This video is absolutely the best any person can find on the internet. No BS at all, straight to the point. Dude, you are amazing for doing this. Thank you so much!
Right on glad it could help a bit, I have been there myself. Congrats on the job and best of luck with it :) Feel free to ask questions if you need help.
yo i know this video is hella old, but it still holds up in 2021. i'm a recent game art grad that was taught on 3ds max but like. 90% of studios want maya experience. so i appreciate this greatly bro
Yeah no worries. A lot of 3D concepts don't age -- Maya's logic is basically the same today as it was in the 1990s when it was invented. It's math and geometry. I've been using Maya now pretty much every waking day since 2017 and I really enjoy it -- I don't plan on ever going back to MAX. Good luck friend~
LOL the mad dog mcree reference. Thanks for making this man. I guess my days of modeling things super fast/efficiently/accurate in 3ds max are over. My new job uses Maya. I'm waiting for my wife to leave the room so i can cry.
Hahaha! Well hey, your Max skills are still useful don't sweat it. I don't think you'll find it so different after about 3 months. The main thing is getting used to not having the modifier stack, which is nice because you can go back in time in Max - Maya is less forgiving, it's more straight ahead forward modeling and if you want to experiment, just duplicate the model and work on a different one (incase you want to fall back). Let me know how it goes
The amount I swear while trying to do things that come naturally to me in Max is probably going to get me in hell. I just find it so frustrating to switch. It just feels like I have to make 10x more steps to get to the same result as in Max. I have been putting it off for years, but I must learn it as I am teaching at a university, and we have a policy to not enforce a certain software, so some students like working in Maya and it gets complicated sometimes. This was a great video to get me started.
Haha I appreciate the nice words, glad it helped. I would say fight through the struggle. Maya was tricky to grasp for me at first too. But many many jobs require Maya and although companies will often still hire people regardless of knowing it, exposing your students to Maya now will greatly spare them some headache and stress down the road when they inevitably will have to learn it. All the best to you.
Hey there! Amazing video, it's been super helpful! One question for you: at 2:04 you create an object by clicking and dragging (like in 3DS), however, my install has the object being created at the center of the viewport with default size options. I did not see any documentation surrounding this, could you let me know how you switched this behavior? (If you mentioned this in a later video, I'm sorry, I am only about 1/2 way though your 2nd tutorial in this series.
Hey thank you for the nice words and glad it helps. You can find this option under Create > Polygon Primitives > Interactive Creation. Attached is an image for reference. This tutorial series was made some time ago, I am much better at Maya now haha. If you have more questions during your progress don't hesitate to drop me a line! i.imgur.com/gbrZmJC.jpg
I would suggest using F9 f10 and f11 to replace 1 2 and 3, those are the maya defaults. F1 is very handy by default both in 3Ds max Maya for the help and documentation.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge :) I used bits of Maya many years ago in university but could'nt warm up to it and stayed with 3ds Max. I'm changing to a job which requires Maya now, too. With those keybinds, the start is already much easier, thanks!
Been using Max since version 1 and wanted to start diving in to Maya after all these years. This was a great help! What tool do you use to edit the axis. This is something I use plugins for inside of max.
Heya, sorry I'm late. To edit the pivot of any object you can hit 'd' and a little yellow dot will appear that you can manipulate. Hit 'd' again to return to normal edit mode. Unless you mean rotate, then hit the 'e' key. Or, if you want to move in object axis versus world axis, you can go to Tool Settings with the "move tool" and change Axis Orientation to World, Object, or Component modes.
Hey man, this is exactly what I was looking for. Had to switch to Maya due to new job after good few years of using Max. I thought it is gonna be pain but after 5 weeks now I already feel like it is second nature. I am already showing people at work some neat tricks I took from Max. Maya feels smoother and more user friendly, there is a lot to say in this topic though. I gotta put all my shortcuts and scripts in one place and would like to share it as a way to say thank you! Cheers man
Carlos Osa hey thank you dude! I know what you mean. Maya just feels so much smoother than max, and my favourite part is accessing verts edges or faces is so much faster than digging through modifier stacks. I also use smooth mesh preview constantly. I made the full switch to maya just a month ago and bought all my renderers (Vray / redshift) and simulation plugins for it. I don’t think I’ll be using max again unless I have to, Ive just decided to stick to maya and try to master it. Good luck bud!
@@MANIAKRA Also (at least with V-Ray) not having frozen software while rendering is awesome. It was bugging me down in Max every time. Hotkeys Editor is so much nicer to use, it encourages the user to play around with custom configs. Also when doing stuff like bevel, extrude etc. I don't have to type any values in order to change stuff, Maya nailed it with just a mouse movement lol. Of course both software has its pros and cons but I am really suprised of how nice Maya treats me so far (except more crashes xD). "Ive just decided to stick to maya and try to master it" - great attitude! Good luck to you too man!
You have two separated objects but want to access vertices of other objects too - no problem in Maya! Those little things when add up making a big difference! The list goes on and on sorry haha!
@@carlososa5155 See for that I would just throw another editable poly modifier onto my selection or another unwrap UVW. I know what you mean though. Glad it wasnt super stressful for you to switch.
badass video.. question.. is there a max navigation inside maya.? I think max navigation is the most comfotable for me.. I have the max navigation in mostly other software...
@@MANIAKRA I mean. navigation. like moving your viewport with your mouse.. instead of using control+right clikck in maya we can use control+ middle mouse button. I mean that navigation...hehehehe
Hey man thanks for this, really useful. I recently updated to the latest 3ds max and I cannot express the state of it, I was on 2016 for the longest time and had no idea how buggy and broken the change was going to be. I'm then trying to get into Maya cos if I have to spend hours figuring out how to work around a bug or poor design choice I might as well learn another program/workflow and make good use of that time. I thought I'd get into CInema4D or Blender, but ultimately it always comes down to 3ds max or Maya when looking for quality work, the rest is either limited or specialized. Also, I guess it's useful to have hands-on skills with both since they keep "ping-ponging" as the most used in the industry to and from gaming, architecture, movies, etc.
Eminor Maya hands down is the smartest move for real studio work. I’m working on a production team now and until you are working with a big team of people dealing with thousands of assets and files you can’t really appreciate Maya’s full power. It’s the most well rounded choice and you can’t go wrong. Appreciate the comment!
@@MANIAKRA Thanks a lot for this videos, exactly what I was looking for. can you elaborate about how Maya helps with dealing huge amount of assets comparing to other softwares?
It would be nice to see a video on using orthographic cameras and troubleshooting them. That is one of the things I always have trouble with being a Max guy myself. Great video by the way!
I just went back to double check. The easiest way to put it is that I am not sure whether to use View --> Predefined Bookmarks to bounce between views or create cameras using Panels --> Orthographic --> "insert view here". In 3d Studio Max I have shortcut keys for my views such as "T" = Top, "R" = Right, "B" = Bottom, etc. I was wondering if there was a better way to bounce around views. One thing I did notice is that when I use Predefined Bookmarks if I go from Perspective to "Front" it will say persp -z. Thanks for your help.
Np, I personally mostly use perspective view 90% of the time in both Maya and Max. I use the orthographic views (Front/Back/L/R) for checking placement, like making sure feet touch the ground. My personal preference for swapping between views is to Keybind it, or just ALT-W in and out of viewports to enlarge them. Do not create cameras - use the Predfined Bookmarks, but keybind them :)
how you can set that hold and drag to make object? its would be usefull and can we chance the scroll like in 3ds max its alt + middle mouse and in maya its alt + left click i want to chance it really like 3ds max
thank you, as a 12 years of max user this helped lot
