I agree about 306- Rei Fukuyama’s Dulcineia was exquisite, a standout performance. The only reason I can see that she didn’t make it is because she is short and doesn’t have the “ideal” body type. The fact that she embodied the essence of Dulcineia became irrelevant. The same happens to shorter male dancers who despite breathtaking artistry and fabulous technique, don’t get a chance to audition if they are not the minimum height of 1,75m tall. I am tired of watching boring dancers in professional companies who are tall and lean but without an ounce of artistry. The jurors know companies won’t give her a contract.
There have been a lot of short dancers. Even Crystal Huang is pretty tiny. It's definitely her stocky body type that limited her potential. Her body will only mature more as she ages and I can't disagree with the judges for not being able to see her in a professional company. There are just too many talented dancers out there.

I believe 306 didn’t win a prize due entirely due to her body type and short stature. It’s quite a shame. She has impeccable technique, musicality and taste. She dances cleanly, elegantly and gives much of herself in her performance. She purely classical perfection. Her maturity, her expressions were phenomenal. But in the real, cold world, her body will hold her back: this is a shame because any company that discounts her is making a mistake. .
It's well past time that the powers that be listen to the people who buy the tickets (us!!). If the comments here are any reflection of the theatre-going public, it's clear we're eager to see dancers like her (306)!!

I’m very disappointed that 306 didn’t make it to the final. I can’t help but thinking it must have something to do with discrimination against her body type, since this happened to her 2 years in a roll at Prix de Lausanne. It’s such a shame that of all the world renowned ballet institutions participated, no one is brave enough to break the current Euro-centric bodytype standards to offer her a spot at their school or company. Even my favorite is still 317 but 306 definitely deserves more. But I’m also glad that she is getting more stage performances here and there dancing with professionals such as Madoka Sugai who was a 1st prize winner of PDL back in 2012 and now is a principal dancer with Hamburg ballet. All my best wishes to Rei. She deserves much more❤
That was my take as well, since her dancing is so beautiful, I could only wonder if it was body-type. She is gorgeous, physically, as well as, as a dancer…but…is it possible there was an issue with her height?
I totally agree. I reckon this was body type related. She’s absolutely stunning in all things classical dancing. Her technique is flawless and her control is beyond description, she should’ve made finals. And 317 was my absolute favourite. She really performed! She really danced her contemporary variation which no one else did for that Christopher Wheeldon repertoire, and her classical was clean too. Shame on the Prix for selecting dancers of athletic body types to participate but not giving them a fair chance to make the finals.
@@agyos yeh I think it probably have something to do with that. Recently I just watched a video of PDL in 1989. The commentators straight up said “I just wish she had a smaller head and a few inches longer legs” about one Asian participant. It’s definitely better now but I wonder if there is still some of that left in the judges’ heads.
Watching 306 in class and performance, she was definitely one of the standouts. However her body type is probably holding her back from finalist status. I don’t agree with that as she is a stunning dancer, but it seems to be the only reason she was not a finalist.
Thank you for the graceful advocacy you did for dancer 306. We all know why she did not make it to any award for two years in a row and the ballet world needs to STOP discriminating dancers for their body type. She is a wonderful dancer and artist and deserves a chance in a company!
The sad thing is, the dancer 306's body type actually looks HEALTHY and muscular enough to pull off the physicality of ballet without snapping the heel or the ankle or whatever. Her body type should be considered normal. SMH
This competition is designed to provide a competitive platform for the best dancers . It helps them move forward. If you know the goal is a professional dance career, doesn’t it make sense for them to choose a dancer who is actually employable in the future? I’m NOT saying it’s right to only have professional dancers who only fit a predetermined body standard. It’s not. So do you think by choosing a different body type it would force dance companies to choose them? I don’t. Therefore the competition chooses according to the body type.
Too bad John Cranko died so young, he choreographed for all body types and Stuttgart Ballet was exceptional focused on talent and not image. Too tall, too short, too bosomy didn’t matter.
306 is ON the music more than any other dancer. I would love to see her as a principle someday soon! its time to break out of old ideas! We are the audience, give us what we WANT to see, NOT what you think we should see. Evolve!!!
Why would they loan her a tutu? Does she actually go to Bayer because it stated she goes to two schools. How is she dancing at two schools? Did the other girl from Bayer get a special tutu? Didn’t she also get Miko Fogarty’s tutu as well? Seems like she’s getting a lot of preferential treatment 🤔
I am not a dancer just a ballet lover and I noticed 306 in class and thought she had something special even there. Her variation I found very affecting, charming and precise. There is an emotional generosity to her dancing which I connected with. I, too, was surprised she didn't make the finals. Maybe they didn't want too much representation from Japan. All the Japanese dancers were very strong.
I don't watch a ton of ballet, but I always watch Prix for some reason. Natalie Steele is the first dancer to make me want to watch the whole Aurora variation. She did it so beautifully.
João Pedro's Harlequinade variation was my favorite and I had the same response, I also said that it was adorable. Harlequinade is one of my favorite ballets and it is true that if not done correctly it can be less exciting. This young dancer was far from that, he made sure he brought the character to life while also engaging with the audience. Usually at these competitions you see the female variations so it was so good to see the male variation of Harlequinade.
I also noticed 306 all the time. I wondered if she didn't make it because of body type (which, if that was the case, is SO crap), because she's smaller and muscular? I hate that they even have a category about suitability of physique in their judging for that. If someone has come this far in their dancing in a culture that loves a strict body type, and they have become that damn good, celebrate them, dammit!
Wow 🤩 as a half Portuguese and half Brazilian professional ballerina, I was in tears watching my two native countries at number 1 and 2. Martino had a bravura and confidence backed by impeccable technique seen usually in professional dancers. Then, in comes João Pedro (that’s his full first name- we don’t do middle names - it’s a compound name like my father’s Paulo Sergio!) who absolutely blew me away. Harlequinade is perfect for the iconic playful joie de vivre Brasil’s people are known for. He’s a lefty (like the GOAT 🐐 Leonid Sarafanov!) and he was so effortless and embodied Pierrot so brilliantly that the audience fell in love (me too!) and then after collecting themselves they realized how perfect his technique was. Also as a often casted as Gamzatti, I applaud Paloma for her performance including attitude (you gotta love to be the center of attention and have that glint on your eye), beautiful jumps (it’s all about air time) AND the moment I judge all ballerinas in the role: the soutenu turn in the diagonal - you have to indulge in it, use your back and let your head linger… Because of my Russian/former Soviet republics/Eastern Europe schooling, work, mentors, style, I’d love to see a Moscow Baller Competition video too. I've always been a huge fan of Crystal. I would also recommend watching her contemporary routine; she has won The Dance Awards, which is a huge dance competition, three times, and she is a very, VERY, strong contemporary dancer
VERY strong! And VERY strong in hip hop, jazz, Broadway, ballroom, etc. It’s quite astounding, I recommend anyone who’s interested in seeing more look at her social media feeds.
Good job, girls! You highlighted every dancer's qualities and I loved the little bonus shoutout to Rei. The first scholarship winner's performance was amazing, it's hard to do a technically challenging variation like that with such amount of theatricality, expressiveness and panache. And he was the youngest finalist too (15y and 2 months)! I'd love to see more videos like this.

I loved this - I watched the whole thing. I particularly loved Martinho and Paloma - their contemporary solos were SO amazing as well. Completely agree with you regarding 306 - I thought she really stood out the whole week and was shocked when she didn't make the finals. THIS! and it's so effing ridiculous! Rei totally should have made finals! I love ballet so much but I HATE THE BUSINESS of ballet! What other industry is allowed to hire or not based on merely "the look" of a person's body!? She's "too short" I was "too tall" But her technique and artistry is SPECTACULAR!!!! @@clairehaywood5032 interestingly probably 20 yrs ago Rei's suze & shape would have been the perfect one chosen. So many earlier Prima Ballerinas were shorter as were their male counterparts. In today's companies a shorter brilliant male dancer needs an equally brilliant shorter female dancer.
That’s not controversial. What is controversial is Crystal Huang was technically not eligible to compete but they changed/ interpreted the rules differently for her. Rules state you can’t have been paid/ contracted as a dancer before. But they “interpreted” it as “she was young so it’s allowed.” But that’s what happens when they are besties with yagp

Sometimes when I watch Prix, i think "oh i think they should have placed higher" but then i keep watching and when everybody who gets a scholarship is so amazing, it is way too hard to say one did better than another, i cant imagine how hard it is for the judges.

Based on the other female dancers picked, do you think the judges were favouring the more stereotypes ballerina body type, very lean and long legs, and that’s why they didn’t pick rei?
@sophielandry5619 I don't think so. Maria Kochetkova is a prize winner from PDL and she is also a "petite" ballerina. I really think that the competition this year was really tough, especially for the girls.
I think Rei didn't make it because there were already 2 japanese dancers. 2 from USA, 2 from southmerica, 1 australian, 1 european, and I'm missing someone. Almost every continent is "represented" in the finals.

I watched most of the Prix from classes both classical and contemporary loved the energy of the teachers who were so encouraging to all to the selections and then the final it was my little indulgence which I completely immersed myself in. It 's so good to know that the future of ballet/contemporary is in such good hands.
I was so impressed with her! She was my favorite dancer from all that I was able to watch and I believe I saw about 100 or so of the performances. She was just wonderful to watch. Also very surprised she wasn't included in the top 20.

This is an event that I didn't even know about until a week or so ago, when a ballerina I happen to follow on YT was in it Melanie McIntyre, via Eva Nys photography. I've been curious how she placed in it and now it looks like I get to see even more of it.
She didn't make it to the finals. The competition this year was extra fierce though, as you can see. Was really bummed she didn't make it to the finals, was rooting for her, as well as 306.

So I just watched PDL for the first time thank to you all! Actually right after you called it “the Olympics of the ballet world”, I stopped (bc spoilers) & immediately went over to watch the entire week! (So sorry this is long!) Now weeks later, I’m back! Bc lbh this video was the real goal & very well worth the wait! 🥰 It was such a pleasure hearing your thoughtful, caring & clearly well & hard earned perspectives on these insanely talented young dancers & PDL! And for some of us (who quit ballet in EARLY single digits 🫣), it was SO informative! I wish you all could’ve weighed in on the whole week! Maybe next year PDL can hire you all to be the commentators?!🤞🏾Bc, & I get that a lot of the target audience is already in the know….but there’s like 1000% more info specifically about these ballets & these dancers in this one video than I learned the whole week. As you both said, just to get into the final top seventy is an achievement in itself and I wish them all the most successful careers possible. Your comments were enjoyable and 'spot on' all the time. Also THRILLING was the word that kept coming to mind for me in some of those finalists performances. Ballet can be serious but it can also give you a thrill! I'm late in watching this video, sorry! I LOVE this video! Please do more of these! My favorite was the Argentinian girl, Paloma. It's no surprise that she had such exquisite port de bras ¡because her name means "dove" in Spanish! I also looked up Crystal's contemporary dance and was blown away! When you mentioned the last girl, Rei, who did not make finals - I'm afraid I have to introduce a sour note probably for the first time ever in your comment section. 🍋 My first thought (as someone completely outside of the dance world so hopefully this is an out-of-date stereotype) was that maybe it was not that she lacked skill, but that she might not fit the female body type beauty standard in ballet. (I mean, on the official Prix de Lausanne website, look at the picture they've chosen of one dancer, which covers the whole screen.) But then I thought the male dancer beauty standard was height, and the boys who won scholarships were on the less tall side. So I'm hoping I'm wrong about why Rei did not make the finals. I enjoyed your commentary so much because you pointed out things I would not have picked up on myself. It also helps that you know what the variations are supposed to look like and can compare these performances accordingly. i love the captions you guys have put in! the note on who's talking when, the funny little notes on music (princess music but strings) not only are these things helpful it also just means a lot to have good captions. I need captions due to sensory issues and i would not be surprised if there are deaf/HoH subscribers of yours as well who appreciate them.
Please keep doing this. I love watching the Prix every year. I'd love you guys to go back and do maybe that last few years of Prix finalists from like 2020 on, and review the finalists.If you need a video idea. Maybe also for some of the other big competitions that include pas, or YAGP, or others!
I've been watching the Prix since I was in high school in Switzerland in the eighties, and I can't believe how much better the contestants are nowadays. Of course, that makes it even harder to win, because everybody is so outstanding. I would also love for you to comment on the modern variations - I don't know modern dance as well as classical ballet. What struck me for some of the contestants was that the variation they chose could make them stand out or fall flat. And I feel like that was probably influenced by their entourage - so the ones that won not only had the technique, the endurance, the cleanliness and the musicality, but they also had teachers and advisers who knew them well enough to make them brilliant...
Huh, finally found some commentary about the Prix... I watch it with invested interest as casual dance enjoyer (with potato gist/knowledge about technical stuff, but always interested in particulars of interpretation, musicality, movement integration/characterisation) for about 3 years and this year 4 of my personal favourites poll took first 4 places. Which makes me super happy. Some fragmented tidbits. Joao Silva at 15 yo having technique, artistry, expression, panache really makes my 34 yo ass feeling stupid. Martinho Lima Santos showed OUT, his contemporary was mindblowing and it was especially interesting to watch this particular contemporary piece performed by several finalists and his stood out beautifully when it comes to nuance, individuality and energy. Absolutely loved Paloma's arms/hands, her smile, vibrancy about her (plus chef's kiss to choose this contemporary where she looked luminous). Crystal Huang left me debating my existence again, so yound and SO talented. While I was glad a lot of my personal favourites got into finals, so choices were...CHOICES imho. Lack of 306 (Rei) still makes me wonder...and that wonder is not taking me to a happy conclusion about the reasoning behind leaving her behind. It's getting a bit tiring to see 'ballet princess' stereotypical archetype being reinforced with particular image, but oh well, nothing new for me, watching ballet for some time already.

I’m very disappointed that 306 didn’t make it to the final. I can’t help but thinking it must have something to do with discrimination against her body type, since this happened to her 2 years in a roll at Prix de Lausanne. It’s such a shame that of all the world renowned ballet institutions participated, no one is brave enough to break the current Euro-centric bodytype standards to offer her a spot at their school or company.
Even my favorite is still 317 but 306 definitely deserves more. But I’m also glad that she is getting more stage performances here and there dancing with professionals such as Madoka Sugai who was a 1st prize winner of PDL back in 2012 and now is a principal dancer with Hamburg ballet. All my best wishes to Rei. She deserves much more❤
That was my take as well, since her dancing is so beautiful, I could only wonder if it was body-type. She is gorgeous, physically, as well as, as a dancer…but…is it possible there was an issue with her height?
I totally agree. I reckon this was body type related. She’s absolutely stunning in all things classical dancing. Her technique is flawless and her control is beyond description, she should’ve made finals.
And 317 was my absolute favourite. She really performed! She really danced her contemporary variation which no one else did for that Christopher Wheeldon repertoire, and her classical was clean too.
Shame on the Prix for selecting dancers of athletic body types to participate but not giving them a fair chance to make the finals.
@@agyos yeh I think it probably have something to do with that. Recently I just watched a video of PDL in 1989. The commentators straight up said “I just wish she had a smaller head and a few inches longer legs” about one Asian participant. It’s definitely better now but I wonder if there is still some of that left in the judges’ heads.

Watching 306 in class and performance, she was definitely one of the standouts. However her body type is probably holding her back from finalist status. I don’t agree with that as she is a stunning dancer, but it seems to be the only reason she was not a finalist.

Thank you for the graceful advocacy you did for dancer 306. We all know why she did not make it to any award for two years in a row and the ballet world needs to STOP discriminating dancers for their body type. She is a wonderful dancer and artist and deserves a chance in a company!
The sad thing is, the dancer 306's body type actually looks HEALTHY and muscular enough to pull off the physicality of ballet without snapping the heel or the ankle or whatever. Her body type should be considered normal. SMH

This competition is designed to provide a competitive platform for the best dancers . It helps them move forward. If you know the goal is a professional dance career, doesn’t it make sense for them to choose a dancer who is actually employable in the future? I’m NOT saying it’s right to only have professional dancers who only fit a predetermined body standard. It’s not. So do you think by choosing a different body type it would force dance companies to choose them? I don’t. Therefore the competition chooses according to the body type.
Too bad John Cranko died so young, he choreographed for all body types and Stuttgart Ballet was exceptional focused on talent and not image. Too tall, too short, too bosomy didn’t matter.
I met João Pedro da Silva! He is from my ballet school in Goiânia! He is a very nice person and a really good dancer
306 is ON the music more than any other dancer. I would love to see her as a principle someday soon! its time to break out of old ideas! We are the audience, give us what we WANT to see, NOT what you think we should see. Evolve!!!
My daughter goes to the same school as Crystal, Bayer Ballet. She says that the tutu is indeed from the Mariinsky.

Why would they loan her a tutu? Does she actually go to Bayer because it stated she goes to two schools. How is she dancing at two schools? Did the other girl from Bayer get a special tutu? Didn’t she also get Miko Fogarty’s tutu as well? Seems like she’s getting a lot of preferential treatment 🤔

The dudes are no joke. Male ballet dancers need so much more credit. Very physically demanding techniques done sooo gracefully.
I am not a dancer just a ballet lover and I noticed 306 in class and thought she had something special even there. Her variation I found very affecting, charming and precise. There is an emotional generosity to her dancing which I connected with. I, too, was surprised she didn't make the finals. Maybe they didn't want too much representation from Japan. All the Japanese dancers were very strong.
I don't watch a ton of ballet, but I always watch Prix for some reason. Natalie Steele is the first dancer to make me want to watch the whole Aurora variation. She did it so beautifully.

João Pedro's Harlequinade variation was my favorite and I had the same response, I also said that it was adorable. Harlequinade is one of my favorite ballets and it is true that if not done correctly it can be less exciting. This young dancer was far from that, he made sure he brought the character to life while also engaging with the audience. Usually at these competitions you see the female variations so it was so good to see the male variation of Harlequinade.
I also noticed 306 all the time. I wondered if she didn't make it because of body type (which, if that was the case, is SO crap), because she's smaller and muscular? I hate that they even have a category about suitability of physique in their judging for that. If someone has come this far in their dancing in a culture that loves a strict body type, and they have become that damn good, celebrate them, dammit!
I was going to comment the exact same thing….her body type is not standard for classical ballet…unfortunately there’s nothing she can do about it….
Wow 🤩 as a half Portuguese and half Brazilian professional ballerina, I was in tears watching my two native countries at number 1 and 2. Martino had a bravura and confidence backed by impeccable technique seen usually in professional dancers. Then, in comes João Pedro (that’s his full first name- we don’t do middle names - it’s a compound name like my father’s Paulo Sergio!) who absolutely blew me away. Harlequinade is perfect for the iconic playful joie de vivre Brasil’s people are known for. He’s a lefty (like the GOAT 🐐 Leonid Sarafanov!) and he was so effortless and embodied Pierrot so brilliantly that the audience fell in love (me too!) and then after collecting themselves they realized how perfect his technique was. Also as a often casted as Gamzatti, I applaud Paloma for her performance including attitude (you gotta love to be the center of attention and have that glint on your eye), beautiful jumps (it’s all about air time) AND the moment I judge all ballerinas in the role: the soutenu turn in the diagonal - you have to indulge in it, use your back and let your head linger…
Because of my Russian/former Soviet republics/Eastern Europe schooling, work, mentors, style, I’d love to see a Moscow Baller Competition video too.

I've always been a huge fan of Crystal. I would also recommend watching her contemporary routine; she has won The Dance Awards, which is a huge dance competition, three times, and she is a very, VERY, strong contemporary dancer
VERY strong! And VERY strong in hip hop, jazz, Broadway, ballroom, etc. It’s quite astounding, I recommend anyone who’s interested in seeing more look at her social media feeds.

The first scholarship winner's performance was amazing, it's hard to do a technically challenging variation like that with such amount of theatricality, expressiveness and panache. And he was the youngest finalist too (15y and 2 months)! I'd love to see more videos like this.

I loved this - I watched the whole thing. I particularly loved Martinho and Paloma - their contemporary solos were SO amazing as well. Completely agree with you regarding 306 - I thought she really stood out the whole week and was shocked when she didn't make the finals. Lovely that you celebrated her here - I hope she gets to see that.
Totally agree with your opinion that Rei (306) was brilliantly amazing and I too was jawdropped that she was NOT a finalist. I actually wrote her number down as one of my picks to watch rught from watching classes
I don't want to be controversial, but I kind of think the reason Rei didn't make finals is because the judges didn't like her body type.

@@clairehaywood5032 interestingly probably 20 yrs ago Rei's suze & shape would have been the perfect one chosen. So many earlier Prima Ballerinas were shorter as were their male counterparts. In today's companies a shorter brilliant male dancer needs an equally brilliant shorter female dancer.
That’s not controversial. What is controversial is Crystal Huang was technically not eligible to compete but they changed/ interpreted the rules differently for her. Rules state you can’t have been paid/ contracted as a dancer before. But they “interpreted” it as “she was young so it’s allowed.” But that’s what happens when they are besties with yagp

As someone who don't know ballet I was mesmerized by 302's performance. Idk the way she was floating with the music captivated me more than the others
Sometimes when I watch Prix, i think "oh i think they should have placed higher" but then i keep watching and when everybody who gets a scholarship is so amazing, it is way too hard to say one did better than another, i cant imagine how hard it is for the judges.

Based on the other female dancers picked, do you think the judges were favouring the more stereotypes ballerina body type, very lean and long legs, and that’s why they didn’t pick rei?
@sophielandry5619 I don't think so. Maria Kochetkova is a prize winner from PDL and she is also a "petite" ballerina. I really think that the competition this year was really tough, especially for the girls.
We believe she will go far, such a lovely artist. And João did fabulously too! So proud of them all ✨✨🫰🏻🫰🏻
I think Rei didn't make it because there were already 2 japanese dancers. 2 from USA, 2 from southmerica, 1 australian, 1 european, and I'm missing someone. Almost every continent is "represented" in the finals.

I watched most of the Prix from classes both classical and contemporary loved the energy of the teachers who were so encouraging to all to the selections and then the final it was my little indulgence which I completely immersed myself in. It 's so good to know that the future of ballet/contemporary is in such good hands.
I was so impressed with her! She was my favorite dancer from all that I was able to watch and I believe I saw about 100 or so of the performances. She was just wonderful to watch. Also very surprised she wasn't included in the top 20.

I read some comments before I saw 306 and was expecting a much heavier dancer. She looks healthy and muscular.
These are kids but they portray such majesty and maturity. No 18 year old I knew behaved with such discipline that ballet demands.

This is an event that I didn't even know about until a week or so ago, when a ballerina I happen to follow on YT was in it Melanie McIntyre, via Eva Nys photography. I've been curious how she placed in it and now it looks like I get to see even more of it.
She didn't make it to the finals. The competition this year was extra fierce though, as you can see. Was really bummed she didn't make it to the finals, was rooting for her, as well as 306.

Bc lbh this video was the real goal & very well worth the wait! 🥰 It was such a pleasure hearing your thoughtful, caring & clearly well & hard earned perspectives on these insanely talented young dancers & PDL! And for some of us (who quit ballet in EARLY single digits 🫣), it was SO informative! I wish you all could’ve weighed in on the whole week! My favorite was the Argentinian girl, Paloma. It's no surprise that she had such exquisite port de bras ¡because her name means "dove" in Spanish!

When you mentioned the last girl, Rei, who did not make finals - I'm afraid I have to introduce a sour note probably for the first time ever in your comment section. 🍋 My first thought (as someone completely outside of the dance world so hopefully this is an out-of-date stereotype) was that maybe it was not that she lacked skill, but that she might not fit the female body type beauty standard in ballet. (I mean, on the official Prix de Lausanne website, look at the picture they've chosen of one dancer, which covers the whole screen.)
But then I thought the male dancer beauty standard was height, and the boys who won scholarships were on the less tall side.
So I'm hoping I'm wrong about why Rei did not make the finals.
I enjoyed your commentary so much because you pointed out things I would not have picked up on myself. It also helps that you know what the variations are supposed to look like and can compare these performances accordingly.

I've been watching the Prix since I was in high school in Switzerland in the eighties, and I can't believe how much better the contestants are nowadays. Of course, that makes it even harder to win, because everybody is so outstanding. I would also love for you to comment on the modern variations - I don't know modern dance as well as classical ballet. What struck me for some of the contestants was that the variation they chose could make them stand out or fall flat. And I feel like that was probably influenced by their entourage - so the ones that won not only had the technique, the endurance, the cleanliness and the musicality, but they also had teachers and advisers who knew them well enough to make them brilliant...

Huh, finally found some commentary about the Prix...
I watch it with invested interest as casual dance enjoyer (with potato gist/knowledge about technical stuff, but always interested in particulars of interpretation, musicality, movement integration/characterisation) for about 3 years and this year 4 of my personal favourites poll took first 4 places. Which makes me super happy.
Some fragmented tidbits. Joao Silva at 15 yo having technique, artistry, expression, panache really makes my 34 yo ass feeling stupid. Martinho Lima Santos showed OUT, his contemporary was mindblowing and it was especially interesting to watch this particular contemporary piece performed by several finalists and his stood out beautifully when it comes to nuance, individuality and energy. Absolutely loved Paloma's arms/hands, her smile, vibrancy about her (plus chef's kiss to choose this contemporary where she looked luminous). Crystal Huang left me debating my existence again, so yound and SO talented. While I was glad a lot of my personal favourites got into finals, so choices were...CHOICES imho. Lack of 306 (Rei) still makes me wonder...and that wonder is not taking me to a happy conclusion about the reasoning behind leaving her behind. It's getting a bit tiring to see 'ballet princess' stereotypical archetype being reinforced with particular image, but oh well, nothing new for me, watching ballet for some time already.
