Asked why she hadn't sent her two daughters to Canada in the war Queen Elizabeth answered:

The quote, I think actually ends simply "and the king will never leave" which is so poignant. Hitler was reputed to have called the Queen Mother "the most dangerous woman in Europe" for a reason!

So Churchill, lacking any significant support in his own party and essentially isolated, received unlimited blank-cheque backing from the Head of State.... thereby empowering him, and giving him the confidence, to beat-down his own party. Thereby history is made (at least in this movie version).

War was coming because of geopolitical interests, and the normal people had to swallow the bullshit their politicians decided and had to accept that their sons will die in a useless war on top of it. @@O.G.H. The English people believed it was an act of heroic resistance. They looked to King George VI to act as a voice of the people. Which is the main duty of the monarch in modern British society. The Monarch of Britain has been reduced to a mere figurehead. They do not have much political power and god help the monarch who tries to exercise what powers they do technically have. In their role as a figurhead, they are both everything and nothing. The main duty of the reigning monarch is to act as the voice of the people. Its why King George VI was one of the United Kingdoms most popular monarchs. For Britain, World War II was not just another petty squabble over territory or resources. It was a fight for national survival. After the fall of France, it took on an even larger meaning. It was a fight for the survival of democracy in Europe. Sure, you can point to all the terrible acts performed by all sides. There is not a single country that came out of the war with its hands clean. But you cannot look at what the British people as a whole went through, the resolve to continue the fight, you cannot look at it and say there was nothing heroic about it. Churchill was right about one thing. It was their finest hour.

Ben did amazing as King in this movie. Throughout the movie, when the King speaks he usually always had short pauses. In this scene, it’s the only scene where the dialogue between him and Winston was fast dialogue because at this point the King already knew what Winston was actually wanting, actually feeling. And he accepted that at this point in the movie, whereas all the other times he spoke to Mr. Churchill, he couldn’t believe how upfront the man was, this caused the King to stutter, pause, think. But these first meeting beforehand caused the King to be more open-minded, which we saw in the scene prior to going over to Winston’s suite, when he was on the balcony, looking over London, realizing what GB was to become had Hitlers reign prevailed, it was in that moment he knew the ONLY man who could lead the people in a fight m was Sir Winston Churchill. This was brilliantly directed and such an important part of the climax in this movie.

The words spoken here: Do we know that was the conversation, especially the part of going to the people and telling them the truth unvarnished? A great scene for the King. You could tell he was afraid and willing to fight to the last. If memory serves, he did not evacuate London during the blitz as a show of solidarity with his people. Such backbone is sorely needed by a King or Queen.

The two most powerful men in the country, a country which is the last flame of freedom and liberty in Europe - Sitting in a drab room discussing events that will change world history forever. Knowing they require one another, to lead the nation out of its darkest hour and send a message of hope to Europe - They CAN be beaten.

Well, if we're speaking about technicalities, then exactly this didn't happen, but then again, Churchill's speech also sounded very different irl. But King George really didn't like Churchill that much, and hated the fact that he had to accept him as new prime minister, and after one of their private meetings, which they had every week, all of his disdain disappeared. Couple of months later, they were close friends. Details are for us to imagine, after all they're private life.

arguable the best acting in the whole film. I know Gary Oldman is the greatest living actor (can do everything from a Chechen terrorist hijacker to Winston Churchill perfectly and every accent in the world) and I was saying that 15 years before it was trendy to say so.... but by god there are some phenomenal Australian actors. Ben Mendelsohn is out of this world here. I remember seeing this film in central London in a dark cinema only 2 miles from Westminster and the atmosphere in this scene was electric. Speaking of Aussies and WW2 films another equally magnificent Australian actor is Noah Taylor who played the young Adolf Hitler with an understanding and depth of psychology that was terrifyingly brilliant.
