May God rest your soul Gerry Rafferty. You are and always will be my favourite singer. Sad to think that you will write no more of your beautiful music but what a legacy you have left us.
This has become my fave video and GF song. In my mind I'm in a high street pub in Aberdeen, eating fish and chips, suckin' on cider, and happy as a clam.
@@borisVspider66 It's hideous how it takes someone's death to truly appreciate their work. I've heard songs like *"Baker St"* and *"Right Down the Line",* but there's so much more he's done in his lifetime than many people realise or know about.
It certainly is, this is actually my video, i am Dave Lennon (uploader) but i lost access to this account.. i went to Gerrys funeral and was in the documentary about his life made by the BBC after he passed away.
@@borisVspider66 Is it, now? Thanks for the awesome video! The video reminds me of our Hiram M. Chittenden locks here in Seattle USA. I'm sure there other shipyards and locks on or near the coast of the world's continents.
Heard this on the radio when it was released, went out and bought the album. This song hits me and brings tears to my eyes., then and now. A masterpiece. Thank you Gerry.
I love that song - North and South is an excellent work as well as all the other albums Gerry wrote. Such a unique voice he had - sad that he isn´t still there!
Gerry Rafferty. I think I bought 'City to city' just because of the nice cover even before Baker Street were knowned here in Sweden. I immediately got cought by (I think) the third, song 'Right down the line'; the sort of hanging vocals and the bass line. And then later he got really famous. His music has stayed with me trough all these years, his vocals and songs and arrangements has inspirered me a lot!
My first album was Snake and Ladders, not the best one really. Later I heard City to City and then Sleepwalking. Gerry Rafferty is one of my big leading stars, musically.
awesome. song . . and such a singer and writer. . love this song . . he goes into hall of fame with big boys. E. John . stones . and of course the Beatles .
I agree. The first time I'd heard this song was from *"Right Down the Line - very best of Gerry Rafferty."* It didn't have the intro with the pipes. I was shocked when I heard *this* version. I was like *"What?! Why the hell did they leave out the pipes?! That would've made it more fun to listen!"*
Very folk music! Something like Steeleye Span in the 70*ies with a touch of rock! North& South was meant to be: London to Scotland and back! Thx for sharing.
This track is on a Best of Gerry Rafferty, a CD available used via amazon. This is one of many standout tracks, melding rock with his trademark vocals, plus lilting traditional pipes. Thanks to 'hodgepic007' for rescuing so much of the rare Rafferty
My only complaint with *"Right Down the Line: Best of Gerry Rafferty"* was that they left out the intro to this song. They should *never* do that, even if it's to play on radio.
Just subscribed to this channel tonight as a result of the Gerry Rafferty documentary and of course, his music. Will check out your other added videos David :)
God I love his music...sadly now more than when he was around ...kind of disapeared from North America after Baker St. This vid is so good as well...kind of get a kick reading all of your UK'ish comments here..I think he and Rebus would get a kick out of that...Cheers from Halifax Nova Scotia...Canada
Apparently, Rafferty felt as though he wasn't being respected for his songwriting. Apparently, it was not enough for people to enjoy his music, they had to respect him and his songwriting.
Thanks hodgepig007,I Don't know how many times I've listened to this song since it was uploaded.....still a great song from a great artist.....a shame he is no longer with us.......R.I.P. Gerry. I've seen your name in a website related to Gerry...I think after his website folded..I think it had the word gold in it....is it still going if so can you upload it here as I've lost it due to a PC collapse.....thanks once again.
@mrbarleymob Who says it's without argument? Since you use that charming epithet (look it up) 'sweaty' I assume you don't even live in Scotland so I doubt your assumption holds much weight. In either case I don't particularly give a rat's ass for your opinion.

Hideously underappreciated. Gerry Rafferty was one of the best singer/songwriters ever.
You got that right dude

just amazing... thanks.
wonderful..........great video ......aaaannnnddd as usual lovely tune
The drum line in this track really hits me. Aaron Ahmun pounding the skins with such power to lift this great GR track.
This is superb
only now I understand the meaning behind his words. thank you Gerry

Great tune--love the bagpipes
One of his best records
Excellent.
RIP Gerry Rafferty
R.I.P. you where amazing.
You did it again, dude! Another great tribute to Gerry. This song is the definition of Celtic Rock.
i`ve been looking for this record for years, ironically i was working in a container yard in Australia when it was in the charts.
Uplifting, even if i was doing something else at the same time.
Thank you. And well done Gerry.
Right to the core. Brrrr, awsome.
I agree. This is one of my favourite songs by the late singer/songwriter, next up Baker Street, and Family Tree.
Just subscribed to this channel tonight as a result of the Gerry Rafferty documentary and of course, his music. Will check out your other added videos David :)
Maybe my fav song of Gerry´s
love this song!!!
Great video too.
I've only started to investigate his albums, but so far, I'm preferring his later albums to his big 70's albums for the most part.

@hodgepig007 I love this song too. One of my fav songs of Gerrys.
If there was a way to wear out a CD by playing it, I would already have. To use the vernacular...it don't get no better than this.
Great harmony between celtic music and rock only gerry can do that ...
Is that the Soo Locks? Great song no matter what!
Great written Dave Lennon
Har denna på VINYL ;-))
The video itself reminds me of Seattle's Ballard Locks.
I'm sorry to hear that. They can be fun. Watching ships and boats coming and going. :)
very celt booom !!
video is fantastic, but what's that random noise @3.19 ? lol

a massive Gerry fan

@mrbarleymob maybe some people are just INTERESTED and they may not have the LINER (not linear) notes.
The best music comes out of hard cities like Glasgow Liverpool Manchester and Newcastle. Steel towns a proletariat forced in common adversity.
