Brother I came here from the wristwatch community and the hype I’ve seen from that side of the fence is unbelievable. The folks here in the knife world are so much nicer and easier to communicate with haha! And my 5th Finch is heading to me as we speak 💯
True, watch community it horrible. Say you don't like current bandwagon fashion or recently shilled microbrand and you are the worst enemy. Knife people are much nicer and don't hate you for having personal taste.
@ I once made the mistake of saying that the Tudor Black Bay 58 didn’t really do it for me…..found out real quick how easily some people get offended 🤦♂️
I am in the watch world too, it gets crazy but has come back down a bit from 2022 levels at least (pre-owned Rolex dipping below retail again for most models).
@@tankt13 I am right there with you. It's a generic diver with a fairly good movement...Nothing special really. Give me a Longines Zulu time over that any day. (or a Zodiac Super Sea Wolf or Norqain)
There is nothing that makes me instantly hate something that I loved, more than it being pushed on me. You can take me by the reigns and lead me about anywhere, but don’t get behind me and push….I start kicking quick.
While you may have been caught up in the hype yourself, I have never seen you pass on unnecessary hype to your audience. That is one reason (of many) why I prefer your channel over the others. Thanks for being there for us.
Great video JB! I used to buy knives because of the hype and, most of the time, they never quite met my expectations. I’d usually lose my excitement for them very quickly and get rid of them. I try to avoid hype as much as possible now, which is one reason I got into Medford knives. Most of the things said about Medford is negative haha but personally I love them. When I buy a Medford I’m buying it because I want it and not because someone said I should get it.
I agree… everyone has their own likes and you don’t go overboard in either direction! One of your knives I purchased from you; you strongly disliked and I loved it. Then gave it to a best friend for a milestone birthday and he carries it all the time and luvs it too… but that’s life!!
Good topic. I also was thinking about avoiding negative hype, or drama, in the community. There is plenty of that as well, and it is just as hard to avoid.
Good video topic. Rusty has suggested some good topics. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I try not to get caught up in the hype (most of the time). I usually have to stew over a purchase for a while.
Gave it a bit of thought. I also highly recommend a knife or EDC budget and doing three questions why, why and why. The the third why I tend to know and have stopped myself from buying when I shouldn't.
My problem is I am easy to please and get excited about pretty much every knife I get my hands on! 🤣 It's not so much that I am excited because of the quality or price or anything like that it's just that knives in general get me excited lol Great video bro!
Avoiding the hype is very easy when we have the knives we need.....no....when we have atleast 60 great knives in the collection to be fair 😊. I just stopped watching every youtube channel that have their own knifes, in that moment they are on the other side of the knife community...the factory side. And we can expect only commercials and adds from them. Thanks for the video JB!
I could tell you actually really loved the UKPK, you just didn't want to oversell it 😂😂😂 But for real this is an important topic and this was a fun insight into your perspective. I know you have a lot of topics in this series, but I think it would be fun to do a follow up where you talk about how you developed your own personal preferences over time (or more generally how a new collector could approach that)
@@BigRedEDC That's why I'm here. You haven't steered me wrong. I like your no BS, right to the point reviews. Even the reviews of knives I can't afford. Some of those other reviewers need to turn it down a notch, IMO. ALSO, and this is important, you give the viewer a great look at the product instead of spending the entire time fidgeting open and closed the reviewed knife and your box opening knife. As if to show off some "knife handling" skills.👍
Wait, you mean I’m allowed to not buy into hype!? I think the thing I’m most susceptible to are good stories these days. Whether it’s a custom knife that is being taken down to production, or a special feature, or a designer I’ve identified with, that’s my weakness. It’s hard not to watch videos done by the designer since that’s what I like about knives - hearing the how and the why behind something. Good consideration JB!
I remember the Elementum and a Case you got at blade show. Maybe the Case was a special event since you were testing. I normally see various videos of the same knife to try to make a balance opinion of it. in my experience, I got disappointed with the Artisan Holm with Rosewood since the scales are too dark that you can´t make out the wood pattern but the videos you see, show a lighter scales. Artisan refuses to SELL me another set of scales. Amazing. Normally I take your opinion because you are as neutral as possible and I respect that.
Yeah, wood grains are hard because they vary so much! It's usually hard to get OEM scales for large production runs. They just don't make extra scales to sell. Have to go aftermarket
Stay True To Yourself. Hype is ok BUT definitely has it limitations. I like what I like and buy what I buy because I like it not because someone else does. Preciate your time JB. 💯✌🏼
I've gotten a lot more selective with what knives I look at. There's just way too many new knives coming out and most of them are fantastic especially the mid-high end Chinese stuff out of reate, kunwu, etc. Now I'm prioritizing USA made models from manufacturers like TRM, ABW and I want to try a McNees next.
Honestly, the reason we like watching the videos is getting other peoples viewpoints on knives. What you like isn't necessarily what I'll like. That's why there's so many different kinds of knives out there - whether it's auto's, slip joints, liner locks, frame locks, button locks, back locks, shark locks, compression locks... God, am I missing any? LOL Then I won't even go down the rabbit hole of the blade shapes after doing the locks!! But if I'm looking at certain knives to possibly buy - I check out a few different reviews. And of course, say MC reviewing his own knife the Excalibur, or TriState reviewing the Tristache, or Neeves reviewing his Misdemanor, no - that's not a review for the most part. It's hyping it up. LMAO But they usually will give you a good look see at the knife and with checking out other reviews on it - you can make a somewhat informed purchase. Even with doing that - we have gotten knives that once in hand we did NOT like. ***shrug*** it happens. We sell it or trade it away in that case. Like recently I picked up the D Rocket Lum leaf Green/black knife - LOVE the knife, absolutely love the size, the way it fits in the hand how friggin' SHARP it is - but absolutely HATE the clip. I took the clip off and just use the knife as a toss in the pocket knife. Maybe in the future I'll look for a small belt sheath for it. We'll see. But everyone likes different knives and in this time being able to see all the different makers/designers/etc... seeing their dreams of what they consider the 'perfect' knife is awesome. But is it perfect for me? Not necessarily. Now saying that, I did pre-order the Excalibur. I didn't care for Neeve's blade shape of his Misdemeanor, and the Tristache I was on the fence about and didn't order it. Now, KC's MicroJet - I ordered WAY TOO MANY of them. My husband and I both love the knife, the shape, the size, the action is great!! Pricing is a bonus. I honestly believe we have almost 2 of each style - just may be short one or two. LOL KC is probably scratching his head trying to figure out what we're doing. I like watching your views on the knives you get because you DO enjoy it - why else would you do it? Okay, I've rambled on for way too long. Have a wonderful day JB and take care of yourself!! Hugs to the family and hoping you have a wonderful holiday!
The button lock only Elementum was a big disappointment for me also. I didn't buy one, but I've been waiting for years for Civivi to come out with a larger Elementum. They did a fixed blade, and that button lock only version. WTF Civivi? 🙄
