Just started listening to Fred Dibnahs Biography... apparently he used to fret that all the really interesting stuff from his TV programmes ended up on the cutting room floor...
This is a good example of that..
Fortunately his Producer - who wrote the book - is still compiling it all for the more technically minded to enjoy soon!

Guy is a National Treasure. As a 2 wheel racing fan, I first heard him interviewed after an IoM race. He was speaking so fast and using race jargon with his wild accent. I understood Nothing. So I played each interview back until I understood... It takes a special type to risk life and limb in pursuit of speed. Guy is the perfect individual to tell these WW2 stories.

      Ha, snap!
I stumbled over the TT3D documentary and found Guy that way. Proceeded to watch everything he's made and even read his books.
It also led me to the TT, and I've now watched so much Irish Road Racing that l can understand almost all that's said, as well as Lincolnshire/Northern accents much better. Like you said, you can teach yourself, but man.. when l started it doesn't even sound like English. 😄

My late grandfather worked on Rolls Royce Merlin engines in Spitfires for training aircraft. He could single handedly tear down an entire engine and rebuild it. He made special test equipment to verify the operation of turbo chargers in the higher altitudes.

Guy seems to me that he ain't bothered by the fame he just uses it to learn stuff and do the things he's got a real interest in, definitely would be exactly the same off camera standing around with a brew just chatting, plus all that road racing makes him a legend with massive balls

The pilot who chopped of the tail of the Dornier Bomber his Hurricane crashed in to a street in London. About 20 years ago the street , crash site was dug up and some of the remains where found about 20 feet down and reunited with the pilot they I think found the control panel and joy stick. It has been featured on You Tube.

Went for my first date with my wife in the Orchard; Ruislip. I was 19, as I went to get served I was asked for ID, I produced my RAF f1250 iD and the guy said “sorry Sir, what do you want, anything for the buys in blue”. I left the bar with a balance of pride and embarrassment for being called out. The Orchard still stands and is now a beefeater restaurant, but in the bar they display the polish squadrons insignia.

ayy, he is from the north east of Britain, Grimsby. My Mum was born about 100km to the East in Birmingham, and he has a much broader accent than the Birmingham/Brummy accent. (She had an Anderson Shelter in her back yard during the War). It kinda adds to the tale I think..

I would have thought that brave pilot James Nicholson would be ghastly burned and scarred for life.
But on the photo that I found, his face is normal and he looks quite happy.
He must have had terrible burn scars on his hands, though.
If you ever watch the movie, "The Battle of Britain (1969)," it's an OK movie, not great. But the aerial sequences are superb.
In one scene, a WAAF member is introduced to a pilot who survived his Hurricane being on fire.
You'll probably think, 'they had some decent prosthetics to give him such a... look.'
Those weren't prosthetics. They actually had an old Battle of Britain veteran who was horribly burnt, act as himself, almost 30 years after the battle.

I can't imagine anyone better for 'the boat that guy built' and 'how Britain worked'.
For a more 'traditional' format, such as this, he's probably not the best

    • @MarkDaleADV
      @MarkDaleADV 3 роки тому +5

Yes, he's an anti-personality, a down to earth bloke, and this could be possibly why people like him? I hold him in the highest regard. If you can bear it, it might be good to do a bit more watching to find out who he really is, read his books, understand, and appreciate his exploits. Like another commentator noted, there is no better person to recount these events, I bet the young pilots would approve.
