  • After a pair of successful flights in 2021, this flight took off out of Christchurch, New Zealand, on the 1st of April, 2022. Hosted by Viva Expeditions, a chartered 787 Dreamliner was flown south towards Antarctica in a bid to observe the Aurora Australis, the Southern Lights.
This time lapse is comprised of over 9400 images filmed from the starboard side of the aircraft. The first frame was shot around 9pm, and the last around 3.15am the following morning, over six hours of continuous filming. At times the storm reached Kp5, potentially as high as Kp6.
Shot with a Sony a7 Mk 3 with a Sigma Art 20mm f1.4 lens, using ISO 12800 and beginning with 2" exposures, though this was reduced to 1" part way through as the storm intensity increased. Mounted on a tripod and protected from any cabin lights via a specially created darkened window shield.
