jacob's new comic looks like the an interstitial scene of a webcomic centered around two best friends who go on a road trip and fall in love. jacob's character is like. hardcore pining.
for those who wish to view this hypothetical road trip comic, I enthusiastically recommend EK Weaver's The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal, which contains all these elements to a T and is free to read online. Also the art is BEAUTIFUL.

Brian Worden I agree. The orientation and proportions of the new one throw me off. I think the wolf head is a the wrong angle and am not sure where the sword is going. The art otherwise is beautiful though.
@Alex Marrone Wait backgrounds? What are those? I have desperately tried to learn how to draw backgrounds to no success and the only slightly decent background I've made is in my pfp which is a fanart of Wirt from OTGW with the beast in the background. Brush tools are a godsend and so are layers.
As a current middle schooler who doesn’t really like her art I’d just like to say that I find this really inspiring and this only makes me want to work on my art and improve even more. :D
Amelia Wilson stick with it! Don’t be afraid to use references and trace (just don’t take credit for others work, of course) to learn new techniques. I didn’t start to actually like my art until college. And I’m still finding my style! I’ve learned to find the fun in it as an adult. You can do this!! Never stop drawing!
i really recommend you to use tips and tricks from youtube videos, Pinterest, books, and anything you can get your hands on! like this you can build up your art style and improve! the most important thing is to always practice and do what YOU want!
Last night I was working on a drawing and I started doing the lineart only to realize five minutes in I was on the sketch layer because I pressed back to much from a mistake.
Mary Desrosiers Hi! I don’t know what your art style is but I just wanna let you know that soft shading is ok sometimes! Using a mixture of hard and soft edges is your friend, Here’s what I mean : www.deviantart.com/vetyr/art/More-edge-tips-668385814 And this one... www.deviantart.com/vetyr/art/Edges-624600004 also be careful when using any random tutorial of google, some of them are really bad...
@@parhelichor whether or not the shadow's edge is blurry depends on what kind of shadow it is. Is it a: A) cast shadow, think the shadow on the ground behind a tree. These are sharp. B) form shadow, a much less intense shadow wrapping around the form, say from the middle of the tree to the edge of the tree. That one's going to be blurry. A lot of cell shaded art only has cast shadow like shading. Only having form shadows never really works though, it's generally too muddy. I personally use both, but it really depends on your style.
Mary Desrosiers if you want an artist that explains shadows and forms well just watch sinixdesign. He explains how hard edges, lost(soft) edges, detail in shadow, colour in shadow work. Basically if there is something you don’t know about how forms, folds, shadows, reflections, light and detail work (in correspendence to eachother as well) then he has a video. And though his colouring technique is painting for most of the time, his techniques will probably apply to whatever style you have since they are both simplifications and in-depth studies of the basics. What i’m trying to say is that he is just a good teacher when it comes to art (and sometimes being a good person :D). He even teaches at pretty good schools and conventions. Pls do yourself and him a favor and check him out, you might like it!
The feeling when they keep talking about middle school digital art and I'm over here doing digital art for the first time as an adult and loving the airbrush. I think it looks nice I dunno, but maybe this is my middle school phase because I'm new to digital art.
This totally is your middle school phase, and that's ok! No one gets to skip it, no matter how long after middle school you start. I use and airbrush in real life and still have an intense digital airbrush phase - it's just so fun and different! It's been 7 months since you commented so if you read this, let me/everyone know how your art is going!
@@sotnos1125 Also thank you :) Both for reminding me of this comment I made and reassuring me that it's perfectly okay to have this sort of phase. It doesn't really matter what brushes you use or what phase you are in as long as you have fun creating. :) I'm still very deep into that 'eye phase' and I don't think I'll ever stop XD
I've been doing digital art for several years now, and I still use the airbrush for my shading. It may just be because I use a simple program. *shrugs* I also just recently (like within the last year recently) learned about locking the opacity of a layer . . . It has changed my shading process!
@@wyvern713 What program do you use? I am still slowly learning all the things you can do with digital art or art apps lolo. There's just so much to learn!
I don’t think any of us truly leave the air brush phase I’ve been doing digital art for 3 years and I def don’t use it often but when I want to add things like bounce lighting or make it softer, I use the air brush with a clipping layer. So I guess I use it for more lighting than shading now lol
I love when our dad Jacob says 'it's just a phase, but it's an important and good phase so keep at it living that one and you'll get to one in which you will be doing better art' (paraphrased).

i would love an episode where they spend entirely way too long drawing their absolute BEST possible skills, like 8+ hours of drawing, i just wanna see their best.
It’s so great to see their full process and listen to them explain it, as opposed to only watching them modify the subject of a drawing based on silly banter
"What's with middle schoolers and the airbrush tool? They always use it and it always looks terrible." Me: *quietly switches to the pen* Edit: for me I think the reasoning has been thst I needed a soft brush and for a long time it was kind of my only option, since I used a pretty simple program until recently.
Yeah I also started out with it lol, if you want a painting style that isn’t cell shading then look art rendering tutorials, airbrushes aren’t really in real life
To be fair, I'm pretty sure that about 80% of it usually looking bad comes from, ya know, it being an easy thing beginners grab when they want some shading and thus generally being used by people that already don't really have a lot of experience. But then you kinda have to become good to make suboptimal tools work and the best way to do that is use tools that are more suited to a job since trying to do good things while your tools are actively fighting you is really frustrating and makes even just getting better itself so much harder. (Definitely the case with watercolours, if you want to start, use decent paper and decent paints. Maybe ask a friend if you can borrow some but the watercolours we give kids really aren't suited for actually painting with them.)
No need to explain why you used the airbrush tool, we’ve all used it at some point. It’s been around 4 years since I’ve started digital art and I still use the airbrush tool for some lighting effects. It’s a good tool when used correctly and makes very nice and easy gradients.
Fun baby fact: Good head control is one of the developmental milestones for infants. Others include: smiling, rolling over, sitting up alone etc. These emerge at different months/ages. Parents look out for these to make sure their sweet babes are developing well
Good to know. Now I am able to tell others that I had a developmental milestone The day after I was born. (AKA I've always had FREAKISHLY good head control. Being bale to pick up my head after only 24 hours.)
I genuinely refused to move or roll about as a baby, and my head was still squishy so I ended up with a flat area at the back of my head 😂 I like to imagine it being super creepy, a baby laying dead still and quiet just staring at the ceiling, then at you as you lean over to check they're ok 🤣 I was super weird
DUDE SAME i got so excited when i saw karina's improvement. I thought "Woah i can get that good someday" Now i am really excited to look at my current art in 13 years lol
I remember watching art videos like this when I was 13 and hearing people say ur gonna improve and I couldn’t believe them at the time because it felt like everything I made was crap But honestly it’s worth it in the long run and it’s a real confidence boost seeing art that you made years back
I laughed so hard when they talked about the airbrushing because I did the exact same thing in middle school. I drew with my mouse, made a blurry moon night sky background, and airbrushed all the shadows. Lmaoo
Julia: "Is that a gaussian blur moon?!" Me, currently using Gaussian blur on a thumbnail for Moons of Madness: "HA! Yes! Maybe! Is that bad?! I STRUGGLE AT ARTING!"
My theory for why younger artists go to the airbrush tool first: Harder brushes require more commitment. If you mess up anatomy or perspective, it is much more obvious when there is more contrast. Using less contrast or softer brushes help to hide those mistakes.

Julia during Nathan's drawing: I like how you made the horns more like they’re not just glued on and more like they’re part of him- **a short while later** Nathan- *draws line to make it like original*
Erevyone: Shows an old bad drawing and shows how much they evolved. Julia: Shows a PERFECTLY FINICHED piece in a cool style and makes it EVEN COOLER. I love all of them but the contrast was so funny por me.
As someone who would obsessively draw and continue to make random OCs in middle school, I really want to thank Nathan, Jacob, Karina, and Julia for reassuring me that everyone has a wth art phase and that we all ultimately come out stronger. To quote Julia "It'll happen to you. It happens to everyone, and it's correct." Now I just need to learn how to use digital drawing apps.

Karina is a treasure. Little gifts to her past self. A gem of a person.
jacob's new comic looks like the an interstitial scene of a webcomic centered around two best friends who go on a road trip and fall in love. jacob's character is like. hardcore pining.
This is absolutely what i was thinking

THE PINING,
THE PINING _ALWAYS_ GETS TO ME 😭
I don't know Jacob's orientation, but moments like this show how much bisexual energy he has.
for those who wish to view this hypothetical road trip comic, I enthusiastically recommend EK Weaver's The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal, which contains all these elements to a T and is free to read online. Also the art is BEAUTIFUL.
As SOON as I saw Karina's art, I was like "Damn 2006 was cringe for EVERYONE" low and behold, it actually WAS from freakin' 2006 lol
In 2013 I knew that my drawings of humans were disproportionate, but instead of asking for help I made the shoulders bigger and nothing else and thought that I fixed it.

If Julia made a tarot deck I'd buy the fuck out of it.
Brian Worden I agree. The orientation and proportions of the new one throw me off. I think the wolf head is a the wrong angle and am not sure where the sword is going. The art otherwise is beautiful though.

“The air brush shadows”
Me:
Me: hey Siri search the web for how to properly shade digital art...
Mary Desrosiers Hi! I don’t know what your art style is but I just wanna let you know that soft shading is ok sometimes! Using a mixture of hard and soft edges is your friend, Here’s what I mean :
www.deviantart.com/vetyr/art/More-edge-tips-668385814
And this one... www.deviantart.com/vetyr/art/Edges-624600004
also be careful when using any random tutorial of google, some of them are really bad...
@@parhelichor whether or not the shadow's edge is blurry depends on what kind of shadow it is. Is it a:
A) cast shadow, think the shadow on the ground behind a tree.

I've been doing digital art for several years now, and I still use the airbrush for my shading. It may just be because I use a simple program. *shrugs* I also just recently (like within the last year recently) learned about locking the opacity of a layer . . . It has changed my shading process!

"What's with middle schoolers and the airbrush tool? They always use it and it always looks terrible."
Me: *quietly switches to the pen*
Edit: for me I think the reasoning has been thst I needed a soft brush and for a long time it was kind of my only option, since I used a pretty simple program until recently.
@@teaartist6455 agreed
No need to explain why you used the airbrush tool, we’ve all used it at some point. It’s been around 4 years since I’ve started digital art and I still use the airbrush tool for some lighting effects. It’s a good tool when used correctly and makes very nice and easy gradients.
