We used to use the sleeping bag tote bag to hold our boots. Turn it inside out and put the boots in then put it the sleeping bag with you and your clothes. If your boots are muddy it will keep the inside of the cover clean for storing your bag the next day.

Try to be comfortable, less chances of freezing in the morning. -Just some of the things I've learned living in the Rockey Mountains as an 11B.
I worked on a three person trail crew in Idaho for three years and we would work 10 days on and 4 off. Rain, snow, sleet, wind or shine, that's what we lived in so I had a one person backpack tent and a down sleeping bag and that was home. In the worst of weather it was a wonderful place to have for a good nights sleep.
I defenitely would have been a terrible soldier. Been real camping a few times before and yeah I'm not doing that again unless I really need to. You learn fast🤣
Coldest night i ever spent in the military was when I slept on the floor in the bed of my Duece and a half. Air mattress was a poor insulator. Cold wind above, cold wind below and an ice cold GI
“Do not use anything that is potentially going to explode and make everything wet as a pillow” also do not use anything that can explode in general as a pillow. Being wet sucks, being dead well.. you can figure that out
I slept in a body bag and slept like a baby. They used to drop rations in them and I was done being eat by red ants. Woke up to everyone sleeping in them as well and almost had a panic attack.
Tips: Do now wear full snivel in your fart sack. You will sweat and when you get out of your sack you will freeze. Put one of your canteens between your sleep sleep system in extreme cold weather. Otherwise, you’ll walk up to a block of ice. Put your boots inside the foot of your sleeping bag. Better than putting your feet in freezing cold boots
Loved buttoning up the hatches on my m1 and sleeping nice and cozy on the floor(if you put the gun at max depression you have plenty of room)and waking up and using the boiling vessel to warm up some nice coffee then drive around in my nice heated vehicle
I always used my rucksack as a pillow. Didnt have it under my head and more so pressed the top of my head against it. It wasnt super comfy but it worked
Use the stuff sack and your clothes for the next day for your pillow and keep your hydration as warm as possible at your feet where you don't have it under pressure or freeze and break. Just some experiences with stuff Get dry bags and wrap it up in your jacket for a pillow so you have plush sleeping like that.
One last thing: don't fall asleep against a truck tire or next to a tank tread. You may be waking up as the vehicle starts up and drives away. You will be flattened like a pancake.
If you have time and you have to sleep in a fox hole Light the bottom of it on fire before you put you try to sleep down there this will help dry out the hole and make it have Smokey smell so you won’t smell your own feet all night Just remember to make sure that the fire is fully out no embers left inside to potentially burn you and you’re sleeping bag
Imagine getting bumped in the night and charging the enemy with just boots webbing bodyarmour helmet and a pair of boxers whilst firing a GPMG sounds like fun
When u sleep in your shit try o wear as little as clothing you can. If you must sleep with you gear on like in hostile area. Wrap some plastic bags around your boots to prevent fucking it all up. Personally i had dry and wet kit. Only use dry kit inside bag and once out change to your wet kit back on. This way you can keep your bag as dry as long days as possible.
I was always taught to sleep nude that way when you put on your clothes it wouldn’t have acclimated to your body temp making your clothes colder outside. That or something else they were wanting 🤨
You build a hooch or just are careful where you place your bivvy. The bivvy will most of the time keep you dry and a hooch will add a layer of protection.
We had an LTC (who was a true FOBBIT & power point ranger) tell the armorer what he want for his M16, to be basically made into a fully tricked out M4. Armorer looked at me after that “order” was placed and told me to “watch out, that man will get you killed.” I told the armorer not worry, the LTC never leaves his office in the FOB.
