At the beginning of the season Van picked up a brand new 2015 YZF-R3 and it has turned out to be a better bike than any of us at STG had ever anticipated. The look, seating position, and quality of the Yamaha has made this motorcycle Van's street bike of choice for the summer of 2015. Watch as Van takes you through the steps he takes to service the 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3. He will show you how to do an oil change, adjust the chain tension, check for break wear, and reset the oil life index, as well as other tips and tricks along the way.
If you feel uncomfortable with this modification please take your bike to a licensed motorcycle mechanic. Stay tuned for more installation videos!

Man, I have to tell you!
Watching your Do It Yourself videos for my R3 has saved me hundreds of dollars.
Thank you!
Keep it up...
+Kaha K Cool, glad to hear it and thanks for watching! - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear thank you for video, just bought my wife 2017 R3....I have a Sazuki Blvd c50..... I know my bike, going to watch all your videos, you explain in detail and terms non- mechanics like myself understand!!!!💪 Thank you
@@sportbiketrackgear bought bike from 1st owner with 3k miles.... Sold because he has 3 baby girls and 0 time to ride.... I gotta go over whole bike make sure it's safe for my wife
I'm 58 years old , been riding since i was 11 .
Owned many Japanese & European motorcycles over the years .
And I'm seriously looking into buying a R3 .
I rode Max's on the track at the end of the season last year and had a blast. For 2019 I will have our Ninja 400 track prepped so I can ride with Max when he is on the R3. These lightweight bikes are so much fun to ride. - Van
I like Brian how he is dead serious and always covers every point. I’m very ocd and he tends to hit every point I run into while servicing a bike. This video was his use of the ruler, chain alignment tool for getting your alignment of your rear wheel correct and pre filling the oil filter. All good stuff.
Thank you for watching! - Brian Van
Congratulations. You are one of the few or only ones that make reference to the gasket on the drain bolt
Thank you so much for this guide!
I just did a oil change on my Mt-03, and everything went flawlessly thanks to your superb easy to follow guide!
Thanks, from Serbia!
You are welcome and thank you for watching! - Brian Van
Brian just want to thank you for all your videos from tutorials to reviews on gear. Your video style/ communication is spot on. Keep doing what you're doing!
Your channel and video are incredible, i have never been a great mechanic but in just one month i put a r77 full exhaust, got a fender eliminator with led turning signals, flush mount front led turn signals, usb charger, will install tomorrow blockoff plate, PCV and autotune... these video are amazing and so well made!
Thanks!!!
You are welcome and thank you for watching! - Brian Van
I'm 99% sure this will be my first bike, in a year or two when people start putting them up on craigslist in the $3,000 range. I love your R3 video series.
+GT6SuzukaTimeTrials for $3k I imagine it'd either have 500,000 miles on itor, have been set on fire recently lol
+David Murray I never was really into street bikes for the longest time, I liked the aesthetics of Cruisers more (no experience actually riding sadly, at least not yet) This however, for about 5k? I seriously can't really find any other bike that is as newbie friendly and within a similar displacement than this.
Made me really re-evaluate my tastes in bikes, especially since I plan on making this a commuter vehicle when the whether is favorable.
I'm actually considering a CB500F now after I take the MSF course when the season starts back up in April. I'm 6'0 and 210 lbs. I'd look a little big on a 300.
+GT6SuzukaTimeTrials Totally recommend this bike!
+Sportbike Track Gear Absolutely! When at the dealership looking at the bikes the R3's R6's and R1's were lined up together and with out looking at the badging you really have a hard time telling which is which, they are all about the same size!
Best video on 600 mile service for the R3! Thank you Brian and all at STG for showing this, you just saved me $160. Now I don't have to take it to my dealership.
+Goalier95 Cool, happy to help. - Van
I watched your Video twice , because I like to see a task performed properly & you did just that.
Much appreciated with thanks.
You are welcome, happy it was helpful. - Van
you guys are great for going out of your way to help out new riders with bike maintenance and tips. much appreciated and you guys are to be supported 100%. keep up the good work.
Thanks for the kind words!
Great video, thank you! Getting my R3 (first motorcycle) once the snow melts in Minnesota.
+tia ria Awesome! We are also anxious to ride here in MI!
You are a god send sir.
Happy to hear this was helpful and thank you for watching! - Van
This video is the singular reason I chose to do my first service myself, instead of shelling out $300+ dollars for my dealership to do it. I bought everything from STG for $100.47 (filter, oil, chain cleaner, chain paste, and chain alignment tool).
Thanks for making these videos, I hope you guys do more for later services. I'm sure the $4,000 mile service is going to hit me where it hurts.
I'd love to see videos on replacing levers, and maybe R6 throttle tube mod! ;)
+msdss Thanks for watching and we are very glad to have inspired you!
Hi! I have a 2015 YZF-R3. Just came across your channel and I am VERY thankful for finding it! You'll be hearing from me again to be sure. Keep the rubber side down!
Thanks for watching! - Van
Awesome video man. In aviation maintenance, the only time we use new drain plug washers is if it is a crush washer or the washer is damaged/warped. Absolutely nothing wrong with reusing a drain plug washer that is still in good shape. Also I have to add that you are an excellent teacher - I'm an instructor by trade, and I wouldn't be surprised if you told me you have years of teaching experience.
Thank you for watching and for the kind words. - Van
To clean my chain I put the bike up on a wheel stand as you do. I put a rag in my left hand under the middle of the chain as you do. And I know people are going to freak out on my technique, but I turn the bike on and put it in first and let the wheel spin as I spray WD-40 down through the chain into my rag hand below. I then close my rag hand around the chain to catch excess. I even pinch the center slightly to get the middle of the chain. After about 30 seconds I switch to my chain wax and do the same thing. The rags are not tattered, in fact they look like the one you used, so no loose ends to catch the chain. Been doing it this way for 35 years with never an incident. ----- I have to say, I like that chain alignment tool you used. I had a laser about drove me cross-eyed.
+Wabbit1961 I would agree that is a good approach, thanks for sharing. - Van
Safety wiring / filling the oil filter etc. RESPECT : no such thing as overkill when it pertains to safety & endurance .
If your doing the job, any job .
DO IT RIGHT & do it right the first time - every time .
Useing the best tools , components , fluids etc. avalible within your given budget .
Great video - well done .
Thank you for watching and the kind words! - Van
One of the best diy service vids out there, great job STG Brian. Look forward to seeing more vids on the R3.
Thanks man!
this helped so much with my first service did it all my self thanks brother for all the great videos regarding the r3
Thanks man! It means a lot!
Sportbike Track Gear can you recommend a budget method of lifting the bike for home users/street rider? I can spend up to a couple hundred bucks ideally and I see some cheap electric options and some expensive manual ones
Best R3 maintenance/upgrade vids on YT
+Tom West Glad to hear you think so! Thanks for watching!
I own MT 03 (2017) and it has the same engine, same chassis and everything, except the front fairing...
I could proudly say, it's the best bike ever.
omg i tilted my head when he was moving the chain guard to let us have a better look.
Very nice video, only sugestion i have is to put links on the video description to all the products you use for the mantainance.
One thing i Disagree on, using a tool to tighten oil filter, you can easily over tighten it and make the seals useless. You can easily hand tighten a oil filter just enough wear the seal will bond and it will be difficult to get it off the next time.
Shift-Light I go as tight as I can get it by hand. If it’s really difficult to get a grab on it I’ll do the same then add a eighth of a turn for just that extra insurance.
Another great video. As a new rider and R3 owner, I really appreciate it.
Appreciate you man!
I don’t even own my R3 yet and I won’t for a few years but this is a thing of beauty.
Awesome bike you will love it! - Brian Van
Thanks for the great video!! coming up on my first R3 service - very good explanation of everything involved: tools/oil/filter/chain lube. Being a newb this is the 1st time seeing the safety wire, very smart - thx for the demo!! Awesome stuff, great video as always - love the fact that you do these, keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching! - Van
I dont own a bike stand so ill have to tighten my chain with the bike on the kick stand.. Appreciate you young sir, thanks alot!
You are welcome and thank you for watching! - Van
I love your R3 videos!! Keep them coming Van!
We will have more videos for the R3 once we get closer to our riding season here in MI. - Van
I just did my first service on my r3. Was a very easy job. Thanks for show us what to expect! Working at a shop... I just dont understand why all dealerships have to tighten that filter that much...
+Zachary Adair Thanks for watching! Glad we could help!
From what I've learned so far and have been told prior.. any oil filter that has a nut on the top is not meant for installation with a wrench. The nut is meant for the removal process but it all really depends on how much torque you're putting down if you chose to use a wrench to tighten it. Hand tight is all it needs for most car/bike oil filters. Some people may not know this and can end up stripping the threads on the filter or in worst case, the threads on the block side.
+Jayee In most cases I would say you are giving good advice! I feel comfortable with my torque sensitivity with a wrench so I worry about it less than most. I have for sure seen my fair share of over tightened oil filters! Great advice, thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for this How-To, I subscribed to your channel specifically because of how thorough you are when it comes to bike and bike maintenance.
+Ruben Aceves Thanks for the sub! Don't forget to tell your friends!
Brian, you saved me so much money on my exhaust, and now you saved me so much on this I got to spend the money on tools :D
This video is gonna one In handy when I change my r3 oil. I just wanted to say thanks
You are welcome, happy to help out. - Van
Thank you for this detailed and very good video. I have just bought Yamaha R25 and this video helps me a lot. Great job.
I will totally do my first service at my Yamaha dealer after my get my R3 next week (new owner) so they can deal with overthighten filter.
Other than that, great job on video, I will totally do it by my own after 1st service since your video has great step-by-step informations.
Thanks!
You are welcome and thanks for watching! - Brian Van
This is very calming

That's a great vid! Will definitely follow your lead if I get my R3. Thanks bro! Keep em coming
Will do brotha!
I love doing maintenance on the things I own. Thanks for this well made video.
Thank you for watching!
Perfect walkthrough thanks alot. Great for novice mechanics and first time bike servicers such as myself.
I'd love to do my own work on my upcoming new R3, though in Australia where I am if you don't get your bike serviced and signed off by an authorised bike mechanic each interval you void your warranty. Thanks for the video made my morning!
+Probo X The more I hear about Australia, the more I wonder why you lot haven't overthrown your government.
Mainly because they are all the same. It doesn't which person is in charge. So long as they don't ban motorbikes and/or cut my pay in half "She'll be right"
So much I learnt!!! Hats off to you bro
Happy to help out. - Van
Dam man.... I cant wait till I get my bike.... I think I'm gonna be spending a good chunk of time cleaning it and keeping it in almost perfect condition.(as well as I can) good video! Keep it up man!
Thanks for watching! - Van
Haha just wait till u drop it for the first time XD
Excellent clip, mate. Very informative, very helpful. I dont own an R3 yet, but at least I'll know how to do things to it once I do own one. :) I know it takes a fair effort to make these videos, and the effort is definitely appreciated. Thanks for posting.
its very useful for r3 owner , thx for doing this
+宇承高 Thanks for watching! Don't forget to subscribe!
+Sportbike Track Gear
sure , can you guys also made a video to teach r3 how to install use charger from battery?? haha recently want to diy to my r3
That was a good video. Helped me a lot with my change adjustment on my 2016 r3
Love the videos, I like your meticulous approach to everything. Will definitely be buying from you guys in the future for my new r3
Thanks for watching!
i'm getting a r25 in the near future this video will help me how to service the r25
Great video, very informative. Please keep up the videos for the Yahama R3!!!
Fantastic video. Congrats and regards from Spain!
+Javi Aznar Thank you!
Just bought a 2015 R3 with 370 miles from original owner, first service is coming up and you're video will save me some money from taking it to a dealer and have them service it, thank you for this video. Quick question, does brake fluid, and other fluids have to be flushed and fill with new fluid for its first service? Also after doing oil change with this synthetic oil, when will my next oil change be?
Awesome video man, thank you. Will be doing this on my first service.
Another quality video Brian, well done
Thanks!
I'm getting a R3 today now I know what to do for the service
Hello ! Thanks to this video and others made me learn and maintain my bike. But could you do a valve clearance video ?
Gracias a sus videos coloqué un M4, con mis propias manos!
Great video. However the safety wire on the filter was backwards. You want it pulling it tight, not loose.
Thanks for watching. The nut on the top of the filter makes it difficult to pull in the right direction. That said adding safety wire to the oil filter that was left loose will most likely not be able to prevent it from leaking. I look at this as another opportunity to double check that the filter is tight more in the first place. Once you have the wire twisted up and secured to anchor point on the bike it will help prevent the fastener (filter in this case) from rotating even if you are not able to position it so that you get a good pull in the direction that would tighten the fastener. - Brian Van
you are a great teacher..
im going to own a R25 soon, i think R3 and R25 is almost the same..
greedy dealership wants a freakin $360 for that.
Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation
Happy to help! - Van
Saved me $90 bucks thanks bro 🤙🏾
Happy this was helpful! - Van
Hello. Very informative and detailed video. Quick question. Is this video applicable to first service a 2023 yamaha R3 as well ? If so, what is the brake cleaner you used up there ? Thanks
Yes, this will work well for a 23 also. You can use any generic brake cleaners. Here is a link to some we sell: www.sportbiketrackgear.com/lucas-brake-cleaner/
Great video. I'm doing it myself. Very helpful! Cheers!
Happy to help out! - Van
Very good video... Two thumbs up Brian!
Thanks so much man. I am just a little worried about the tension part.
+Raphael Nixon (The Wild Wolf) Don't stress too much. Just make sure the chain isn't too tight and that it isn't slapping around when you ride and you'll be all good!
Sportbike Track Gear Thankyou man ^^
extremely useful! like and favorite this video since im getting the r3 next year
Quick question, shouldn't the bike be on the side stand while doing the chain slack adjustment? Also for the oil level the bike should be on level ground instead on the paddock stand to prevent overfilling imo. Thanks for this video!
There is a similar load on the swingarm when the bike is on the kickstand or the rear stand. For the oil level there will not be a major difference with the bike on the rear stand. If you are concerned you can double check with the rear tire on the ground. - Van
People actually pay for oil changes on their bikes? Man.. I just did my very first motorcycle oil changes thanks to van it was easy peasy lemon squeezy
Happy to hear this was helpful! - Van
Have you ever heard the MGP growler slip on ? I actually thought it was the full exhaust because it’s so loud, it actually sounds like I’m hurting my r3 😂. I’m getting it checked out because it just doesn’t sound like anything I’ve heard in videos.
I doubt this is hurting the bike at all, you should be fine. - Van
Sportbike Track Gear so it turns out it wasn’t installed properly I guess because I can feel exhaust pulses escaping all around the area where the slip on is fitted to the original piping, no idea how they got that wrong or if I need a sleeve of sorts to fix it or just a new exhaust but it explains why it sounded odd
Hello Brian, i really enjoy all your videos, i've learned lot of tricks and tips for my r3 thanks to all of your excelent videos, in regards to the oil change, which oil filter do you consider is the best? between the vortex you are using, the k&n, or Hiflofiltro? to use it with Motul 7100 in my bike, best regards
We are using the HiFlo filters on our bikes now. - Van
I like the safety wire idea but why drill through and attach to the pan? Why not just attach the filter nut right to the drain plug? If the wire is in tact, neither will be able to rotate loose.
Please make a service vedio on Kawasaki Ninja 300
You are Awesome Bud, amazing video. Thank You!
You are welcome and thank you for watching! - Van
seriously wow, good vid for my r3....super detailed
This video makes me excited to work on my bike!
true american craftsman, a dying breed....
Appreciate you! - Van
Hi
Can you please demonstrate how to replace Yamaha MP3 2017 motorbike left side cover.
I am not familiar with this model. - Van
again like others said your videos save tones of money I did the chain adjustment and I noticed we of on the markers so it's not even and now that side the wheel bearings a little moisture coming out of it was hit by a big rig so I dnt know if that could of damaged rear wheel bearings how do we service those our repack them or lube them up. plus I now need a brake foot pedal was damaged and want to readjust the chain again need the alignment tool and the lube can you help bye answering my question
+jose diaz Those4 questions are pretty detailed, I would say the best way for us to help you is by giving one of our sales reps a call at 888.784.4327! We aim to make everything easier and we appreciate you watching our videos!
Great video and perfect explanation , I just have one question . Would you recommend using nitrogen in tires ?
About the chain tension part. I followed instructions to the t but when i retighten the axle and the adjistment nuts and remeasure the chain sag it always loosens up for some reason and im back to too much sag
Great everything about this video is perfect
If you were to upgrade the pads, what would you go to? And what's your take on the stock tires? I've had my R3 for 2500 miles and love it. Thanks for going through the work to put these videos together.
+Mr.Marty McFly I need to check and see which brands have pads available now. We looked earlier in the year and no one had any yet. For the tires the Michelin perform well, I would most likely stick with them myself. Dunlop does offer the GPR-300 tires which look interesting. - Van
+Sportbike Track Gear I'll have to check out those tires too. Thanks again for the videos and the responses to questions.
Hi! I have the same r3 model. Every time I let go the clutch, at the end of the mouvement, the bike gives me a kick. It’s super annoying as it is impossible to be smooth in the city. Plus when turning on a takeoff, it could potentially be dangerous. I think it should be the clutch who have to be replace but would like to know your opinion. I’m at 11 000km right now.
Awesome channel! Thanks 😊
Hard to say for sure without riding the bike. I would take a look at the clutch adjustment and try to be as smooth as possible. - Van
Pls show also how to change spark plugs for the r3..thanks STG...
Is this video out of date to follows steps for a 2020 R3?
The 2020 is very similar to the 2015. This video should be pretty helpful for that bike as well. - Van
Appreciate It!!! Stay Zoomin 🏍💨
Very helpful video. Thank you.
Happy to hear it was helpful! - Van
Thank you for this video!!!
You are welcome and thank you for watching. - Van
Awesome video, thanks for uploading!
Thanks for watching!
very Good video but I have an 2016 r6. I don't know if the process is the same? or if a video could be made for an r6?
I have about a hundred miles left before my first service so I am going to collect up the materials I need now. I love the chain lube stuff you are using! Do you guys sell it on the Sport Bike Track Gear website? Also I would kind of like to safety wire as well are the plyers available as well from you guys?
+Jack Allen All of it is available on our website! If you need some help gathering everything together don't hesitate to call one of our gear experts! 888.784.4327!
+Sportbike Track Gear You guys don't sell the chain paste, only the spray kind. Also the oil was only available in 4L, not 1L bottles. (Just purchased a few days ago, maybe out of stock?)
Likely on back-order. We have been having some trouble with our Motul vendor lately but we are working on getting those items back in stock!
Just love your posts....nice and helpful. I just say Good Job.
It will help me a lot, thank you.
Thanks, out of curiosity did you change the title of this video or did you know ahead of time that a refresh was coming in 2019? I only ask because it’s 4 years old but says “2015-2018 R3”.
The title was edited at some point. - Van
i want to see the first service and other service on yamaha r1 2015
great content, thank you!
Thank you for watching! - Van
Good work 🏁
Great video as always 👍✌️
Nice tutorial :) How ever, why would the sight glass show lots of small bubbles forming after its 2nd ever oil and filter change?
If the bike was on front and rear stands would it read proper? I’m just wondering cause I have a hard time holding the bike level and trying to read that thing and fill it with oil at the same time because of where it is located... and I don’t have one of those front wheel lock holder things..
Can we have a video on complete engine check up of R3 please
