We're supposed to hear the guillotine blade each time after a nun exits the stage. THAT is the emotional impact of the most upsetting ending of any opera. They aren't shot with a gun... The way it was composed will hit you harder than anything any opera will do. Seek out the correct way and it'll break your heart.
These were a group of nuns who offered themselves as victim martyrs to God in hopes of bringing peace between Church and state during the reign of terror in France. The reign of terror was conquered 10 days after their sacrifice.
@@raphmaninoff Do you have any sources for this? Because the sources I once found mentioned nothing about them being murdered because of their religion but because of the political affiliation with the king they choose to not betray. One of those sources was a tour-guide in the city of Compiègne, where this convent was. I mean, sure... he was just a local historian I met in real life while you are a random anon on the internet. Surely your opinion carries more weight. I expect your reading skills allow you to recognise the obvious sarcasm in that last line, but since this IS the internet and you ARE a random anon, I should not make any assumptions about your intellect so I give you the benefit of doubt. And as I do with any random anon in the internet, I doubt your intellectual capacity. The person I commented to clearly identifies as catholic and religious people are notorious for being outrageous liars. EVERY single religious person has a delusional personality disorder so they can't be trusted on their word alone with anything they say. So, once again: do you have sources for your claim?

The first time I saw this scene was the following. And I think is still the best performance, for musical choices and for the stage. I hope you can enjoy it: ua-cam.com/video/I826kvTdgIY/v-deo.html
What on earth is possibly ridiculous with this production/scene? I think they took the music and the story very seriously and found a beautiful image for this gruesome act. Who wants to see a guillotine falling down? THAT would be ridiculous. Them literally walking as white angels into the dark is much more powerful. Before bashing every recent take on opera, you should foremost respect the work and passion that visibly went into this.
C' est la première fois ye vis cette musique. Je suis impressionée. Super!
Without knowing the story, my tears just fall constantly.

¡Grandiosa! ¡Gracias por compartir!
Hermosa puesta de una escena espeluznante.
Bello.

These are the sound of guillotine blade (I was there working on the production)
Best performance I've seen so far was done in La Scala in Milan in 1999.
Too bad that video has been removed because of copyrights.

Very moving.
Nice video! Keep it up!
Even an atheist might shed a tear or two.
_Especially_ an atheist.
The futility of it all.
This production suppresses the townsfolk. We don't see them and just barely hear them off-stage singing the music Poulenc wrote for them.
la mort de la prieure n'est pas forcement une mort très chrétienne...mais le sacrifice de Blanche de la Force rachète la mort de la prieure....
Je suis curieuse: pourquoi dites-vous cela? En quoi la mort de la prieurse est-elle différente? Merci.
