not good enough here in San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles. Only 7/18, 95-105F, a little over 3 weeks into Summer and my tomato plant flowers don't set fruits anymore. I have a 40% shade cloth and do deep watering. Will up it to 50 or 60% cloth, is there anything else I can do??

The heat feels terrible, even though today at 90 degrees is not the highest of summer temps I have been through. But it FEELS hotter somehow. My tomato plants and some others are not taking it well. So I have been moving some of them into the shade. they were in partial shade, but even that didn't seem to be enough, as they were wilting. Container gardening is good in that respect in that you can move them around if they are not too heavy or too many.
I hope this heat subsides soon.

I have had to put up shade cloth for my tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplant. I used 40% shade cloth.

@@CountryLivingExperience Oh, BTW...I made the same mistake and bought some of that unedged shade cloth. I ended up wrapping portions of edge in a few layers of duct tape and hammering in some grommets. Then I used paracord to secure it.
But, I am glad you showed me that I had to burn the ends because I am having a time with it fraying.

I live in the high plains where the sun is more intense and the air is dry. Transplants must be shaded for few days, even when they have been previously hardened off. But I have a way to shade all my crops, fencing, posts, etc, and they go on and off based upon heat intensity and strong winds. Mulching with straw helps retain moisture, too. When we have a cloudy or cooler day, everything comes off. We have such extreme changes.

New subscriber, Thank you , We have been using acdemey camping rain/ sun 4 legged canopy tents & have been moving it around our different Garden areas ,
When I succession planted more pepper plants I made myself , even tho I hardened them a few I put in grow bags closer to my Kitchen on Our Long deck they died within 2 days from our Texas Sun & heat , So i knew I needed to shade the Bigger area of peppers & my Sweet potato slips I made myself ,
The tents did a great job plus we could move them around ,
But now its time to succession plant more tomato plants so I heard from other creators I follow to put up Shade cloth .
Thats how I found you & Im so glad I did ,
We are in Montgomery County , Texas its HOTTER THEN NORMAL forsure.
Also I purchased 20 roots of Comfrey Do you think I should shade those as well ???
As the camping tents really did an amazing job letting my 45 different pepper plants take & grow great & more ping tung eggplants ,we have so much eggplants already its amazing & our Sweet potatoe slips took off great & didnt burn.

I honestly don’t know how y’all can stand the summer heat and humidity.
We live in north north WA state. When it gets to 90 degrees here older people die from the heat.
Personally when it gets above 80 degrees it’s too hot for us.

It is pretty brutal. I have gotten somewhat used to it. I grew up in Michigan and never had to deal with this type of heat there.
can you shade most of your Garden from the front I live in Oklahoma and the humidity is bad sometimes I have to water my garden three times a day because it's trying out so what can I do
Add some wood chip mulch around your plants. It will home the moisture down in the soil.
I am planning of putting up shade cloth this winter. I was going to use ss cable but never thought of using paracord with cheap carabiners. Great idea. I purchased some paracord about 8 months ago and it was much smaller than previous purchases. Be aware you must check diameter when ordering paracord. I will install the chord then estimate weight of shade cloth and do test to see if it will hang. I am covering about 60' so I am sure I will have to install several supports. Why use shade in the winter. Your plants will need more sun now. If you get 550 paracord it will hold 550 pounds. Be careful of the knockoffs.
@@CountryLivingExperience I am sorry for the confusion about winter. Winter seems to be the only time I have to put it up. Spring, summer, and fall I am so busy.
I plan of sliding the shad cloth to one end of my garden during the winter and then come summer sliding them in place. The carabiner idea was great. I am still working on a new chicken house with an egg collection system. Working out the bugs right now. Most of it is done. I am much slower now then 10 years ago. I feel like you could do something against the PVC bending if you're bothered by it. Just put some cord on the pipe and into the ground under tension, so it's pulled straight. That then might let you put the rest of the cord that's holding up the shade cloth under more tension as well.

Since you have had the two brand how have they held up? I have been looking on Amazon for the shade cloth. Seems every brand they sell 72 % love them 28% say they do not last long. , and the gromets pull out . Tip for the plastic clips, that keep popping open . Take a self taping screw. It should never pop loose again.
They have both held up fine. Grommets are still in place on the one I purchased.

Hello, I’m Canadian in Southern Japan and growing lots of watermelon this year. It’s late July now and we’re having a heat wave. It’s 42C (105F). I hear mixed opinions: my neighbor tells me shade cloth is not required, but the staff at the Garden Center recommends shade cloth. I don’t know who to believe. I know watermelon likes full sun, but am thinking 105F may be too hot! With shade cloth, do you figure my watermelon will still ripen well? Do you figure I should use the shade cloth or not?? Thanks!
It works well for me especially in 100° temps. I would try it out and see what results you get.

I have 40% cloth. Yes, you can just move the cloth over the plants in the middle of the day. I know many people who do that.
