Most of the Bihari Muslims living in Kolkata were Pakistani supporters, they went to East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) as it's closer to Bihar than West Pakistan of that time and after the liberation of Bangladesh they faced exodus that's why they had to flee somewhere and they chose Kolkata as a safe heaven.

Bihari Muslims did support the Pakistanis - did not expect Bangladesh to be liberated. Later the Pakistan Government refused to take them to Pakistan. Hence, they got stuck in Bangladesh now. I was a student of BA when Bangladesh came into existence. Millions of people were mercilessly butchered both by armed Pakistani supporters and armed Bengali supporters. In the frenzy they forgot that they were killing their own brothers and sisters, the only difference being in language. I firmly believe that both the linguistic groups were Muslims just in the namesake. It was a very very tragic phase in the history of the subcontinent. However, when Bangladesh became independent an agreement between the Pakistan and Bangladesh govts was signed for the exchange of linguistic populations. Majority of the Urdu speaking people, popularly known as Biharis, were to be accommodated in Pakistan. But after some initial success of the project the Pakistan govt practically backed out of the agreement and left the rest of the stranded people to their fate in Bangladesh. This was a sort of treachery committed by the Pakistan government ! After fifty years these hapless people living in ghettos are searching for their roots and identity. It is a human problem. Obviously, both the groups belong to the same community, Muslim, but it's unfortunate that the KALIMA cannot bind them together. They still look upon each other with suspicion and a little bit of historical hatred. ISLAM has always been used as a political tool both in Pakistan and Bangladesh. But the fact is that every consideration supercedes Islam and brotherhood has been relegated to the bottom in both the countries. Of late, Bangladesh govt has taken some steps to ameliorate the conditions of the Biharis, which is welcome. No good can be expected from Pakistan which is itself mired in various self-destructive problems. Biharis,too, will have to realise the ground realities and merge themselves in the mainstream. No prophet or Caliph will come to their rescue or to solve their problems. Only Brotherhood will do it. Only fake Islam rules the roost in these two countries.

After partition when people from bihar came into present day Bangladesh, they faced multiple bihari - bangali riot. That posed an existencial crisis for this community. I have Bangladeshi Hindu friends who are doing as good as they would have done if they were Indian citizens living in India. My Bangladeshi Muslim friends blame these ‘Bihari’ Muslims who are mostly turned Jamaat-minded by petrodollars from middle-east for the isolated incidents of harassment of Hindus. These incidents are exceptions and the Sheikh Hasina government has taken prompt action each time these have taken place. The larger Bengali society does not have any animosity against Hindu minority. Culturally, Bangladeshis are perhaps more Bengali than the Bengalis of India, though their dialect slightly differs from the way it is spoken in West Bengal; just as Hindi is spoken differently in Bihar and UP, Delhi, Haryana, MP or Chhattisgarh.

Later the Pakistan Government refused to take them to Pakistan. Hence, they got stuck in Bangladesh now. Many are not considered to be Bangladeshi too, probably.

I was a student of BA when Bangladesh came into existence. Millions of people were mercilessly butchered both by armed Pakistani supporters and armed Bengali supporters. In the frenzy they forgot that they were killing their own brothers and sisters, the only difference being in language. I firmly believe that both the linguistic groups were Muslims just in the namesake. It was a very very tragic phase in the history of the subcontinent.
However, when Bangladesh became independent an agreement between the Pakistan and Bangladesh govts was signed for the exchange of linguistic populations. Majority of the Urdu speaking people, popularly known as Biharis, were to be accommodated in Pakistan. But after some initial success of the project the Pakistan govt practically backed out of the agreement and left the rest of the stranded people to their fate in Bangladesh. This was a sort of treachery committed by the Pakistan government !
After fifty years these hapless people living in ghettos are searching for their roots and identity. It is a human problem. Obviously, both the groups belong to the same community, Muslim, but it's unfortunate that the KALIMA cannot bind them together. They still look upon each other with suspicion and a little bit of historical hatred. ISLAM has always been used as a political tool both in Pakistan and Bangladesh. But the fact is that every consideration supercedes Islam and brotherhood has been relegated to the bottom in both the countries.
Of late, Bangladesh govt has taken some steps to ameliorate the conditions of the Biharis, which is welcome. No good can be expected from Pakistan which is itself mired in various self-destructive problems. Biharis,too, will have to realise the ground realities and merge themselves in the mainstream. No prophet or Caliph will come to their rescue or to solve their problems. Only Brotherhood will do it.

After partition when people from bihar came into present day Bangladesh, they faced multiple bihari - bangali riot. That posed an existencial crisis for this community.
Then during 1971, this bihari bangali tension probably intentionally utilized by pakistani army and easily gained their support. Some biharis even joined paramilitary groups that opposed independence of bangladesh and participated in massacres. That made things worse for them as they were being considered as pakistani.

I have Bangladeshi Hindu friends who are doing as good as they would have done if they were Indian citizens living in India. My Bangladeshi Muslim friends blame these ‘Bihari’ Muslims who are mostly turned Jamaat-minded by petrodollars from middle-east for the isolated incidents of harassment of Hindus. These incidents are exceptions and the Sheikh Hasina government has taken prompt action each time these have taken place. The larger Bengali society does not have any animosity against Hindu minority.
