Narvik was a defeat for the Allies rather than Hitler. On the one hand, the Allies were able to drive the Germans out of the town of Narvik itself, even if they were not able to defeat them completely. The Allied escape from Narvik, on the other hand, ensured German war production of steel for many years of the war. Without the Swedish iron ore, Hitler would not have been able to attack the Soviet Union. The German defeat would have occurred years earlier if the Allies had remained in northern Norway.
