Elephants play an important role in preserving the forest and nature, which plays a role in bringing about rain. That’s why Tamil ancestors made us worship the elephants to protect them from poaching. “Mum (3) maari (rain) in Tamil has been mentioned in ancient Tamil literature so many times. The Tamil kings always made sure that their lands received “maadham (monthly) mummaari” 3 times rain) to keep the land fertile. This song speaks about “ ambaari “ in Tamil , a seat fastened to the back of elephants where we can sit and ride, rhyming with mummaari thus connecting the elephants with rain. The messages in this song is for people all over the world

enjaami = en + saami. "en" -> mine and "saami" -> God. The literal meaning of enjaami - "My God". Another take on the word "enjaami" is that it was also used by landless people/slaves to call their landlords with the meaning -> "My Lord". The contextual meaning here in this song is ["my dear" / "my precious" / "my everything"] -> Grandparents affectionately call their grandchildren "enjaami" which reflects how much they love them(equal to a god). Elders also use this term when trying to console/comfort children as an expression of how much they love them. The song wants us to enjoy what we have been given harmoniously with nature. Ancestors/Elders have given us this beautiful world for us to enjoy and celebrate life and live together as a society that is in harmony with nature.
That different voice that Arivu is singing with in-between is supposed to mimic grandmother's(elders) voice. The lines that were sung using this different voice are colloquial sayings by rural elders that were passed down from older generations. Another aspect is the way he is singing these lines is using "Oppari" - a traditional form of music that is still sung in funerals for lamenting.
The music instruments used were traditional Tamil music instruments(all the drums) and the drum elements are of Tamil traditional music not of African tribal music as everybody is assuming.
Also, the video backdrop with tribal people is supposed to highlight how old the Tamil civilization is. Tamil is one of the oldest classical languages in the world and possibly one of the oldest civilization with thousands of years of history. Everyone makes tribe elements connections to Africa which is mistaken.
    Enjoy Enjaami!

Tamil is the world's oldest language as well as beautiful language
The drums you hear early are called “Parai” in Tamil
The power of mother language of all the languages penetrated through her nerves. It's a Tamil song about nature and ancestors
This form of singing is called "opaari" which means the song sung when a person is dead.
OPPARI a.k.a lamenting for dead a culture followed by Tamils where women gather around the dead and sing together about the dead person. It's a way to grief with the community. In this music they're lamenting for the land lost.

Wowwww the sound and the dance give me a sense of interpretative freedom. Despite the positive vibes that might make you think of a funny song, it's a very deep and powerful song. The song is the story of Valliammal, Arivu's grandmother, who used to call him 'Enjaami' (My Lord). It was the story told to him by his grandmother about the Tamil migration to Ceylon during the Colonial era. During the period of Colonial India, with a poverty-stricken population, it was a market for cheap labour. Hordes of Tamil people were sent to Ceylon in the 19th century to work on the tea, coffee and rubber plantations, with his grandmother being one of them. This is the beauty of the universal language of music and culture

I do love genuine reactions, from both parties, but I love to know something about the artist, the repertoire, the culture, traditions etc. it helps me dive into the mood of what I'm listening to.Many times it leads you to understand a different meaning than what you thought it was. But then I listen to the song by myself. That's where the fun happens. Music is a universal language, you don't need to know lyrics. Just close yr eyes. Every genre has something to tell you. I mean - it's so heart touching that you tried to understand and explain what this video/music/lyrics are trying to convey to the world.
This song does convey a very specific historic event's story.. which obviously non-Tamilians won't understand by just listening to it. Even I didn't know until I searched about it.
But kudos to you, you captured the essence perfectly... and most importantly focused on the lyrics.
Lyrics in Indian songs, especially in linguistically rich regions like South India, Maratha, Bengal and NE India have a very very realistic and deep meanings. Old Hindi songs too had this charm where music is much plain and simple but the lyrics is more important.

    Very nice review.
This song is purely a Tamil song and this song represents culture of Tamil people. We call it now 'country songs'. These kind of 'country songs' had been invented all over the country at village level. There is no records for these kind of songs. In ancient time, Tamil people are ruled by different rulers. . But this type of 'country songs' circulates around all over Tamil land. Country songs for all kind of events exists still. Songs for happy moment, sad moment, play moment, fight moment, dance moment, work moment, sleep moment, birth moment, death moment, etc,.etc,..
In this song, children are playing and singing around. Grandma and Grandpa telling them greatness of our land and life.
Tamil literature has so many interesting lessons to tell. Hope one day I'll get time to share those legacies with all.

What you talked about spirituality is on point. There are two types of spirituality. One where you look into yourself or look at something higher (fictitious?). This is the one for those in glass castles. The other is where you look around, understand and live with nature. This is the one which has the smell of dirt, grass and rain. Sadly, the first one is the more trending one and where all the hype is.

Nicely done. One correction, mum Mari means three times rain. Rice cultivation to harvest takes 110 days which varies from variety to variety, there are 365 days in a year, theoretically three harvests of rice could be done in the land provided the rain gods oblige with rain at the right season. Usually only one harvest or two harvest only happens. Previously farming depended solely on rain

Bro, Song is so beautiful you can interpret in a lot of different ways. The guy who wrote the song was trying to represent the hardworking farmers who work their asses off but hardly get any money out of it or recognition. He was also trying to talk about his grandma who was taken to tea plantation work as a slave and when she came back to India, she was a strong woman and the lyric writers inspiration. There is a lot more to the song bug it's hard to type everything here.

Wow you are fantastic...you have a new fan :)
The main theme is about the forced displacement of Tamils from South India to Sri Lanka to work on the farms and plantations there. Forced by the Brits
After decades of nourishing the land, the person / people have nothing to call their own
Enjaami can be interpreted in a few different ways...my dear grandson, or sir landlord
The ulululation you hear in parts of the song is a form of eulogy and lamentation for someone or something that has died
And then this is hope everlasting
You should visit India. And of course it's a dream of mine to visit South Africa
    Maybe someday :)

You interpreted the lyrics of this song very brilliantly and genuinely. Nature, animals, earth, ancestors, farmers, their toil, hardships etc. I was wondering what would you interpret about colors of dress they are wearing especially the orange colour she is wearing. Ya orange represents fire as you said.
    Love❤️ and Wishes💐 from Kerala🌴

Bitter gourd is a vegetable we all eat with relish in South India.
