- We had six fine days last August staying in Fort William and re-visiting some places we had not been back to for many years. I felt quite sad the day we had to leave as we drove through Glen Coe to our overnight stop near Stirling, stopping near Loch Tulla for lunch with a last view of the mountains as we left. Little did I know back then it was the last time I would ever be there again with my husband who enjoyed visiting Scotland as much as me.
Later that afternoon we arrived near Stirling so decided to visit The Dunmore Pineapple as we had not been back there for many years. The road sign to the building said “private” so we took the next right turn and soon we came across a tourist who confirmed that we were on the right track. Not much further along we came across the small National Trust car park. Through the gates we entered a large Walled Garden and on the right a large grass area with a steep slope up to The Pineapple. Easy to see why it was given that name with a beautiful carved stone pineapple on the top. I have put the brief details about it in my video that I took from the information board inside the porch. The inside is not open to the public and the entrance at the back was for two holiday lets. Another visitor there had been to look and told us there are only a few fruit trees. Dunmore House has long been in ruins but I believe can be visited at … your own risk!

Brief history of Dunmore Pineapple in the Walled Garden
Dunmore Park, the ancestral home of the Earls of Dunmore, includes a large country mansion called Dunmore House and the grounds contain among other things two large walled gardens. Walled gardens were a necessity in a northern garden in the eighteenth and nineteenth century as high walls of stone or brick sheltered the garden from wind and frost and could raise the temperature several degrees for growing of fruits, vegetables also ornamental plants. A hothouse was built into this walled garden in 1761 by John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore. The hothouse, located in the ground floor of the building, was used for growing pineapples. The smoke from the furnace was expelled through four chimneys, cleverly disguised as urns.
Murray left Scotland after the initial structure had been built and went on to become the last Colonial Governor of Virginia in America. The upper-floor or summerhouse with its pineapple dome-shaped roof and the lower-floor entrance on the south side were added after Murray’s return from Virginia.
The building is a mixture of architectural styles and there is no clear evidence that the archway and the pineapple were built at the same time, or even designed by the same architect. Others suggest that the pineapple was constructed after Murray's return from America in 1776. The carved stone pineapple, which is situated between the two bothies, forms an elaborate dome on top of an octagonal pavilion, with sash windows topped with Gothic arches on seven sides.
The stonemason's craft is a remarkably accurate depiction of a pineapple. Each of the curving stone leaves is separately drained to prevent frost damage, and the stiff serrated edges of the lowest and topmost leaves and the plum berry-like fruits are all graded so that water cannot accumulate anywhere, ensuring that frozen trapped water cannot damage the delicate stonework. The identity of the designer of the folly is uncertain, but it is often cannot damage the delicate stonework. So pleased you liked the video Mircea. It was sad leaving Scotland but our stopping off in Falkirk gave us chance to see The Pineapple again. Iteh stone carving is as good as it was all those years ago but to fine the way in as the entrance we last took now had "Private" on the road as that is the way now to the holiday lets. Thank you so much for your comments. It is an unusual building and must have been wonderful to see when the old hall was lived in. When I first went to visit , many years back, it was easy to find but since two hoiday lets were put in the original sign now say it is a private entranc. We took the next one and found that one did take us there. The Pinapple dome looked as good as it did all those years ago. Many thanks Don. It was sad leaving Scotland as I do not think I will get back as it is a long drive on my own. As for the Pineapple. We went there many years ago and it was easier to find then and the walled garden had more plants in the borders. The carved stone was juts as beautiful but I think that having put in two holiday lets since we last went ... about 15 years ago ... has made it difficult to find and the real entrance now says "Private" because of the holiday lets so we just took the next turn on the right and were lucky to arrive at their small car park. The following day we went to the Preston Mill on our way home. We wanted to see it as it had also been a long time since we went there. Very nice to visit if you haven't been and not too far from you. I would have liked more time and a warmer day to cross the bridge to the field that has the doocot in it and then walk back by the river. Have a happy day Don and hope you have great weekend. Thanks Don for this message. I had not thought about bus tours and it is something I might like as I have seen the adverts and they look quite nice.. Worth thinking about if my urge to get back to Scotland gets strong 👍 Very wet here today and I have a problem in the garden. A Mole! They have not been for 2 years and today a large mole hill appeared in the back lawn. I had to sent off for another lot of deterrent called "Defenders" granules last week and expect them today. We visited this Pineapple many years ago and it was just as good last year as then. The stone dome is beautifully carved and clear to all that it is like a Pineapple. I agree, it would be expensive to build today and it is great that this and other lovely buildings are being looked after by National Trusts and other organisations so we can see them today and in the future. Now I am on my own, I may not visit beautiful Scotland again. I loved that holiday and so happy we managed to see the Pineapple and the Water Mill before returning home. Thank you Tomotugu. The heat in many parts of Europe is very worrying. I am not one to like it very hot and our summer has gone for now. We have rain just now but need it. I hope the sun comes back soon but not hot like in June.
I love visiting Scotland as it has so many different areas. We pass over the border from England to the gentle hills in south Scotland or to the gentle rolling mountains in the south west in Dumfriesshire. It all seems more open up there and fresher, even in the two larger cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. However I really like the Highlands best of all and even further north where the mountains in the north west are so beautiful. Now I am on my own I do not think I will get up there again but I have many videos of holidays up there and happy memories of our times together.

Thank you FF. It is hard looking back in those videos and I will always have happy memories of out time there. I do not think I will get back up there. I do drive but on my own it is a long journey. Only a few more videos to edit that I am trying to tackle. One still in Scotland as we were on the way home and we had a weekend in Northumberland in October so I think I have three videos to edit that I took there. How are you with selling? At our end no interest whatsoever. Recently I am finding it difficult to stay positive and feel we are never getting out of here. Mind you, if/when we do we seem to have become bogged down as to what our next step is going to be. Life is not easy at times. One day at a time Julie 🧡

Wow, dear Julie what an admirable building with the pineapple so beautifully made. I also liked the flowers very much and you had also filmed a bumblebee very nicely. And what a wonderful memory herewith of this beautiful trip. It was really super beautiful again where you took me virtually. What you wrote both in the description and in the video was also interesting to read. but gewis also the mountains at the start video I found a beautiful view. It also struck me as very magical when I saw them. Truly a breathtakingly beautiful valley surrounded by those imposing mountains. Believe I know through a documentary I saw once that this was also a filming location for a James Bond movie and a couple of Harry Potter movies, among others. I can also very well imagine the sadness you felt driving through here. I also still have it when I visit places I was once with my husband. But I also know and feel it when he is near me anyway. Scotland. When we watched the James Bond film on TV I knew I had seen those view but could not remember so it was worth visiting Glen Etive again to see the spot that was take there. Further north west it is even lovelier but I, back then, I did not take any video, just photos and it is sad that we had plans to get there again in a year so I could have some videos of that area. I do drive but I have not driven on my own for many years, only to the large stores for my weekly shop. Just now, I cannot imagine going to visit places on my own but I should try. Thank you for viewing Geoff. Also, I waited until you came to view my latest video to thank you for the kind words you sent me on losing my husband. There was many times in the first few weeks I thought it was all a bad dream and if someone told me something interesting I would think, "I must tell him about that" but then realise I never can. My hubby, being an accountant before he retired looked after that side of our life but now I have to take it all on as I live on my own and manage everything now. He left everything in order and a will but as he died so suddenly things were on hold and it has been awful understanding everything. I have got close family but one lives down south and in the other in the mid-lands so they have taken it in turns to come up some weekends and help me understand it all. I do not have as much time on UA-cam as I did. We shared most things but after my back operation 3-4 year ago, I didn't help as much in the garden. Now I am trying to look after it but I do have a chap to cut the lawns so that helps. I do drive but I only used to drive to the supermarkets and back and got lazy when it came to taking my turn to drive when on holiday. I do not know if I will pluck up enough courage to visit places even quite near me and I feel the car is too big for me on my own so I just put those thoughts to the back of my mind for now. I still have videos to put on my channel so take my time with the editing. I thought I would not get back to the ones I had as it was upsetting editing them as after Scotland we had a long week end in Northumberland so I am editing them when I have time.

However, the walled garden borders were not planted out that well but I think the pandemic lost them many visitors as it is not easy to find as it was the first time I saw it. I was so happy to see that bee. I had not seen many bees of butterflies in Scotland or at home last summer. I have not seen many this summer either. One bee today when I went to look at some flowers in our back border and a white butterfly keeps going around the garden these last few days but will not stop for a photograph!! I am so pleased you are getting work back after the pandemic. Are you out of the country most time now? Nice to be back to what you enjoy. Have a great time, wherever you are. Hello again Julie.Always a pleasure watching uour uploads, and an even bigger pleasure reading all of your wonderful comments over the years. I do hope that somehow you are managing to cope with everything. All of it has been a great shock to you and no doubt extremely stressful in more ways than one. Don't worry about putting off your video uploads and editing at the moment if you are not quite ready. I have so many in my archives but at the moment with the music work coming in I have been finding it difficult during the summer months to work on the editing part mainly. I'm actually in the country most of the time, sometimes working in Eastbourne at one of the large hotels as a solo performer, get a lot of people who visit quite regularly from Yorkshire and Lancashire etc. I now get to remember their names. I also do a few spots at the local Bandstand during the week days, if it's sunny it's really lovely, but we seem to have had quite a few cloudy overcast days which loses a lot of athmosphere. Also trying a few care homes which helps a bit, I have a big collection of rather large puppets which I bring to the people during my vocal breaks. Who knows, there could be a possibility that an agent might send me up to yorkshire sometime in the future, I ve worked briefly at the Blackpool winter gardens ships bar many many years ago, but only for a short time, very enjoyable all the same.

Thank you Pier. We went year ago but managed this visit staying one night in Falkirk before making our way home the next day. I do not think the walled garden is as well looked after as I remember and the two holiday lets were not there back then but the Pineapple is worth seeing ... if you are anywhere near it. The original way in now goes to the holiday lets and a "private" sign there now so we took the next road and saw someone who told us it was the way to the car park. Enjoy he rest of the weekend. The dome is really well carved and I am sure more would visit if the way in was more inviting as it is not a real road and would have been bad on a wet day. Have a pleasant day. Driving would be very dangerous for me. I would look too often at this wonderful landscape and no longer at the road. So it was better to ride with you in the passenger seat.
The pineapple looks great. However, it is no longer edible as old as it is 😂
