  • Honey, I shrunk the satellites! Mini-satellites are following in the footsteps of cell phones and computers. CubeSats are small but highly capable of performing a variety of space missions. For more about our CubeSats, visit www.jpl.nasa.go...

It's kind of sad these days how people need loud music and flashy lights to keep their attention while watching a video on engineering. TBH I would be completely satisfied with a few cutaways, some diagrams, and footage of the thing in action.

They missed out on a very critical naming opportunity. At 1:13 they start talking about mars cube one (marco) but they were sending 2 to mars. Why couldn't they name one marco and the other polo? or are they saving that joke for when they send one of these cubes to Pluto "Pluto One Low Orbit" or somthing.

I'm quite impressed that we're sending cubesats interplanetary, and for such a specialised task as a relay just for EDL, it's a great low-cost solution
I'm just surprised InSight even needs dedicated relay satellites. I would've thought the MRO or Mars Odyssey would've sufficed as relay satellites

I wonder if SpaceX Starlink constellation will consist of cubesats or full grown satellites? With the constellation being 12.000 satellites I'd be surprised if they weren't cubesats. If I'm not mistaken, the two prototypes they launched some time ago weren't cubesats but they weren't "big" satellites either.
Edit: they were called "microsats", launched in space on the SpaceX PAZ launch early 2018.

+Kevin H Yeah, as far as design implementation / space and weight, goes it's one of the best ideas in the last decade when it comes to satellites. Add to that the fact that universities can apply or buy space to launch these and it's beyond awesome. There are kids today that have launched such cubesats. Back in my day that was unheard of.

watching this really makes me wonder: are todays cubesats the precursors to swarms that could, for example, be used to colonize a new planet (i.e. a small payload which deploys into a robotics factory, which deploys into a "terraformer"/factory, along with a swarm of droids to operate/maintain it), obeservation/science swarms, etc.?
i would like to hear if this is something that is actually being considered within the scientific community and if not, would someone be so kind as to introduce the idea at least?

I also wonder how thoroughly they burn in the atmosphere. How much of it is going to make it on to the ground and how that junk/trash is going affect the environment.

built around a CPU.. NOT that great.. They obviously have heating issues.. why square? in a clutter and bouncing? sorry I like my sphere.. they can fold out and bounce off other objects.. They can keep there Walmart style sats.. I'll take the REI version.. you can grow your own fuel.. collect salvage to 3d print a rockets.. it actually very easy to run a junk yard and make money building rockets to launch into space.. SO STOP BUILDING ON TOP OF LAND FILLS.. That's rocket ships material..
