“The only sound I want to hear out of the Sakala now is her hull exploding.”
The Kapisi’s captain is one absolute badass.
Lets not forget that Kha'd Sajuuk was right, Kharak was indeed brought to fire and death by what they did
Yep he was right. However, Kharak was a dying planet. By pushing back out into the stars and reclaiming their Homeworld, it ultimately saved the Hiigaran people from their exile and their extinction.
Neither side was really in the wrong during this. The Gaalsien were somewhat right about what would happen should they push into the stars (granted, it was the Taiidan that did it, not Sajuuk). However, the Coalition was caught between a rock and a hard place with either continuing into space or remaining on their already dying planet and be wiped out with it.
@@hycron1234 If you are quick, you can save 600,000 people haha, but the game never acknowledges that and assumes 500k
Although if I could make a counter point.
While yes Kharak was dying so they needed to get off the planet. The taidan really did not have any legs to stand on when they burned Kharak since by that time they had ALREADY tried to deploy an orbital weapon to probably orbital bombard the higarians.
So, in reality THEY nullified the treaty LONG before the higarans remembered it. So…yeah they deserved the retaliation they got.
@@jeremydale4548 and that was done by Taiidani faction who want to raise the emperor's popularity, which is declining. It just makes people rebel (Republic faction)
you know it's future if the building walls are diagonal
I always assumed it was because of the insane sandstorms and winds on the planet.
@@HandleMyBallsUA-cam correct
as Harry Potter once said: "Diagon Alley!"
Which is strange to say given that the Kushan during DoK were relatively low-tech (aside from the Gaalsien) compared to their ancestors in HW1.
With the theory that the HW humans are descendants of us in the far future who have colonized another galaxy, it does still make sense
Having just seen Dune, it's crazy how much of a giant-machine vibe they share.
I was thinking the same thing when I first saw the harvesters in Dune, so cool!
Desert Power was perfected by the Kushan.
I love the HW stories because they don't need incompetence on the background to make "heroes" shine.
Holy buckets the Homeworld plotline is one of the best fantasy plotlines I've ever seen. It's so deep and this prequel ties it all together so much. And playing it and knowing the context of the earlier games is a mindfrick of epic proportions.
I had no idea the Ashoka had an EMP ability,
on my playthrough I would plant a lot of mines where the Ashoka would enter,
thus the Ashoka would be destroyed even before the battle begins.
I May have dropped several nukes on it
I did this and it’s a gamble whether they detonate or not because the ashoka floats over them, the actual gaalsien fleet has to go over them to detonate them
Kushan: "This object holds the key to our survival on this planet"

So, a couple nights ago, I watched *Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.*
In it, a young female scientist with short, brown hair and a caring mentor set out across the wasteland to make discoveries that, if her theories were correct, would save her species and change the foundation of science. Plot, history, and discovery are all almost exclusively conveyed through exposition.
As I watched, I wondered how anyone could possibly make this work. Then it hit me. I went back to this video and instantly started watching.
*What a masterpiece this game's story truly is.*
I remember The Spirits Within, primarily because of how awful it was.
@@PasserMontanus It was primarily a way to show off tech. In terms of story, it was better than Avatar in that respect. I actually enjoyed it.
The visuals of this game are stunning. Very Dune-esque.
a thing i love from this game is the feeling of heaviness of each vehicle and how the guns fire
I´ll give it to them.
That Intro hit me harder than expected after so long time after hw 1´s release.
DoK is a beautiful rendition of the original´s mood, and i loved every single minute of it.
So basically the bad guys knew about the treaty and the price if it will be broken. But thanks to human brain through the years it all got mystified and turned into religous stories, if only they kept it simple: this is a thing from our ancestors, it says we were exiled from there to here, if we do that, our kind is no longer at the mercy of the treaty and trouble comes upon us... interesting, guys who created Homeworld made darn awesome story which is deep and amazing. Can't wait for Homeworld 3.
That's why the story is interesting: the "bad guys" are actually right. The whole planet will be destroyed because of the actions of the player.
I thik that Gaalsien didn't know about the treaty - that knowledge was propably lost and evolved into a armageddon myth of sorts.
@@BarcelPL That's exactly the point the other comment was trying to make.
They knew of it but not as a fact, instead thinking of it in religious terms.
They knew it'll end badly, they just thought it's going to be the gods to punish them, not a vengeful Empire.
We've seen similar stuff happen in real life too. Not necessarily as religion, but in other ways. There's this experiment or at least an idea where you put a couple of monkeys (say 4 or 5) in a room, put a ladder in the middle of the room and put a banana on top of it.
Every time one of the monkeys tried to reach for the banana, the scientists doused the other monkeys with water. In time, the monkeys started to act violently towards any of them that even dared try to reach for the banana. You then change one of the monkeys. The new one of course doesn't know it, but it's forbidden to reach for the banana, so she tries it and gets beaten up. You continue doing it until you've replaced all the monkeys. At some point you'll end up with monkeys that know not to grab the banana but won't know why it's forbidden.
That's quite similar to this. The Gaalsien know not to build space tech, they know something bad will happen but misinterpret it as the will of gods.
Similarily, the Kadeshi evolved in a similar way, viewing the "Garden of Kadesh" as their sanctuary. They forgot who and why wants to get them, but they knew someone out there wants to take their lives and started to worship their hiding spot, the titular Garden of Kadesh, as a holy place that noone may ever leave out of fear that whoever it is out there, probably gods, will try to kill them. The Kadeshi ambassador says this: "The evil that drove us here will find and destroy you. From you they will know about us and come here. This cannot come to pass.".
They all knew not necessarily about the treaty itself, but knew that there's something out there that's going to punish them if they perform certain actions. Actions that unlike the treaty itself, are preserved as religious views.
The ironic part is Kiith Gaalsien stayed behind not taking a part in the Mothership project to take back their homeworld, and most likely perished when Taiidan empire bombarded the planet.
Because that's not how it works in real life. When stories get passed down from a space-capable civilization to one in the stone age, none of that is going to make sense and is just going to get changed to gods and prophecies, because they won't understand anything more.
Exceptionally well made game movie!
"I'd love to meet the people who designed this technology"
-You ARE the people who designed it! >__>
The feels when you playing this games. Is just like watching 1001 Arabian Nights set in space.
This is a much better game movie for Deserts of Kharak than the other videos on youtube. Thanks very much for putting it together and uploading it!
5:56 "Expedition log... we've launch... OH SH... BRACE FOR IMPACT! Weeeeeeee! anyway, expedition log..."
as far as prequels go this game was alright, music and artwork was spot-on and fit the Homeworld universe.
too bad it never got mod-suppport, could've done much
Agree on mod-support. But I have to askWhat can do you mod tho. This series is not like Space where you have multiple to choose from. With this engine....what can you do?..... What option do modder have?

They could have made bigger maps, the maps are just so small for a game thats supposed to happen in an endless desert. The whole fleet is designed for large maps and this impacts the gameplay a lot in Skirmish, once you play 1 skirmish the rest feels exactly the same.
They could have at least unlocked the large maps we get to see in the campaign... smh
But there are mods
1:17:40 Anyone else notice this is an almost perfect recreation of a scene the opening black and white cut scene of HW1? Makes me think the creators really cared.
I wonder how many people played this game without playing HW1 first and were horrified to dicover that (*SPOILER!*) the Galsiaans were actually right.
INDEED! i was like oFF
No. Galsiaans have no idea about 4000 years old treaty. Saying they are right just because you are coming from future is not good. Also Kharak is consumed by sand and bleeding out. So not going into stars will wipe humankind anyway.
@@SmallKittyPaw The Galsiaans proclaim that doing what the coalition is trying to accomplish will anger the gods. Point is, the people know that Kharak isn't their homeworld, but considered it as divine punishment (forfathers did something, and as punishment they were put on Kharak by the gods)
The Galsiaans promote that the only way to be forgiven and, returned to where they were taken from, is by faith..and that the coalition and its path to discover the ruins will only deepen the guilt.
Soooooo, what to make of it?
The people on kharak know they came from another world, but through the millenia , detailed knowledge was lost, and facts became myth, so yes:
The Galsiaans are right, for the wrong reasons, but right neverless!
The coalition is right, for the right reasons.
My take here is that if actual knowledge about the past had survived through time, It wouldn't change " The Burning of Kharak" ..but at least the coalition couldv'e prepared for it better.
the fact that the taiidans dodged the bullet for thousands of years, just to enforce a treaty that was as illigal as inhumane is also mind boggling
@@Azreal20 yeah its totally possible the vague memory of the treaty evolved through word of mouth into a religion. i mean its probably how most religions start, a story about a real event being twisted and altered through the ages
The great twist is that the Galseans were right - and for all their religious zealotry - they were doing what they thought was right.
Very nice work 👌👍
Nnn
Everyone is doing what they think is right.
They weren't right, though. Kharak was dying regardless, so if they didn't build the mothership then they would have baked to death along with the planet anyway. With the mothership, the Kushan as a people survived. Galsean ideology would have ensured their extinction.
@@Ugh-Fudge_Bwana true, but that doesn't discount the fact that they were literally correct as they where firebombed into extinction.
Such an amazing advanture story with RTS genre. It has Myth, War, Survival, Love, everything mix well to become a great story to enjoy, I might not be a good RTS player, but this story really make me enjoy to watch/read through it again and again.
Man. Wished the Homeworld games has their own movies, but now they're still working on Homeworld 3
Honestly I don't mind they take their time, its better to get it right the first time than later
i mean were getting Homeworld 3, Homeworld Mobile and a official tabletop RPG
all with their own stories, so seems like Gearbox wants to make Homeworld a bigger thing in some way
I wonder what's going to come first, Terraria 1.4 on mobile or Homeworld: Mobile
Hmmm
@@smolpp585 Could do without the 2nd. I don;t recall any mobile port of a PC ever doing well and it just takes resources from working on HW3. But then again I guess Homeworld Mobile sounds better than HW cashgrab which is what mobile generally translates too.
I wish the same with Killzone instead of some garbage fan film or low budget 3D nightmare. But if they actually care about this universe they would but if they didn't they'd either do two things. 1 they'd ruin the universe by adding or not understanding something that wasn't actually part of the universe like the Assassins Creed movie. Or they'll add liberal ideology and add things in the universe that wasn't in it before and ruin the universe like what they did with Disney Star Wars.
this is better than most movies made in the past 5 years
I have never heard about this game, it showed as a recomendation... and was surely not disappointed! Great story!
I really like seeing the small buggy’s fly all over the place
This game gives off Fantasy vibes, and yet it is a Sci-Fi game. A very great game.

why the dislikes, did people come here and go "oh it's exactly the cutscenes from the game like in the title, i don't like that". it's the equivalent of buying chocolate then complaining because they gave you chocolate. People are really dumb if you forget, they will always remind you
Its not limited to picky people, dont forget the trolls. There is even a bot that dislikes videos en masse.
I still remember when this game was still called Hardware: Shipbreakers back then lol
Just watched The Dark Crystal prequel and I'm impressed with the similarities of a newly empowered and hopeful people on the precipice of inevitable genocide...to be avenged by a handful of survivors.
the distant memory of a peace agreement and banishment altered over thousands of years evolved into a religion that turned the enemies of the Hiigaren empire into spiteful gods.
can,t get enough of this, thank you so much!!!!!
One of the best games I've played and an amazing prequel to Homeworld.
My strategy was to capture and reuse enemy units, spam them with air assaults, bombers, and cruise missiles.
Wasn't a prequel. The final artefact was the Homeworld mother ship.
Unfortunately there's too much retconning for it to really be a prequel that fits in with the original.
@@Greenmachine305... That's literally what a prequel means.
@@strategicsage7694 I mean... What did the retconn? The starting cutscene on homeworld was already pretty vague.
I love the concept 👍 "Kharak" is a kind of cactus in Farsi :D ,there acctualy is a deserty area in Iran which is called kharak
I know in Turkish and some other languages, "Kurak" is "arid" or "dry". Wouldn't be surprised if the naming was intentional given the sheer thematic inspirations the series has from the Middle East.
Neakal yes, as a Turkish i can completely confirm that it can be fully translated as “arid”
Well Homeworld is basicaly jews in space, most of the names like kharak , kadesh are from the story of the jews 40 years exodus to the promise land......
The Kushan are rooted in the Bedouin people. Another great sci-fi series inspired by the Bedouin was Frank Herbert's Dune, acknowledged as inspiration for Homeworld.
@@theMPrints Kadosh means "holy" in Hebrew and is similar to Kadesh, who are a very religious people, so definitely some influence from Judaism there too (although I believe the main factions are more influenced by Arab tradition)

Its videos like this that remind me why I keep coming back to these games as influence for my professional military science fiction writing, this series just has a way with baking in ethnic heritage and weight with technical military chatter. Also Bravo Zulu with this edit, its such a vibe.

Mad Max: Deserts of Kharak
And the Gaalsien are basically Immortan Joe's faction with hover tech. Funny thing is, their leader also wears a mask!
Superb job putting these together.
This feels like a feature length movie that I would have gladly paid cash to see. Technically, I did. Since I bought the game. But I would have gladly paid more cash to see a movie based on these cut-scenes, as long as it was done as well as this.
Imagine that. A game company and a UA-camr puts out something better than much of the crap coming from Hollywood. And at a fraction of the price.
Edit: Also, love the soundtrack in this game. Gearbox may have dropped the ball on some of it's games, but they hit a home-run with Homeworld and Deserts of Kharak.
The destruction of the Sakala was so satisfying...they kept the suspense on that betrayal well hidden.
Would have been nice if they had land battleships... Escorting the Carriers
Wish it had ended with 'Adagio for Strings' as Rachel looked up at the stars
Wish they mentioned it was newly constructed in what was to be a class of carriers.
IIRC its new. But then again its mentioned its an “older ship” in a cutscene.
Only reason Kapisi is a Sakala class is because they rushed construction.
First to start construction. Second to deploy.
Would also add to the fact that Kapisi wasnt fully outfitted.
The class of ships the sakala and kapisi are are designed for the coalitions expedition lore states 8 of them was planned to be built the ship I think your talking about that Jacob was in was an older class also on an expedition but suffered hull cave in
Thank you very much for this video!
i liked this game mainly on the premise of huge giant land vehicles
You could pause it anytime and the resulting picture would the a great cover for a sci fi book! The design is fantastic.

HDoK was a bit of a let-down for me after Homeworld, but I still recommend it as a RTS. Its average at best. But the story, just like in the original Homeworld, is very good. If you haven't played Homeworld (and you liked Deserts of Kharak) then do yourself a favor and go buy it right now. It has been remastered from its original release and looks very good now even by modern standards.
Edit: Played this again. Even better than I remember it. While I still prefer Homeworld 1, I no longer consider this game a "bit of a let down" as I originally described it.
Yepp HW1 was such a breakthrough in game mechanics (at the time). Sound design and graphics were awesome too (for its time). And the story. I remember being awed by its awesomeness when I was young...
"The ship seems to be named the "Taiidan."
HW 1 players: *Nervous Laughter*
Edit: I also forgot how wacky this game's vehicle physics got from yeeting LAVs off of dunes and cliffs to occasionally launching the Kapisi into orbit if it hit a dune wrong. I'm also glad that they managed to work in Homeworld's main system of "Hippity Hoppity your unit is my property".
Have you ever thought of doing a full "Homeworld" movie. Deserts of Kharak, Homworld, Homeworld Cataclysm and Homworld 2 all in one Movie? I love how you made this!
Thank you. I don't see the point in that. People can just start the playlist. Maybe someday I'll make a "Homeworld Cataclysm" video:)

Very precise. Almost NASA like R & D animation here!!!....very much cartoon graphics, but realistically applied . Excellent dialogue befitting a realistic scenario.
This is refreshing, unique, and very much stands on its own merit.
Hats off and a standing - O from my viewpoint‼️💯
15:00 show off.
Lol.
At least, they did got into the film and then can die if glory...
There's weird AI pathing, and there's just throwing the thing into full reverse.
I always feel bad for the Gaalsien. In the end, they were right all along. Saajuk's wrath, in the form of the Taiidan, came to Kharak and unleashed fury in the form of the Atmospheric Deprivation weapons. Countless lives were lost as Kharak became a fireball. Even though the War for Homeworld ended in victory for the Kushan I can't help but feel like their Kiith-sa would have felt vindicated in knowing the warnings he gave to the north came to fruition.
Very nice compilation, the cutscenes are amazing. But the gaalsians were always overmatched and outnumbered in every cutscene. I couldn't feel the good guys threatened or in danger, as you feel it when you play the game.
This is the closest thing I expected a new dune game since 2000.
36:20 One of the best OSTs...too brief, though.

@@Mocha69A I'm not sure about DoK, but for HW:R I've consistently seen 2-4 lobbies up on the steam version. Would join them but I'm really out of practice.

Only in the recent past, seekers fought to realize: skyward shone like beacons- a question of origin
It's been about 20 years since I played the original HW, and whenever I see those cutscene black bars coming up and down with that distinctive sound, I _still_ tense up 😅
Love how you cut in gameplay footage for whats otherwise a dull debrief screen. Love the map but its static and boring to look at compared to the gorgeous briefings and oil painting esque character profiles. It makes the game feel incomplete and unpolished otherwise
This guy loved LAVs 😆
Such a mythic story!
The cutscenes remind me of the original Thief games, the way they mix the Shadows of live actors with motion art.
I had the exact same thought when I first saw them!
I never got the impression that the world was dying in homeworld 1. I mean there was a lot to suggest the world was only slightly more advanced and prosperous than ours is today. With missile defense systems that damaged the tiidan fleet and being able to develop and build a massive mothership in just 60 years suggest better conditions than this
They were obviously FAR more advanced than we are now, and had committed almost all of their scarce remaining resources to building the Mothership, and preparing the cryo-teams to settle another world as their last hope. Little did they know just HOW last a hope it would be...
@@troyjollimore4100 I don't think it's that far more advanced, we just prioritise casinos and 'financial services'
The original Homeworld manual had a big lore section and there it is written that Kharak is a dying world. I just got out my old manual from 1999 and even Kiith Gaalsien is already mentioned there.
Beautiful game, now waiting for H3.
Fantastic job
Can you imagine that those deserts are actually the former bottoms of the seas of Kharak?

Aahh... That music...!!!
just because the Galseans were correct about the consequences does not mean that the Kiith S'jet were wrong to try to find a new homeworld even had they known the trouth they would have taken the journey anyway for the sake of advancing their own society and the betterment of mankind
This is well done. Audio popping is a problem, but the editing is otherwise seamless.
Ngl the in game cutscenes are waaay better than any ingame cutscene you find in any rts, even in todays rts gamea
What an excellent movie!
