I was shocked and saddened to learn of the destruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on the morning of March 26th. The story is still developing at this time, but my heart goes out to all affected by this disaster.
I live near the key bridge and there were people saying it felt like an earthquake. It's honestly scary to know that it could've been you on the bridge.
As a Maryland resident who hasn’t been on the Francis Scott Key Bridge once a single time in life, I can’t believe that a large cargo ship hit the bridge.
That Korean market on the west side used to sell delicious kimchi. Interesting information about MD 702 is that this road was supposed to be the alignment for I-695, but it was changed due to the usual outlash by local communities. Also, yes, MD 695 was part of the old alignment before the Key bridge was built. Once the bridge was built, most of MD 695 was resigned as I-695, with the rest of the road remaining as MD 695
Don’t know if they still do it, but in the spring, they used to put a star spangled buoy in the water just north of the key bridge to show the location of the anchored British ship where Francis Scott Key penned the star spangled banner.
Sequential exit numbers are a good idea for such a perfectly circular beltway since milemarker-based ones would have to either repeat or count backwards.
Hey Todd - Really Like the videos. One thing I saw was when I-97 splits from I-695 with a left exit (Exit 4 18:13) - The top of the sign which shows "Exit 4" should be aligned to the left of the main sign to be technically "interstate compliant." I only learned this about 7 years ago, and I'm almost 60. Maybe it's a state thing, but that's how it is in the west.
My sister almost drove the entire Capital Beltway once, though not on purpose. Coming out of Springfield, she had a choice of 495N, 395N and 95N, and chose the worst option to get to 66. She probably drove 80-90% of the way around.
Whenever I hear someone mention the Key Bridge, I immediately think of the bridge that connects Rosslyn, VA with Georgetown in Washington DC over the Potomac River. The Baltimore counterpart has a much more majestic view though.
I-695 looks like a cool beltway to drive, that Key Bridge especially, barring the tolls. I hope in that in my home state of Louisiana in the Shreveport-Bossier City area they complete the I-220/LA-3132 loop around the two cities so that I can drive the full loop of it someday.
I should have requested Liberty Road... it got skipped twice 😭 Also, you mentioned 144 as the old route for US 40. That's true... but only west of Baltimore. East of Baltimore, the old alignment of US 40 is now MD 7.
Whenever Todd says "inner loop", it takes a moment for me to realize that he's not referring to the terrible expressway moat that used to surround downtown Rochester, NY. Here's hoping the remaining parts of the expressway will be removed soon.
I have a lot of history with both of the area's beltways. I used to live in Savage. Sometimes when I traveled home I would use 95 to 695 to 70 West...to Washington (PA). Back then, Route 32 was kind of convoluted in Howard County. I used the Dulaney Valley Road exit to take a CPA review class. To visit Gettysburg I could take 695 to 795 or 32. There used to be a Leedmark superstore in Glen Burnie but it has been gone for decades. Since I worked in DC I drove on 495 more often but 695 was easier to drive.
Thanks for watching! If you have any requests for casinos/points of interest on Las Vegas Boulevard, please make them today (Thursday). Requests for Florida's Turnpike are now closed as I'm finishing it up now. Thanks!
Baltimore and St. Louis have both a "city" and "county" portion. Carson City, NV and over 3 dozen Virginia cities are also separate from the counties that they are adjacent to.
@aaronholcomb237 You’re *almost* right regarding Carson City (I live 30 minutes north in Reno). What is now Carson City used to be Ormsby County, one of the original nine at statehood. In fact, every single Nevada county surrounding Carson City was an original county. The city and county were consolidated in the late 60’s because of population decline from the gold rush days (only 1500 big pre-war!). It may be labeled an “Independent City”, but it is much more akin to city-counties like Denver, New Orleans, Philadelphia or San Francisco…
First time I ever saw inner/outer loop was on Georgia 10 beltway/perimeter around Athens. (Unfortunately probably not a big enough road to do for, say, a Jayhawks - Dawgs matchup.) Social Security Administration is pretty close to Security Square/Security Blvd; took me awhile to figure that out but "Security" seemed like a weird name for a whole area without that background.
Honestly, if Maryland is going to be provincial with I-70 east, then at least sign it for Hagerstown. Major junction with 81 and basically a component city of the mini "urban" corridor along 81 from Winchester to Chambersburg.
Hagerstown is actually a good choice regardless. After that is where I’d start with Pittsburgh, but shared with Morgantown for 68. After 68, Pittsburgh shared with Harrisburg (I think there are restrictive tunnels in Pennsylvania that make 68 the only option for oversized vehicles).
I thought that 695 was signed relatively well, with only a few additions on my part. Left to right is clockwise, and the 0 mile mark is set at the Curtis Creek Drawbridge. Hawkins Point-Glen Burnie-Catonsville-Woodlawn-Pikesville-Towson-Middle River/Essex-Dundalk-Hawkins Point Perhaps my biggest additions come along the west side. I’m not really a fan of signing Towson all the way down in Anne Arundel County. I think there’s room for some more: Catonsville (U.S 40), Woodlawn (I 70) and Pikesville (I 795). My biggest problem with Owings Mills is that it isn’t physically on 695 like everything else I have listed. As for the east side, it’s almost perfect; my only addition is having Middle River share with Essex; they’re both comparable in size (in relation to the biggest suburbs on 695 not called Towson, Dundalk or Glen Burnie), and that interchange with MD 702 looks like it could serve both, seeing as it looks to be what separates them (it’s most evident when approaching in the clockwise direction)… You mentioning New York vs Philadelphia on 95 North and Frederick on 70 West helped solidify my thoughts on using certain metropolitan subdivision hubs as controls for primary Interstates. I say that it’s entirety dependent on the direction. For Frederick (a hub of the Washington MSA subregion centered on Frederick and Montgomery Counties), I say it should be 100% skipped when approaching from the east (whether 70 or 270). Westbound, it should be Hagerstown. Frederick makes A LOT more sense when approaching from the west (where a consequential split occurs for eastbound travelers) to where in this direction, it’s worth a conversation. Plus, I don’t even think there are any west to east transitions in Frederick (that’s what U.S. 29 is for). As for 95 North, I think the best choice may actually be Wilmington (a metropolitan subdivision of the Philadelphia MSA). 295 will take you through the Camden subdivision towards New York, while 95 serves Downtown Wilmington en route to Philadelphia. Southbound, however, I say skip Wilmington in favor of Baltimore (optional for 295, mandatory for 95). On the topic of The Wire (I’ve never seen, just know it does take place in Baltimore), I wouldn’t think that Baltimore Police and Maryland State Police would be on equal footing. One is statewide, and the other only has jurisdiction over a county-equivalent. Wouldn’t the reciprocal department (if the exact location on a bridge is this contentious) be the Sheriff’s Departments for Baltimore County or Anne Arundel County (part of the bridge does clip into AA)?
@ControlCityFreak The closest thing I can find to a statewide law enforcement agency in Nevada is the Highway Patrol. Otherwise, my two options for local law enforcement are 911 (if in Reno or Sparks), or the Sheriff (if anywhere outside of the two incorporated cities)…
@@ControlCityFreak ... to boot, it's not all that far away from MD 7 -- which, as mentioned above was the old alignment of US 40 -- aka "Philadelphia Road." :)

@ap70621 I've seen photos of it signed as MD 695. If you find a photo of the Key Bridge when it first opened, it was still only a two lane road on the approach with MD highway signs and not the blue shield. I think the biggest reason why, is back in the day the FHA frowned upon signing Interstates on toll roads.
Arizona signs 10 & 40 for LA in Phoenix & Flagstaff despite the Rams-Cardinals rivalry & Wisconsin signs 94,41,43 & 894 for Chicago in Milwaukee despite the Bears-Packers rivalry.
@@penguinsfan251 What?! Do you really think that rival football teams are a deciding or determining factor for which cities are chosen at interstate junctions? That is interesting! I had not considered that possibility. What evidence have you collected? How much? Personally, I suspect that the reason that there are no signs for Pittsburgh on I-70 in MD (or any other state AFAIK) is pretty simple and kind of obvious. And that is that I-70 doesn't go to/through Pittsburgh. It skirts about 30-40 miles south of the city. Can you do the capital beltway I 495 around DC?
I did half of it, but eventually yeah
Hey Todd, didn't know you were such a Baltimore guy! Also go Ravens 😂😂 (sorry)
Why isn't the South I-95 interchange Exit 0, with numbers increasing on the inner loop
Well that would make too much sense.
Soooo...Vegas coming up? Or Detroit/San Francisco content? lol
Vegas
If you’re in Baltimore, Frederick and Hagerstown don’t offer much in terms of interstate junctions, as you wouldn’t be going to DC via Frederick, nor would you be going to Roanoke or Harrisburg via Hagerstown.
I-70 should absolutely be Pittsburgh.
Go Steelers.
We need i495, DC beltway
I did my own video of 495 DC
Hi Todd
yo
Out to the ocean?!?!? Todd buddy it’s the Chesapeake Bay lol it all goes to the ocean eventually tho so fair enough :)
And what is that "best liquor store in the Baltimore area" off of Exit 29? I'm asking for a friend. The friend is me. 😇
Total Wine & More. It’s right off the exit. Although the one in Laurel is better IMO.
That’s the one
HI
Yo
Can you do 670
No immediate plans but maybe one day.
@@ControlCityFreak thanks Todd. Did you see the video I made joking with you
@@jonathonjennings2592I didn’t
They sign I-70 west for Frederic, but they can sign I-95 north for New York City? And bypass Philadelphia? Really, Maryland?!
