Recitation is one of the central practices of Pure Land Buddhism. It involves the concentrated and heartfelt repetitive recitation of "Namo Amitabha Buddha" (Homage to the Buddha of Boundless Compassion and Wisdom). In Chinese this phrase is "Namo Omito-Fo" or "Namo Amituofo", in Japanese, "Namu Amida Butsu."

Amitabha Buddha
Amitabha, Sanskrit word, literally means boundless light and boundless life. He is the Buddha in the Land of Ultimate Bliss (Pure Land), in which all beings enjoy unbounded happiness. Amitabha has forty-eight great vows to establish and adorn his Pure Land. People also recite or call upon his name by the time of dying will be born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss with the reception by Amitabha. Amitabha is one of the most popular and well-known Buddha in China.
Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss
This is the Buddha Land of Amitabha Buddha. In Amitabha Sutra, there is full description about this Pure Land. This is the world of utmost joy without suffering. With the spiritual power of Amitabha Buddha, all beings in this world will understand Buddhism easily and practise diligently, and attain enlightenment eventually. Therefore by reciting Amitabha Buddha's name, Buddhist followers hope that they will be born in this Pure Land after their lives on earth.

The first time I listened to it, I bursted into tears non stop. It was because I had a lot of "questions" to ask about my life, and because I was just thinking about the Buddha's compassion and kindness. You're not alone =]
Remind me of my Dad.. We were all praying and mentioned Amituofo during his critical condition at the hospital and his last breath. He passed away a year ago. I still miss him a lot.. thanks for sharing..
i consider Buddhism as more as a science than religion....its here where you can find true peace of mind...they dont go to war for the sake of their faith..unlike in other religions

how peaceful I as a christian never heard such peaceful chant in our religion.
I've came across a number of mantra but I must say, this is the most powerful I've heard so far. I can feel my muscles were vibrating and even give me headache. The sort of feeling when something was cleansed from my body.
I never thought the very common Namo Amituofo could have such incrediable power.

Hi Sengoku, this is Pure Land Buddhism, a branch of Mahayana Buddhism that centers on worship of the Buddha Amithaba for guidance so one can one be reborn in the Pure Land, a perfect heavenly abode in which enlightenment is said to be guaranteed.
Though also widely practiced in China and Japan, Zen emphasises direct, experiential realization through meditation and dharma practice.
The end goal of is the same, Enlightenment.

I had shown this to Zufu Zwan Zhong. His home temple is very strong and pure. I tell him about my previous life, and how I died in a sport accident, he says this is very common. I tell of the blue haze where I went, and how I did not wish to return. He says this was one of the aspects of nirvana. The buddhist is one path to the pure land. I get tears of joy and sadness at the same time when I meditate sometimes (with moving music that is), but I don't feel bad when I cry, I feel nice and very very 'in the moment' and deep.
I guess this is a good thing right?
