As a person who has worked in formal wear for 20 years you absolutely can wear a sling to formal events but keep it extra small extra flat and wear it on your back under your suit so it keeps a flat profile if you need to pull it to the front make sure its something of high quality that matches your decor. Do not allow formalities to get in the way of convenience and comfort. If you wear a leather piece like a grams piece its classy and can be used as a conversation starter
