Hi Folks! Thanks for taking the time to watch this video. The intention of this footage was 2 fold. First, rather than pretty polished footage (there's plenty of that on our channel, please explore it and subscribe), we wanted to show in a first-person sense, what it's like to be out there with us. Second, we were testing new technology which allowed us to walk around with the camera and capture this 4K footage. It wasn't perfect but it was the first UHD real-time footage published to UA-cam and at the time, technologically, it was amazing to be able to pull this off. We've received plenty of great feedback and also plenty that is critical of our techniques. We understand that criticism and appreciate it but hope it's understood what the intent of this footage was meant to be. Before commenting about the "camera motion" take a moment to read the description and then appreciate the technical wonders that made this possible back then. Finally, be sure to subscribe and browse the other vids in this channel to see the pretty polished footage you're looking for without the camera movement. Cheers, The Aurora Chasers
THANK YOU. 99.999999% of northern lights videos are always sped up like a time lapse, which is ok, but I just wanna see what it's like to experience them in person. This video did just that. :) (of course, I want to see them in real life, too. But this will suffice until then.)
Turret exactly what I wanted to comment. Great video, which shows it in real time speed. I have never seen northern lights in person; this video gave the best experience out of all the northern light videos out there, almost all of them heavily processed and time-lapsed.
just spent a very expensive week in Iceland to see the lights. HUGE WASTE OF MONEY. Iceland has and is experiencing the mildest weather ever and so almost every night was overcast so only rain. The tour groups still fob you off with excursions but they are not worth it. Scandinavia is a much better option.
Im from Finland and i have seen northern lights and videos don't really do much justice. Just like watching fireworks from the video and compared to live fireworks. Snow (alot of it) makes it even more beautiful when the colors reflect from it.
I live in Alaska can confirm they move like this in real-time. I saw the entire sky from horizon to horizon covered like this. It was to bright it made the snow around me bright green. It's truly a sight to behold.
Same here and it really never gets old...I remember once in February or March of 2013 even in Anchorage the entire sky was absolutely covered with an aurora so bright the mountains were glowing green...I’ll never forget it
They don't. It's difficult to capture then in real time with most cameras. They're not as sensitive to light and so need a long exposure time; maybe 30-60 seconds per photo, for example. Take a bunch of these photos over the course of a night and put them together in a time-lapse animation, you get that sped-up version we're used to seeing. Certain cameras, like the Sony A7, have a high enough ISO to capture all that dim light, with little "noise", in real-time.
Worth adding to Adrian's good reply here that even with reasonably basic camera equipment you can photograph the aurora providing you have variable exposure settings. Here in the UK it's hard to see the lights, but using services like Aurora Watch it's possible to get pretty accurate alerts. Quite often I go outside and even if I can't see them with my own eyes I'll set up my camera on a tripod and choose the longest exposure I can get and it's possible to get snaps. Obviously not the same as seeing it with your own eyes, but nice to know they're there and I sitll love the feeling!
Living just north of the arctic circle (in Sweden), northern lights are a common sight during the darker half of the year. But despite having seen them hundreds of times, I'm still amazed sometimes... Anyway, the one thing I would say about this video is that it is the first time I ever see a typical aurora captured in smooth and high-resolution real-time video. For the first time, I can give people a link and say "This is what it really looks like". Great work, I'll save the link to this video for sure. Not to see the beauty of the aurora myself (I'll get plenty of that during the next couple of months) but to show the people who have never seen the aurora what they could expect if they come here for a visit. :)

It actually reminds me of the movement of the light in a total solar eclipse. There was a total solar eclipse a couple years ago that crossed the US and another one in 2024 that'll go across Southern US. The light movement when the sun is completely eclipsed moves and shimmers similar to the northern lights.
As someone that's never seen snow in person, much less the Northern Lights, this is completely surreal to me. I've lived in Arizona (Phoenix) my whole life, so seeing something akin to this is very much like fiction. The way the snow sparkles on the ground, how the trees line the sky, the mountains acting as a canvas in the background, makes me think of another world. Haha oh man, and the stars themselves! 2:44 encapsulates everything I love about this video, it's all just so vast and gives real meaning to the word "life". All of this makes for a beautiful (that's putting it lightly) picture, and I am looking forward to one day seeing this in person myself. Euphoric.
Very well put. This video captures the whole experience for me . After all , its not just the northern lights themselves. its the backdrop, the foreground, the cold , the getting there, the remoteness, the tranquility. I feel all that when I watch this and its like I'm there again. I would even enjoy without music , just hearing the snow crunching, peoples chatter and maybe a breeze in the trees :)
Right? I'm in Mexico City. Insanely large and insanely populated place, so for me even trees are like a novelty. Watching videos like this one just leave in awe, it looks like an entire different planet to me. I wonder if people leaving near these remote places look at places such as Phoenix or Mexico City and think "WHAT IS THAT?!". Probably not haha

As someone who grew up in upstate NY, and who has seen a number of amazing displays of the aurora borealis (not for a long while though. I find it interesting to note your comment about how surreal the video is. I say this because, having visited Sedona and other parts of Arizona like Montezuma Castle, I couldn't get over how surreal the Southwest looks to me, and I have been to five continents. Nothing compares to our desert Southwest right here in the US. One side comment about the movement of the aurora in this video. It is FAR more dynamic than 99 percent of all auroras I have ever seen in upstate New York, but the color and structure is somewhat similar. Most of my views (most of them between 50 and 30 years ago, were fairly brief, mostly a dim, greenish color, mostly confined to low in the Northwest through Northeast quadrant of sky, and rarely built to a corona overhead. On two occasions, I was treated to spectacular, brilliant displays that involved nearly the entire sky, had patches of bright, almost laser like red, plus the dominant green, with yellow and even blue mixed in. Even though the nights were moonless, the aurora was bright enough to visibly cast my shadow, and I could read newsprint by the light from it. I have witnessed three total solar eclipses now, and I have to say that, between the two, seeing the aurora like that was even more impressive and awe-inspiring. As incredible as this footage is, it's something you must see yourself. Bucket list material.

Absolutely brilliant visuals! Segment from 1:00 - 1:20 looks like a veil or cloak hanging on the shoulders of the gods. It's no wonder that early man's mind raced with fantastical imagination when gazing upon this. Looks like the dog (Angus?) had a good time too! :-)

The way it's shot makes me feel like I'm tagging along with friends and the dog. I forgot how snow sparkles like that when it's really cold. Saw Aurora in Vermont many years ago. Thanks again, it was wonderful!
The movement of the camera looks awkward and unnatural. I would have rather the camera sat still (like the 10 seconds toward the end) so I can watch the aurora's natural movement without the constant distraction of trees and bushes moving across my view. Otherwise, this is spectacular!
u can still stand still and prove its not time lapse , put ur dog in front of the camera to play and with the other 70% of the camera angles catch the lights

Mayeur000Donz Nothing is weird if it's not rare. What do you think the sun or the clouds or the rain you just saw were? They don't think about it. It's always been this way for them. The lights are peculiar to ancient Inuits no more than the rain is peculiar to you.
cokewentflat I just figured most cultures had stories to explain certain natural phenomena, like Christians thought Rainbows were God's way of apologizing for the Flood, or something. Or some ancient peoples thought the Sun and Moon were gods that chased one another.
It looks edited and so surreal but you realize that it actually IS a natural phenomena... That's how amazing this world is, just the way it was naturally made
I would just like to say thank you so much for going out in the cold to film this. Thanks to all the special effects you see on tv, I've always thought the northern lights came and went like a flash. To see them flow through the air and ripple like that was breathtaking and inspiring.

At this time of day? At this time of year? Localized entirely within this youtube video?
What an amazing, beautifully filmed video. And how privileged you are to witness that! So very jealous!
That's utterly incredible. Need to go see it
Beautiful! Saw the Northern Lights for the first time last month when visiting amazing Iceland. This is exactly what it was. No timelapse, just this. Thanx for sharing!
"... And an aura encircles the throne, like emerald in appearance." Revelation to John 4.3
Amazing Northern lights it's beauty of the sky. Thank you. Take care.
That is kind of creepy...but thanks for showing us what it's like in real-time. They always show them in Fast Speed...this is so cool! Thanks~
Ronn, I've wanted to see a real time Northern Lights video for years. But to see it in such high definition is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing. Seeing them in person is on my bucket list!
So beautiful... Also demon dog @ 4:13
It's stupidly beautiful with the pine trees in the foreground and the background of a clear starry night and the auroras. It's just so amazing.
Revelation 4:3
“And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.”
Watch this at night on the biggest TV you have. Amazing to say the least. I can't wait until I can afford to go see this in person
Now, if only I could contain this entirely within my kitchen.
Riley Jones steamed hams
Maybe if you hermetically sealed your kitchen and filled with gas like neon or argon and used a radio transmitter powerful enough .
Gorgeous!!! Thanks for filming that!!
Is that a shooting star at 3:37? This is so amazing! Thank you!
***** Holy bunch of coolness, Batman!
Good Catch! :D
So cool, right?
Lynn Perry I don't see it
low one but yes. thank you.
That was absolutely majestic! Thank you so much for going out in zero degree weather with the flu no less to bring us this experience. The way it's shot makes me feel like I'm tagging along with friends and the dog. I forgot how snow sparkles like that when it's really cold. Saw Aurora in Vermont many years ago. Thanks again, it was wonderful!
*I can not believe what I'm seeing!!!* _THANKS FOR SHARING!_
Their dog has a better life than me
He does have a pretty good life.
This is beautiful. Just have to add - your dog is so happy, it puts a smile on my face! :D
The movement of the camera looks awkward and unnatural. I would have rather the camera sat still (like the 10 seconds toward the end) so I can watch the aurora's natural movement without the constant distraction of trees and bushes moving across my view. Otherwise, this is spectacular!
Or sat still the entire time. Frustrating. Nevertheless, beautiful to see...
I agree but I think the intention is to prove that it's real time and not a time lapse
u can still stand still and prove its not time lapse , put ur dog in front of the camera to play and with the other 70% of the camera angles catch the lights
Nice photography, northern lights... Beautiful. Re- share
A blessing from the lord.
This is a fantastic addition to our Nature World!
What ISO and shutterspeed is this? plz.
I love the way the snow and the stars shine like diamonds.
2:52 Shooting Star
+Jared Comeau And another one at 3:37
This is incredible, Ronn! I'm proud to know you!
See this is when your partner should've said "Put the camera down and let it watch for 30-40 minutes
"I know I spent $2500 on the best low light camera and a f/1.4 lens, and I need to take these pictures to make a living, but I think I'll not photograph this." - said no photographer ever
Divinely beautiful - visual poetry-in-motion! I've never been lucky enough to see the celestial drapes, so this treasure of a video will fill that gap for now, thank-you so much!
I wonder what the ancient Inuit tribes thought these were?
Mayeur000Donz Nothing is weird if it's not rare. What do you think the sun or the clouds or the rain you just saw were? They don't think about it. It's always been this way for them. The lights are peculiar to ancient Inuits no more than the rain is peculiar to you.

I just figured most cultures had stories to explain certain natural phenomena, like Christians thought Rainbows were God's way of apologizing for the Flood, or something.
Or some ancient peoples thought the Sun and Moon were gods that chased one another.
Mayeur000Donz Google "fifteen-native-tales-about-the-northern-lights"

'Sounds like they were pretty indecisive, then. :~P
cokewentflat you’re absolutely wrong.
And caught a shooting star. Absolutely stunning video!
Just wanted to say thank you very much for this. 👍 I greatly appreciate your team forging ahead through sickness and all.
Thank you kindly for the feedback. Much appreciate the encouragement and you taking the time to comment and read through the description. :-)
Ok how do you stop watching amazing footage! Thank you for uploading!
What an amazing video! What a sight to see. I can only imagine how beautiful it is to see this in real life.
It looks edited and so surreal but you realize that it actually IS a natural phenomena... That's how amazing this world is, just the way it was naturally made
Simply amazing and stunning videography. Thanks for posting~
Phenomenal, especially for anyone wants to know how it is to experience this. Thanks for capturing and sharing, awesome!
Ronn this is wonderful, thanks for sharing!

Very beautiful. A remarkable act of nature captured nicely on 4k. Keep up the good work!
thank you for this Aurora Chasers and team
I seen the Northern Lights many years ago and loved to see it in REAL TIME finally on video it has happened!
I would just like to say thank you so much for going out in the cold to film this. Thanks to all the special effects you see on tv, I've always thought the northern lights came and went like a flash. To see them flow through the air and ripple like that was breathtaking and inspiring.
Thanks so much. Tired of trying to imagine the time lapse ones in real time. Good to see it in real time with such clarity.
