel Robuchon restaurant and leave bones on the ground, can you? This is actually how bad the Chinese etiquette is nowadays. Of course China used to be a booming nation but now, just go to China and see what it is like.
When you become very rich, you will realize that your elegance will help your reputation. If you sit properly, dress nicely, and look like a stately woman, people will think that you are very elegant. Some people do not want others to think that they are animals, and to look like an animal is much easier in gourmet restaurants. Right now in China, the standard of elegance is the same with the western standard when it comes down to rich people. When I see how wealthy westerners eat, I personally think that they look proper and elegant. But why do Chinese want to look like westerners? Long answer short - it is because wether you like it or not, most of the world's money is owned by the west, and that the Chinese want to settle down in the west.
I am not saying that rich people want to be snobby wherever they go, I am saying that it will build a better reputation when they are expected to act elegantly and they do act in a well mannered fashion. It is only when you have no sympathy for the poor when you become snobby.

I already replied this somewhere else, but I feel compelled to repeat it since I think we're missing the point here. I believe the point of the "how to eat a banana elegantly" lesson is more about teaching knife and fork handling skills, it's practice for different maneuvers to slice and lift food with a fork and knife. Chinese people mostly use chopsticks for their entire life, so they would need to learn how to properly hold a knife and fork, how to cut food with it, the amount of pressure, sliding the knife to make a good clean cut, pressing food on to the fork then lifting it to their mouth without bits of food falling off. It may seem ridiculous to westerners because you grew up with that, but haven't you ever tried learning how to use chopsticks? The banana is just a nice medium to practice all the different ways you can use the knife and fork at one go.
