  • Ive been wanting a Top handled Stihl chainsaw for a long time. I finally decided to buy one, but had an extremely hard time deciding between the 193T or the 201T. In todays video I discuss which I chose to go with and why.
    I also came really close to buying this Top Handled Battery Operated Makita Saw. Thing looks Mean!

    I am a certified tree surgeon, retired from LADWP, and after 42 years of doing tree work, I can say confidently that keeping your Stihl's stock, and using them as intended (designed), is the better way to go. In my first 10 - 12 years as a tree surgeon, I did modify saws, and chains, and it just caused problems, and accidents... As it is in the military, and in government, it is true in life: KISS: keep it simple, stupid. As I get older, I tell myself this all the time, just as I did when I was younger, and I am even more appreciative of this motto, now! Thanks for the video, brother! Keep safe, always, because safety, that is job #1!!

    I just purchased the 194T and love it. Used to run a 200T which was a strong saw but tired. Great vid and key points. Price was the deciding point for me. I only climb for friends and family now. No longer a full time arborist.

      Just looked at sthils website, looks like they replaced the 193T with the 194t. The 194T has the M-Tronic Carb. I guess there is no way around the electronics in the future unfortunately.

    The most used saw I have in my inventory is a top handle Stihl 015. By the way, it does not have a clutch brake. In fact none of my saws have brakes. The reason why is because they are all Stihl and purchased new many a moon ago. Granted I do not use them as much as I once did but they were well used when I heated a 2600 sq ft home with wood. I also took very good care of them. I cleaned them up after every use. Even if I was going out the next day and use them.

      I can only hope that my saw will last just as long. There is a lot of plastic built into my saw, but in some ways that makes it advantageous because its so light weight. Time will tell, but I definitely share your compassion for your saws as I am the same way. I think its called Pride. After every use, I clean the saw spotless, top off the fuel and oil, and adjust/sharpen the chain as needed. Love Stihl and I will be a life customer

    Greetings from germany -nice Video. I bought the 194 t .....very nice chainsaw for all: house,Garden, fire wood, an you can Do with that also little trees, last not perfect, but it works when you Don t wanna buy more than one. (IT all Costs lot of money and cannot buy 3 chainsaws) .....The Quality is also very good....and it costs 550 euros....with gasoline, oil etc i was over 600 euros (should be almost be same in US Dollar) .....i think the bit bigger one for 300 euros more isn t worth.......
    It s a lot of money, and i think: even the cheapest Stihl you can get here for 200 euros, is a very good high Quality chainsaw...... 😊👍

    I think you made the right buy. You can buy two for the price of the 201T. The 201T with the auto tune feature is kind of gimmicky. Out in the field I think most people want the simplicity of being able to tune their own saw. You can mod your 193T to scream a little more with a muffler mod and a ported and polished cyl/piston, but it really isn't necessary.

      I agree, I absolutely love this saw. Its preformed flawlessly. Its light, and easy to handle. Sure its a little slow when cutting through larger rounds, but it handles everything I throw at it. I actually just ordered a new ms261 today. I was surprised to hear that they still make the 261 with or without the "m-tronic" carb. Of course I ordered the basic carb. I will do a video when it comes in

    You made a good choice, the 201tcm has been ruined by the m tronic carb, lots of stalling out and hot start problems. Stihl does not seem to care either.

    I do tree work professionally and I have 2 pro saws. A ms261 and a ms461(all reg carb). My boss has a ms201t-cm and it’s a pain. It runs amazing when it runs. About 3 times a year we get problems with the for hot start and bogging issues. I’m currently looking at the ms194t myself to add to my fleet. I will say when you decide to get a firewood saw get a ms261. It is 100% worth it over the 271/291. It’s 2lbs lighter and had more power.

    I would not like the top handle saw. I bought a used Stihl MS180C because of the no-tool chain tensioner and it's a good small in between for light and even heavier loads I need around the yard. I cut up a 30" fallen tree with it and it's great for trimming.

      Nice! Everyone has their needs and knows what works best for them. This saw has been perfect for me thus far. I have a lot of rope access tree work to do on the property and this is the saw for it. I would like to get a larger firewood saw one day, but thats down the road a bit.

    I just bought stihl 194t cause someone walked away with my 20 year old echo cs341 (white case) I like the top handle to cut small fire wood in my backyard and I don't know why everyone saying is for professional tree climber only? I also have an old echo cs305 and the new stihl ms170 Is not as fast cutting on my top handle saw. I used only 50:1 premixed on all my chainsaw and weed wacker cause gas in Cali sucks with ethanol.

    • @OldSoulMillennial
      @OldSoulMillennial  4 роки тому

      This is a professional chainsaw because the handle for the saw is on top. As where every other saw has a handle in the rear, allowing for more control of the saw. A top handle saw is much more dangerous because if the saw kick backs hard, (because the handle is on top) there is much less control in trying to control the kick back.

    A dumb question: Can the computer carbs be replaced with "dumb" ones? After warranty of course.

    • @OldSoulMillennial
      @OldSoulMillennial  2 роки тому

      Good question. I don't know. I would say that stihl will likely make that impossible because stihl wants you to go to the dealer for service.
      Then again, there may be some knock off Chinese company that reverse engineers the carb, and makes an aftermarket "dumb" carb. I could see that happening.

    Have you noticed the saw leaking a tiny bit of sawdust past the air filter ? I've noticed all of these top handles filters lack a rubber seal.

    201tC has TWICE the torque. You can’t run a 16” on a 193. 193 is a pruning saw. Pruning has less profit. If you do removals you’ll realize at some point the 193 is a Mickey Mouse saw. Size to weight means nothing. Yep it’s smaller, yep it’s slower.

    "If you're a Stihl-guy"....THIS is such a problem, keeping-alive this silly brand-loyalty where you'll seriously entertain a 201t when Echo makes a comparable (355t) for half the price, some would say it's superior (disclosure- I recently bought&returned a 194t, then used that same $ on the 355t) out of the box although IF you're going to be porting it then I guess the 201t allows a bit more power.[noted- you have a Redmax blower right there, so can see you personally are not brand-blinded, or not fully at least ;D ]
    "The 193 OR the 201t"....you talk of price, and power/weight, differences and you ask "is it worth it?" - whole video is basically a comparison of "which is better?", or "which is better-for-the-money?", I'd argue this is a false-premise. It's easier to see the mistake if you said "the the 201[rear handled], or the 201T[op handled]", because obviously you're then saying "which is better, the top-handle or rear-handle?", to which the obvious answer is "neither, it depends on the situation"....it's obvious when talking about rear-handles versus top-handles, or a chainsaw-versus-hedgers, but it IS still the comparison you're making---you're comparing a "large-class" climb saw, the 201 which is meant for pushing a 16" bar, to a middle-class chainsaw....surely you're aware of their 150t offering as well? All 3 are "what you'd expect from Stihl", none are "better/worse"* by any significant margin, you simply choose which bar-length(ie power-requirement) you need and then pony-up whatever stihl is asking ;)
    (*= this is ignoring the intelligent carb stuff, that's a fair-enough complaint IMO I mean I'd shy away on-principle, I wanna control my carb not "see how the chip goes" especially since I mod all my saws and I've no idea how they respond but DO know I've seen what you've mentioned IE people who loved the 200t are disliking the changes seen with the 201t's introduction[or its existence, thing is wayyyyy past introduction at this point it is years-old], gotta say I'm surprised to see Stihl not be more aggressive in their top-handle segment they are gonna get rolled by Echo, the 193/194t platform is ~$350, you could go to echo - and try for 7d and still return if-desired - the 201t-comparable unit(355t), or you could get a FAR superior unit to your 193t, the Echo 2511t, for just $50 more. It is over 2lbs lighter and comparable horsepower, basically the 193's kick in a 150t's package/form-factor!)
    I see lots of oil but no motomix...are you using pump-fuel? Did you ever catch Steve('s Small Engine Saloon) video on here "truth of gas station fuels"? Ethanol-free (the way I went for a while) isn't enough, ethanol is 1-of-3 categories in pump-fuel you wanna keep out of your carb/small-engine and it's not even the worst class(the polyolefins are, they cause the gumming/varnishing worse-than ethanol) Canned-fuels only for me, TruFuel's MSDS shows it is very solid for the $$, Motomix is definitely the best followed by Husqvarna but you really pay out the nose for that stuff, the echo red armor and trufuel are the 'best value' ones and all I use :)
    I hope none of my post reads-as-rude, tone is difficult, especially w/ what I'm about to add...I've gotta say this feels a bit more like a self-reassurance thing, singing the praises of the 193t in 2020 (am curious why you didn't get the 194t? Same MSRP..), I mean don't get me wrong I got a 194t about 5wks ago and they are sexy, awesome machines, no question about that, but jesus the buyers'-remorse when I realized what a dollar gets you w/stihl versus w/echo I was floored and began seeking a buyer for my new 194t, ready to take a $50 loss on a brand-new unit so I could swap to Echo (thankfully, when inquiring about Stihl's warranty-transfer policy, they reached-out to me to ask why I cared, as the model was literally just-registered, so I told them I bought/couldn't return w/o a 35% re-stock, the Stihl rep called the retailer and forced them, so am very thankful to Stihl in that regard although again if it were Echo they *invite* you to use their gear for 7d and return if unliked, so am trying not to feel too-bad about the 'hassle' I caused in buying-then-returning my 194t!)
    Be safe out there & keep the vids coming, gonna go peruse your channel(home w/ bad-back today :/ ), very cool to hear you work for city am on the verge of applying myself (am a contract/freelance climber and most of the local companies in my area that use freelancers are shady, shitty companies, need to get "more legit" haha!!

    • @cerberusbonsaiarboricultur774
      @cerberusbonsaiarboricultur774 4 роки тому

      Something I wanted to add- I think Stihl's bars&chains superiority furthers this idea of stihl being "competitive"* in any value-sense, I still don't get why oregon/echo/husqy aren't putting-out more-aggressive-teeth, 0.043 gauged and 1/4" pitch gear like so many Stihl saws come with from-factory (it's a weird liability thing, for instance the echo2511t in europe *does* come w/ 0.043"//1/4"pitch but the US has standard oregon-type 0.05//3/8LP, so they're not blind to it but I couldn't tell you why they aren't selling 2511's like that in the US, hell there's multiple guys on the arborist forums who offer 2511 kits so you can 'go euro' with the 1/4" pitch setup!)
      (*= Stihl products, IME, are quality, I do not dislike their hardware for the most part[though the air-filter and air-box on the 193/194t platform is abysmal IMO], they are just far-removed from VALUE. If you wanna get a super-high-quality powerhead for a 16", the 540xp by husqvarna is a far nicer piece of machinery than the 201t, a far better use of ~$700...the 201t and 355t are both ~2HP, 8lbs machines, incredibly comparable, the 540xp is like 2.4HP and nearly 1lbs heavier, just a 'king saw' for big-climb-saws, and worth the $$....the 201t has no place IMO, you get a 540xp if the 355t isn't enough for you although I've yet to find any negative anecdotes on the 355t, even its predecessors the 330t&360t(33cc&36cc, respectively) were loved by almost all who'd used them and the 355t just comes-in at 20% stronger than a 360t, and lighter, and more features...if it were still $500MSRP it wouldn't have changed my mind on the purchase, with it being $350MSRP it blows my mind that stihl can move *any* 201t's...)
      ^And that's the 'king/large-class' climbing-saw world, for mid-range (your 193/194's), husqvarna's t430 is IMO a bit pricier than it should be but a truly superior unit , but once-again Echo...their 271t is price-pointing with your 193/194t but is *lighter* and *stronger*! Honestly, if not going lithium *and* not needing to push a 16" bar, it's getting harder for anyone to make an objective argument against the $399 echo-2511t, the lightest top-handle on earth with more-power than the lil Stihl units, the 2511 is actually the only one of echo's top-handles they call 'pro class' although I couldn't tell you what *isn't* pro on my 355t :P www.echo-usa.com/getattachment/9aa4764b-fa71-48fa-b4cf-03a05f65f123/Chain-Saws
