- In today's video, I update you on how the back lawns are looking. They're not perfect, but compared with last year, the difference is night and day!

same thing with mine, aerated and topdressed too late and now I have a mess. although it is a much better mess than the one I've got last winter, so there is an improvement, the lesson is - I need to do the autumn routine on mine a bit earlier this season. Also will be overseeding with fescue this spring, as rye grass really does not thrive in a couple of shady areas. but keep going mate - you keep us all motivated, that is most important!
Nice one, cheers 👍🏻
Glad to hear I'm not the only one that rye hasn't worked for. At the front it does well, but there's a small part in the shade and it's already died back quite a bit compared to the parts in the sun.
Re turfed mid December, cut yesterday for first time, looks pretty good. Same as yours, in shade all winter and into spring.
Stay off until it dries out a bit, good luck mate 😊
Good luck with your new lawn too, should be sound come spring, it’ll have plenty of time to establish 👍🏻
Be patient! I did this a year ago - you’ll find it hard to not immediately reseed areas in spring, but honestly you won’t need to and you can make these lawns too dense. Regularly cut it and it’ll bounce back well ❤
That's what I'm hoping. May be a while with it taking the sun a lot longer to get on the back lawn, but it should be worth the wait!
If you are going to replant in the raised beds i would go for shade loving winter flowering evergreen called Sarcoccoca confusa. Also known as Christmas or sweetbox. As well as being evergreen it will produce beautiful black berries followed by scented cream/white flowers. It is stunning. There is also Euonymus 'Paloma Blanca' that will tolerate shade. Also a beautiful evergreen. New growth produced beautiful white/cream leaves. I would put one of these shrubs in the raised bed and the other along the the front of the seated area. Get a few water guzzling plants in the bottom corner like Fatsia japonica i think i see one towards the back of the raised lawn area. 👌
Thanks for posting this - I've made a note of them and I'll have a look. Thirsty plants are a must on the top tier!
Love the channel and am having similar issues yo what you had last year. Do you have a link to where you bought the fescue seed ?
Nice one!
If you have a look on the Lawn Association website, you’ll find it on their store 👍🏻
Looking at the back wall where the sun was. All i could think about was using mirrors to direct the light onto your lawn 😂. Was also looking at the sleepers where the dark patches are, could they be areas where water is pooling in the space above?
A few have mentioned that. May make the garden look bigger at the same time! 😂
And I have thought that, I may have to remove some of the stones to have a look.
It definitely looks 100% better than last year, so you must be doing something right,
Have you decided what you are cutting with this year, are you keeping the Allett, or using the web push mower more.
I'm thinking of getting a electric cylinder for my big lawn and using the web for my 2 smaller lawns
I’m not too sure yet. I’ve just had the Allett serviced, so I recon I’ll swap between both this year. I think I’ll have to hang on longer to use the Allett though as it weighs a ton, and I don’t fancy putting on my lawns until they’ve dried out a fair bit, whereas the Webb will be fine with how light it is.
Can you overseed with creeping bentgrass on the top lawn as an experiment? that stuff grows in water as ive seen in my local dog walking fields! only trouble is buying it in small quantities
I’ll have a look into it. With the density of bent grass, it should be able to take in more of the water. It’s absolutely worth a try
@@NoviceGardener please try it
The video i was waiting for!. Going to order my 80/20 fescue/bent from L.A soon.
How long was there delivery from order to delivery?
You sowed the 80/20 mix didnt you? i cant remember.
Their advice in the past 12 months has been brilliant. Seed has done so much better than what was down before too.
It was the 60/40 mix I put down. Delivery wise, I think it was a week or two.
I did the online course last year, i have been revising over it again today😂.
Thanks, gives me an idea when to kill the rye off n put the order in for the seed.
You can be happy of results, more nordic countrys lawn is cover by snow layer.. so half of the year no any green
The one week of snow we had here definitely doesn't compare! Can imagine it's a nightmare trying to get it to recover after the winter.
When is it to early to cut my lawn .. we've moved into a new home and on the front we have long (5in) turf , out the back seeded (4in) long . Ground is still very soft but grass is dry .
Maybe a bit early to cut if the soil is soft, but you should be able to take the top off if you're careful. I've cut my front lawns recently just because they had a bit of growth over the past month or so.
@NoviceGardener cheers, wasn't gonna scalp it .. just to a tidy up on a high setting..
Should be sound doing that 👍🏻
How’s that 2 grand reel mower getting on?
It's enjoyed its hibernation in the garage over winter! Just had it serviced. Won't be able to use it for some time yet, but should be sound come the back end of March.
So much for the lawnsith's.
The fescue,will win😅
To be fair to you, you predicted that from the start and have stayed strong since! 😂
Bang on!
Ryegrass is also native to the u.k.
It’s a much newer grass species, developed as cattle feed originally, hence the fast vertical growth.
What grass seed and fertilisers are you opting for this year if your scarifying and overseeding?
I'll be using True Grass on the back lawn again this year, but I'm open to looking at some different things. I'm going to have a proper look at what's out there this month and sort a plan ready for spring.
I bet you've thought about moving house to a less shady spot.
Not on the cards unfortunately, but I'd love the sun to do me a favour and just come right over the top all year round! 🤣
Now stay off it until it starts growing
Definitely! Roll on spring
