  • Overdrive Pedals by Tone City (Cheap & Good?)
I've heard some good things about Tone City pedals, and they are very affordable. So are they a possible solution if you need a budget friendly overdrive pedal? Let's find out.
The pedals I'll be trying today are the Nobleman, Kaffir Lime, Golden Plexi 1 and 2, and the Bad Horse.
    Enjoy!

It's great to hear more about this type of pedal. They've been on my radar for a while now, and the biggest advantage is that they're relatively portable and compact. Nowadays, there are many pedals on the market, but being able to fit several pedals on a small pedalboard is a huge advantage compared to the bulky boards that look more like chopping blocks in your kitchen .

I did your practice schedule a few months back and it made me so much faster than I thought I could even play! Then I stopped practicing and I flattend out, lol So I gotta practice more but it works so well! THANKS!!! 1234, 4321, 1234, 4321......for every fret! up and down back and forth

@@MrPolevaulter Negative, I need to do that next. I will post a video of it I am ready to let people see what I am doing with my guitar practice :) I also played left handed and boy is that tough! It aligned my brain somehow though because it made it easier to play normal.

My favourite tone city overdrive is the black tea. It's sort of a vox amp in a box type thing, sounds really authentic. You should try it sometime!

They sound good but a couple of them like the Kaffir Lime were pretty noisy. If you want to check out a really cool OD I recommend the Ceriatone Horsebreaker. It is a Klon (Centura circuit) and Bluesbreaker dual circuit that you can run independent or stacked.

There is another pedal doing the same thing called Nordvang 83 Drive...and a clone of this pedal by Demonfx called 83 Drive. The Kaffir Lime is a clone of Xotic BB Preamp. I think that his testing of those pedals here is wrong because they are made for clean amps and his amp is too dirty or gainy for them!

Tone City pedals add that vintage frying bacon tone. More pork for your buck.

The Klon was mentioned. I did a quick look. The used Klon Centaurs go for around $8,000 US these days. (€7,280) This pedal stuff seems a bit strange sometimes. Cheers!

To understand why they cost so much means you have to understand the history of the unit and that it's no longer made. This pedal kind of turned the music world on it's head- it was a new topology, not based on any past circuits- which is rare. And the maker "gooped" the circuit board- he covered it in this black epoxy-like stuff so no one could see the design and copy it. This alone was like issuing a challenge to pedal makers everywhere- everyone was trying to figure it out and make one. And eventually- they did just that- and the maker stopped making the pedal. All this mystery and hype had done it's work though- everyone was intrigued and wanted one. This set the stage for the price to start going up, and up, and up- until it's gotten to where it is today. It is a great drive circuit, one of if not the best ever created most agree. But now it has turned into more of an investment, you buy them to collect more than to use- and to eventually resell one day for a profit.

Very Cool, Thankyou. These pedals all sound awesome and seem great value for money. Always hearing good things about them. 'Static' Noise is a bit of a worry though. And in Australia certain Boss Pedals are $20- to $30- Cheaper. I know which I'd rather have. Cheers

I wonder how they'd behave if used with a switcher and a fully isolated power supply?
It could be that their buffer circuits were interacting, the way that they were connected.
I have their Bad Horse and the Sweet Cream with no problems.
Re Cheap pedals, Yeah you can come unstuck sometimes.
I had two Donner Morphers break on me before I got myself a REAL Suhr Riot ...
To be fair, the second one died when I fumbled the surface mount soldering while trying to modify it ...

I get that same popping noise from several of my EHX pedals. But- the odd thing is- they only do it the first time they're turned on. You turn it on, it pops really loudly- but then it's good for the rest of the time you're playing. But- the next time you play- it does it again- it's like after a certain amount of time it resets and the next time you turn it on- POP!
As for the quality of the pedals- meh. I mean they're not bad, but they're also nothing to write home about- they will suffice, but that's about it. I have the Sweet Cream- I will say they named it perfectly as it's a thickening agent- just like sweet cream. Problem is, it's too thick- starts sounding wooly and sort of muffled at times. Like I said, it will suffice but- nothing to be excited about.

Kinda ironic, recently got a second hand Nobel, as an upgrade to the Kaffir Lime. Saying that, the Durple is an interesting TC pedal. Also feels like a brick compared to the Kaffir Lime, so very different innards?
