Big thanks to Darren for having me! Make sure to go give him a follow: www.youtube.com/@DarrenMostyn The two Darren recommends when talking about Luts are: Jason Bowdach - pixeltoolspost.com/ Cullen Kelly - www.youtube.com/@CullenKelly
I’ve learned so much from Darren. I like what he said about adding nodes.: “If I stop and think, ‘what should I do next?’ then I add another node”. Great advice.
I can honestly say that both yourself and Darren have been the most influential and helpful with my Davinci Resolve roller-coaster self-discovery journey. You are a Jedi on the Edit Page and Darren is "The GOAT" when it comes to the Colour Page. Thank you gentlemen😀
Dude. You're one of the people I owe for getting my current job. Have been following you since 2021 and you basically helped me to achieve my current skill at Resolve ( and I still have a LOOOOT of space for improvement). Sincerely, THANK YOU!
Thanks Alex. Great interview 👍 Darren is a fantastic colourist who I have learnt lots from. Brighton brought back memories from when we lived in the UK not far from Brighton (2005-2015) . Also did Brighton University on the Open University Bsc summer time back in the 90ies. I still miss a good English breakfast & the Fish and Chips. 😊
For some reason I hadn't watched this video. I have started watching Darren's videos a short while ago, and like you Alex he is great at delivering info in an easy to understand way. Last weekend I met up with a group of people who I only knew on line and we all got on well and it felt like greeting old acquaintances.
I'm quite new to video editing, focusing mainly on creating videos from my motorcycle trips. I've realized that only someone as skilled as Darren could truly enhance the colors in them.
Two of my top resources together, thank you. However ... Darren says I do not need him for my YT channel???? WRONG! I have a 'psychedelic' color genre, and Darren's channel has provided GREAT guidance to ease my effort (even the little things are big for me). And, of course, MrAlexTech's '5 Minute Fridays' playlist is a massive quick reference resource. I repeat watch videos on both of these channels soo much that I have probably provided half of their total views (haha). Thank you both. (In fact these are two channels I have 'rewarded' by subscribing multiple times via my other channels! Gotta keep 'em motivated.)
Great video! It was full of great info that is very pertinent to what we all want to know. Also, both of your personalities are great and it's nice to hang out with such congenial guys. Thanks for this!!! Who are the people that Darren mentioned who create really nice LUTs? I got Jason Bawdach but missed the other's name. Thanks!!
Great episode Alex, your the local lad doing good. Directing my first feature. I am cameraman, editor, vfx, colourist and doing all the audio mixing. All in resolve and maybe Fusion studio. I will be using Nuendo 12 in the pipeline. But watching yourself, Darren, Casey, and others not so well known, has given me the confidence to take on this massive undertaking on. So I would like to take this opertunity to thank you and the other guys. And when I get stuck I will be referring back to you guys for help 😁
Hiii sir im from INDIA and my question is im using Davinci Resolve free version .. I want to know about davinci Resolve's free version export quality If I using free version then what im loosing my quality in export??? 🙂
Sir when I export any short video with Davinci Resolve, an error comes "Unable to preview video" then I have to reexport it in premiere or VN. why does it happen? please help
I literally thought, to see you nice 🤦🏻♀️ Have to watch this later, but how cool that you two got together! Looking forward to understanding one word in three 😂
This was great - I've got a better sense about simplifying the process, and trying to build my 'film emulation' skills myself. Next year, maybe I will take Darren's course❤
I missed the "live" release... I was anxious to see you both in the same video, you guys are the reason I got the Speed Editor + Studio licence. Do I really need it? Nope. Do I regret buying it? Nope, it makes editing multiple viewpoints Forza Horizon 5 races so much easier. If you want to dip your toes in the Stream Deck pool, the Mobile app 2.0 (recently released on iOS and soon on Android) allows 6 buttons for free. Then you can unlock the full app for 60€. On the iPad in split view you can fit 2x 64 buttons.
Great episode. Love each of your channels. Quick question regarding CST: Does it make any difference in quality or grading options to use it (or a wide color space, for that matter) if all the camera footage is Rec709?
That was great. Good interview with great questions. The Fish n Chips sign - Being a Canadian, can't believe that the sign included "mushy peas". That sounds disgusting to admit having at all. Nevermind putting it on the sign. lol. The fixed node question to Darren. If people don't use fixed nodes, another reason that pros use them, is to have nodes that usually require setting up each time to your preference, available just by turning on the node. So if you use any OFX effects, like Glowe or halation, or whatever - setting up the parameters everytime from scratch is kind of a waste of time. So a fixed node tree is like having your own presets ready to go, on any clip, at anytime you require it- you just need to turn them on. Resolve engineers a few versions ago, re-engineered so that nodes turned off, are using pretty much none of your resources. So building a fixed node tree now, has a huge benefit. It can get complicated though and look more menacing than it actually is, but in all software use - if it seems like you spend a lot of time doing the same thing over and over ( like setting up effects, or even color warper etc. ) there probably is a better and faster approach. Fixed node trees is a great example of this.
Cheers Jim. Mushy peas is more a northern England thing (my manor) so not sure why !! Agreed fixed node tree is to keep deactivated nodes that need a lot of set up! eg. NR, Glow.
@@DarrenMostyn that’ll be very helpful. I only use my tablet in photoshop. Will be nice to incorporate it into my video editing as well. Thanks for considering.
That was CHOCK full of goodness! Have to pass on the boring fish and chips though. Maybe some curry next time to spice it up a little and then color grade the curry to look like curry....8-) Actually, I really enjoyed this and thank you, Darren, for sharing your knowledge and experience! I already subscribed to your channel too.
Telephone IT Support now finished for a 70+ year old friend who knows nothing about computers. I shall now watch this and unwind from pulling all my hair out.
Where does the LUT get applied if using the CST node? I've seen creators swear it goes under or before the CST node, then creators apply it last after the CST.

Jason Bowdach - pixeltoolspost.com/
What gear and settings did you use to shoot this interview? Colors and production value look amazing.
The main shot was with Lumix S5iiX - 4k DCI 422 10bit. The wide show was on the original Lumix S5. All the B-roll was on the S5iiX as well.
Good interview Alex could be a new series 🎥
I'd like it to be! I made sure to hide 'Episode 1' title in there so I could make an Episode 2 some time 😄
it would be very helpful to know how to setup macro for streamdeck - davinci - regards from italy
Very interesting to get an intro to something I know nothing about lol. How long did it take you to get down to Brighton?
It's about 3 hours away. Although it took me closer to 6 hours to get home 😄
