Henry's method of applying chokes is phenomenal. He starts with 1% then 2% then 3% and so on until it's lights out. As an older practitioner I really appreciate his methods for longevity.
From what I understand, this is the way Helio taught it to Rickson. Energy efficiency; hold a choke for as long as you need to - you should never get to Bernardo's point in the video where he was potentially burning out his arms.
@@jacktaufer6461 I just wanted to say that I have also greatly enjoyed the videos of yours that I've found online. You come across as a fantastic professor!
Henry is one of the best practitioners AND instructors. Many can’t be both. Also took the least amount of time to get back belt from Rickson. I was blessed to train directly under Rickson and Henry, sometimes at the same time!
That would be awesome. I was training jiu jitsu here at a place where i live, its brazilian jiu jitsu but we never learn anything like what henry or rickson talks about, I want to learn invisible jiu jitsu or like henry says his hidden jiu jitsu. thats the real bjj. in my opinion. I think eddie bravo is legit to, 10th planet is legit.
Back in the late 1990s, I was taught an alternate placement for the non-strangling arm, where you reach back and grip the back of your own head (instead of placing the forearm behind your training partner’s head). Placing the non-strangling arm behind your own head offers three advantages: 1. It completely hides that arm from your training partner. 2. It rotates your strangling elbow further around your training partner’s neck, placing it more in-line with their chin. 3. Reaching for the back of your own head automatically makes you shrug your shoulders back, tightening the stranglehold around your training partner’s neck.
Who taught you this? Was it from a different system? A lot of older stand up systems have different mechanics for the RNC. I'm always interested in learning this stuff.
Update! I saw this video this morning before my njbjjf competition. I pulled off this exact rear naked choke & won gold in no-gi. Pinched my elbows, made a fist, & shrugged. Thank you for this video!
I'm a white belt and this works great for me. Effortless strangling. Without resistance I didn't even hit 5% strength. Thanks for sharing this knowledge!
You know Bernardo can just hear John Danahers speaking in his head with a Jedi mind trick. "Pull the elbow, engage the large Latimus Dorsi muscles,. . . For extreme breaking pressure"
Hey Paul, im glad they way I explained and broke it down made such a huge difference for you! I've worked really hard on developing a deep understanding of Jiu-Jitsu and becoming a good teacher so I really appreciate the kind words
I know it's a big thing to have been Rickson's student, but I think Henry is one of the best instructors in the world and should be announced by his name only.

Henry Akins is such a great teacher and a conveyor of solid Jiu-Jitsu information. His instructional videos on BJJ Fanatics are excellent. I have his soul stealer and choke escapes series which I highly recommend. I am hoping to catch a daily deal on his turtle system, where I find myself quite often being Ia relative beginner. Bernardo, please hear me out :)
Thank you professor Akins and professor Faria. Professor Akins I have been incorporating a lot of your details to make what I do well even better. As newly promoted blue belt details are key to a more efficient game.
It’s not collapsing the arteries that’s like a stroke x 100. It’s called ‘vascular occlusion’ - meaning you simply need to cover the carotid then bring the chin down
There are sometimes multiple ways to do things in Jiu-Jitsu the advice I always give is when there are multiple ways to do something is test it for yourself and see which works better for you. I prefer the method I teach because it takes so little effort and can easily get the tap even if they have their hands deep inside defending
Thanks Henry, especially the aside about the arteries and how subtle the force is. I'm just guessing but with so many chokes wrenching into the neck in search of the sweet spot, we make it harder for ourselves because then there's panicked neck muscles in the way. I've experienced one ' new' choke mid-role where neither of us new it was on until blood started to drip out his nose. Embarrassing, and effortless.
I consider myself a student of Henry's. I am also a big fan of a lot of what Danaher does and teaches. In this instance, I like Henry's method better than Danaher's. Though they both are far more effective than how traditionally taught. The 2 advantages I see to Danaher's are: 1) Danaher's method is easier to teach a beginner, though not by much; 2) Danaher's method can be used to very effectively choke with one arm. So, my take is that try to learn Henry's as it uses much less strength, you can hold for much longer, and it's as tight as hell even if the opponent has his hands in and chin tucked...it won't matter. But, also learn Danaher's so that you have the one arm option available to you.
Let's all be grateful for brains that can learn hidden details :) remember the spirit of ju jitsu and humanity itself is based on community, family, and co-operation... At our best- We compete by seeing who can work the best with each other.. funny huh?
There is a big difference between collapsing an artery and a superficial vein. Arteries have a muscular layer and much thicker walls than veins, especially major arteries. So thats not really accurate what he is describing at around 5:10 . A big muscular artery like the carotid nested in between major muscles and under pressure from blood flowing through it is not simply collapsed completely by a little pressure. But ofc the lumen of the artery does not have to be collapsed completely to diminish the blood flow sufficiently as to elicit loss of consciousness.
Ok. But his point is you don’t have to squeeze as hard as everyone always does with their face turning purple and their arms shaking because they’re squeezing so hard. It still doesn’t take much pressure if you do the right kind of squeeze.
LOL there's not that BIG a difference. He was collapsing the hand vein with a finger tip and the carotids with his arms. The "big muscular' carotid can be collapsed with your thumb and finger tip. Just press those into your carotids and you'll start to feel the O2 starvation right away.

Love how this guy still doesn't know the basic difference between Chokes and Strangles. First he confuses people by calling strangles chokes, and then further confuses by claiming that chokes aren't chokes but "pain on windpipe". 😅 Dudeh, literally the very definition of Choke is that it attacks the windpipe (that's why the pain before drowsiness). Its the Strangle that attacks the carotid arteries (hence drowsiness without pain).
Henry's method of applying chokes is phenomenal. He starts with 1% then 2% then 3% and so on until it's lights out. As an older practitioner I really appreciate his methods for longevity.
