The Subtle Mastery of Cal Tjader - "Viva Cepeda"

  • In the 1950s, Cal Tjader made quite a name for himself with his combination of vibraphone jazz/bebop and Afro-Cuban rhythms. His band contained top notch players like Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo, as well as a pianist named Vince Gauraldi - who would later become very well known for writing the music for "Peanuts".
Cal Tjader was a great vibraphonist who clearly followed in the footsteps of Milt Jackson. His mellow touch and bebop lines were perfectly suited for the combination with a typical Afro-Cuban percussion section.
In 1959, he released the album "Latin Concert" on Fantasy Records. The opening track is a tune called "Viva Cepeda". Cal Tjader was a west-coaster, and in 1958 the San Francisco Giants baseball team had a sensational young rookie from Puerto Rico named Orlando Cepeda....hence the name of the tune.
Here's the original: • Viva Cepeda (Remastered)
I'm always happy to be able to draw connections between my two favorite things: music and baseball!
This tune is actually the first Cal Tjader track I ever heard - I bought the CD when I was in college at the suggestion of a teacher. I instantly fell in love with the album, and actually started playing congas at that time as well. I used to practice congas and drums along with this record, trying to imitate the feel of the 2:3 clave rhythms.
Cal uses some really interesting harmonic devices in this solo, and also demonstrates his excellent knowledge and sense for Cuban rhythm, particularly the clave. I've analyzed the song and parts of his solo for you in this video.
I hope you enjoy these videos and find them helpful! I also hope you are inspired to check out more of Cal Tjader's music! Thanks for watching.

It was September 1957, as a GI, Iwas being shipped to Korea, but on a Saturday night in San Francisco, I went to the Blackhawk, where Cal and another group were playing, oh yeah, Brubeck. What a night, Vince Guaraldi was asking if I could get him a Nikon on my way there. Both groups got together for the finale. A very special night, I used to have many of their records...

Great job breaking down Viva Cepeda, brought memories of going to music school here in San Francisco. I approached Cal Tjader back in 1981-82 and after seeing him at The Great American Music Hall venue I asked him if I could take vibes lessons from him. He told me he was back on the road touring, his album (one of my favorites) "La Onda Va Bien" had won the Grammy and he wasn't taking on students. He recommended me to John Rae and excellent all around Percussionist, vibist on his own right. John was a great teacher and really steered me in the right direction. Being a working musicians in the SF Bay Area has given me the opportunity to work with the guys featured in La Onda Va Bien: Mark Levine, Roger Glenn, Rob Fisher, Vince Lateano - haven't played with Poncho Sanchez. I'll check some of your other videos sometime later.

Love this CD. My dad gave me his copy. Cubano Chant is my favorite track. Fun fact: it was also sampled on De La Souls song "Watch Out"... I'm a hip hop head but I love jazz and Latin jazz cause of my dad. Glad I found your channel 🤘🏼

Cepeda was adored in San Francisco as the first Giants star not inherited from New York. Perhaps one of the most enduring manifestations of the love San Francisco had for the Baby Bull is song recorded by the legendary Cal Tjader Quintet (Tjader on vibes, Cuba's Mongo Santamaria on congas, Al McKibbon on bass, Vince Guaraldi #CharlieBrownXmas on piano, and Cepeda's compatriot Willie Bobo on timbales) while they were fixtures at SF's Black Hawk jazz night club: "Viva Cepeda"

Pure "Clave de Son" pure AFRO-CUBAN MAMBO. In those days all those cuban rhythms had names: Son montuno, Mambo, Chachacha, Guaracha, Guajira, Guaguanco (Rumba), Danzon and many others. Nobody call them Salsa

Do you know where to get sheet music for his music? Having a hard time finding it for vibraphone.
