They did launch Mars probes before the USSR collapsed, so there could very well be chances in some other timeline that USSR didn't collapsed, they got a KTM-5 running on Mars today within their Mars colony.
Not to mention that tram can handle massive swings in weather temperature from Siberian cold snaps to Siberian heat waves (they can get pretty hot and sticky in the summer)
As 'mars' is only a delusional fiction, i would say the trams ( which are REAL and not imaginary ) will do a lot better with some logical and much needed rail maintainance here on ACTUAL earth.
I remember those things. Big rusty and noisy. With chain-pulled guillotine doors. Whenever people got smashed by those - they could not restore their breath before riding through 2-3 tram stations. Also as a kid I loved that the door were operated by relays (often exposed into passenger compartment). Since they usually were bodge-repaired they emitted different colors sparks: yellow, green, red, white, depending on the contactor materials bodged into those. 90s were miserable times... But as kids we've seen nuggets of beauty in ugly things.

The video brought back happy memories of living in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, 25 years ago. The KTM-5s epitomise so much of what I loved about Russia then. A few of the routes in Krasnoyarsk still survive, and with roads often now at a standstill thanks to private car ownership of a level which the Soviet town planners could never have imagined, the trams have gone from being the slowest to the fastest means of transport! May they live on long.
Oh, I remember one of the KTM-5 was serving in Moscow, near Tulskaya street. I think it was in 2008-2009. And, if you search for pictures of more modern Russian tram cars, you will find out, that the KTM-5's legendary emergency brake design is implemented in nearly all trams, produced after 70's.
A big thank you for this video! I was glad to see even my city in this video. The city of Perm. That Romantic Tram Cafe is very popular, people have to book places for days before their ride. The city has enough money to buy new trams and replace these old KTMs, but those ones wich still work is on very good and strong condition and do their work very well.
As someone living in Nab. Chelny, I can assure you it's not so bad now. Also our tramway was lengthened and there are plans of making it even more longer. Loved your video, tho ;)

I admit, I love trolleybuses more (I don't know of you made a video about them) but trams is such an amazing legacy we have. I even remember going to culinary college and actually using tram to get there, 15 minutes from subway, from here to the-e-re...and back. Such memories. I'm from Saint-Petersburg by the way 🤝

I live in Krasnodar, and when I accidentally saw the first part in the recommendations, I immediately thought that I had not seen these trams for a long time, but I saw many "other" Soviet-looking trams in surprisingly good condition. A wonderfully rugged and versatile tram. I well remember my guide in Novosibersk becoming excited when I asked her to take me for a ride round the city by tram. When a KTM5 arrived at the stop, she loudly exclaimed "Oh good - a Red Devil! I used these when I was a child!" The ride quality was very bouncy and rough, but it was exciting and we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Amazing this is wonderful, these trams are such a benefit to their communities and cost next to nothing to run. Breaks my heart imagining if all the small community streetcar networks in the United States had stuck around and not replaced by buses.
I want to make a video about railways of Serbia in the next year. For now I don't know much about the subject and have absolutely no idea about the contents of the video, but I definitely know what will be the soundtrack 😀
Great video! It would be interesting for me as a Czech if you'd make a video about the Tatra T3 trams in former USSR. In the Czech Republic, T3s are knows as reliable and sturdy machines heck the capital city of Prague still has over 400 units, so it would be interesting to know how those over 11 000 trams worked in Russia.

9:15 Were they really such a breakthrough? Japan is full of those. In fact, the remaining four 161-series units in Osaka and Sakai are not only single-carriage double-ended cars, but, with them currently doing their 93rd year of service, are the oldest tramcars in regular service. To put it into perspective, these trams were already 35 years old when KTM-5's started production. And they're still in almost mint condition. Most pre WW2 trams were single-car double-ended models.
2-sided cabin tram-cars were never very common in Russia 'coz almost every city with trams had (and has) place for tram turnarounds. Probably the most common 2-sided trams are in Saint-Petersburg
Great story, well told. I had seen film of the KTM-5 cars operating in many cities, but did not know their history. I have even more respect for these robust vehicles, the citizens who travel daily on them, and the people who maintain them and keep them going.

If you get a chance, you should check out the history of the interurban trolleys that would run for many miles at high speeds (even up to 140 kph!) between cities in America during the early 1900’s. There are only a couple of them left.

Спасибо за видео, посмотрел оба видеоролика с субтитрами. Я живу на Урале и в моем городе ходят как трамваи, так и маршрутки, трамваи есть как советские показанные в видео, так и современные. Хорошо было бы если новых трамваев еще больше было бы, еще недавно меняли трамвайные пути, это тоже хорошо.
Скучаю по теплым сиденьям-черпакам! С мороза сесть замерзшей частью тела на горячее и ноги у тена погреть такое удовольствие было, как баня. В трамвае холодно, а ценной части тела тепло.

Wonderful story and pictures, both episodes, I learned a lot. I only took a KTM5 once while I was in Biysk, Siberia. It is true, they are mostly found in remote provincial towns. In Barnaul I didn't see any, they seem to prefer CKD T3SU and T6B5SU.
Pityfully, citizens of many US towns can only imagine aboute 'unbelievable' 40 minutes frequency public transportation. I am not mentioning condition of US urban rail transport just in a manner of courtesy.
@Matt We know. Most european adults too. But we, who are not adults yet, need a good public transport. And also, (speaking of prague where I live) most adults living near tram or metro use them to travel to the center. It's faster, more ecologic, you don't need to drive, you can reed or work. Also, If everybody would Instead of Trams and Metro use their own car, the traffic would absolutely fail. European cities are just not prepared for cars.

In Perm we have around 100 trams still running, КТМ is one of them, tram sistem in my city is almoust 100 years old. I also dreamed of becoming a tram driver in my childhood😅
Привет из Челябинска! В нашем городе самый большой парк КТМ-5 в мире, их около 160 единиц. У нас была целая программа по превышению КТМ в низкопольный трамвай. Целых 5 лет из депо выходили очень красивые и аккуратные модификации, но последний, полностью низкопольный кузов, из-за повреждений рамы так и не был собран в полноценную машину и списан. Но сейчас даже у нас (а видео из нашего города было в первой части, когда вы говорили про невозможность эксплуатации новых трамваев на кривых и старых рельсах) КТМ-5 нашлась замена. По заказу Москвы на Кировском заводе был разработан трамвай 71-628 или КТМ-28 (в период выпуска КТМ-5 в Советском Союзе изменились правила присвоения названий трамваям и он успел получит имя 71-605, следующий стал 71-608 и так далее). Так вот один опытный КТМ-28 привезли на испытания в Челябинск, прежде чем отправить 90 его собратьев в Москву. Губернатор Челябинской области проехался на нем и решил купить 30 таких трамваев в наш город. В другом городе-рекордсмене по числу КТМ-5 в регулярной эксплуатации, Магнитогорске, что на юге Челябинской области руководство Металлургического комбината давно купило для города новые вагоны КТМ-19 и КТМ-23, а также машины производства завода УралТрансМаш из Екатеринбурга. Теперь кварталы четырехэтажного Соцгорода (Социалистического Города), спроектированного в 1929 году немецкими и американскими архитекторами, объезжает не угловатый КТМ-5, а его потомки

Watching this video, I've asked my GF to take me to a tram ride today in Minsk. My curiosity in tram ignited when I saw them for the first time in Moscow 3.5 years ago. We don't have trams in India anymore and I'm very excited to travel one today. :)
What do you mean the KTM-5 is not cute? Yes it is! Are you blind? Like Thomas the Tank Engine's Soviet Cousin who never calls!🥰🥰🥰. You could make a whole Russian kids animated show about a reliable, old KTM-5 that's been in service since the good ol' oppressive days!
In claiming that the KTM 5 is the most numerous tram class in the world, one should bear in mind that the Tatra T4 was identical to the Tatra T3, except that it was a narrower version for certain cities (2.2 rather than 2.5 metres wide). Only for this reason did it have a different class number. The combined total of T3/T4 trams produced was 16,748 including 122 unpowered trailers. It's a pedantic point of course and both the Russian and the Czech tram hold an honorable place at the top of the world statistics board.
People who work in public transit tend to be some of the most dedicated people, comparable to medical workers, because they know that what they're doing is vital to society even if no one appreciates it and as such they work incredibly hard to keep things running. In Denmark DSB has been keeping the now over 30 year old IC3s running and up to date to the point where foreigners are shocked at how comfortable these regular commuter trains are, having levels of comfort that sometimes exceed high speed rail in other countries.
I did actually ride these in Moscow when I was a kid in the beginning of this century... Good memories. Had to really convince my grandma to ride one because our route would be well enough covered by metro :D

Great video! It would be interesting for me as a Czech if you'd make a video about the Tatra T3 trams in former USSR. In the Czech Republic, T3s are knows as reliable and sturdy machines heck the capital city of Prague still has over 400 units, so it would be interesting to know how those over 11 000 trams worked in Russia.

9:15 Were they really such a breakthrough? Japan is full of those. In fact, the remaining four 161-series units in Osaka and Sakai are not only single-carriage double-ended cars, but, with them currently doing their 93rd year of service, are the oldest tramcars in regular service. To put it into perspective, these trams were already 35 years old when KTM-5's started production. And they're still in almost mint condition.
Most pre WW2 trams were single-car double-ended models.
2-sided cabin tram-cars were never very common in Russia 'coz almost every city with trams had (and has) place for tram turnarounds. Probably the most common 2-sided trams are in Saint-Petersburg

Great story, well told. I had seen film of the KTM-5 cars operating in many cities, but did not know their history. I have even more respect for these robust vehicles, the citizens who travel daily on them, and the people who maintain them and keep them going.
Thank you for the video! It’s very interesting to learn about the tram and all the various cities in the Russia and other countries which use it. If you get a chance, you should check out the history of the interurban trolleys that would run for many miles at high speeds (even up to 140 kph!) between cities in America during the early 1900’s. There are only a couple of them left.
Набережные Челны - один из самых удобных городов в которых я бывал! Это довольно современная и удобная система обозначений домов, где каждый дом в городе имеет свой оригинальный номер и не привязан к названию улицы. И названия улиц там были всегда))
Спасибо за видео, посмотрел оба видеоролика с субтитрами. Я живу на Урале и в моем городе ходят как трамваи, так и маршрутки, трамваи есть как советские показанные в видео, так и современные. Хорошо было бы если новых трамваев еще больше было бы, еще недавно меняли трамвайные пути, это тоже хорошо.

Скучаю по теплым сиденьям-черпакам! С мороза сесть замерзшей частью тела на горячее и ноги у тена погреть такое удовольствие было, как баня. В трамвае холодно, а ценной части тела тепло.

Wonderful story and pictures, both episodes, I learned a lot. I only took a KTM5 once while I was in Biysk, Siberia. It is true, they are mostly found in remote provincial towns. In Barnaul I didn't see any, they seem to prefer CKD T3SU and T6B5SU.
Barnaul (and also Novokuznetsk) are the easternmost cities with Tatra T3!

Pityfully, citizens of many US towns can only imagine aboute 'unbelievable' 40 minutes frequency public transportation. I am not mentioning condition of US urban rail transport just in a manner of courtesy.

@Matt We know. Most european adults too. But we, who are not adults yet, need a good public transport. And also, (speaking of prague where I live) most adults living near tram or metro use them to travel to the center. It's faster, more ecologic, you don't need to drive, you can reed or work. Also, If everybody would Instead of Trams and Metro use their own car, the traffic would absolutely fail. European cities are just not prepared for cars.
@@70M45-c9r American cities that arent completely car dependent are also better to live in, as you can walk for daily errands.

In Perm we have around 100 trams still running, КТМ is one of them, tram sistem in my city is almoust 100 years old. I also dreamed of becoming a tram driver in my childhood😅
Привет из Челябинска! В нашем городе самый большой парк КТМ-5 в мире, их около 160 единиц. У нас была целая программа по превышению КТМ в низкопольный трамвай. Целых 5 лет из депо выходили очень красивые и аккуратные модификации, но последний, полностью низкопольный кузов, из-за повреждений рамы так и не был собран в полноценную машину и списан. Но сейчас даже у нас (а видео из нашего города было в первой части, когда вы говорили про невозможность эксплуатации новых трамваев на кривых и старых рельсах) КТМ-5 нашлась замена. По заказу Москвы на Кировском заводе был разработан трамвай 71-628 или КТМ-28 (в период выпуска КТМ-5 в Советском Союзе изменились правила присвоения названий трамваям и он успел получит имя 71-605, следующий стал 71-608 и так далее). Так вот один опытный КТМ-28 привезли на испытания в Челябинск, прежде чем отправить 90 его собратьев в Москву. Губернатор Челябинской области проехался на нем и решил купить 30 таких трамваев в наш город. В другом городе-рекордсмене по числу КТМ-5 в регулярной эксплуатации, Магнитогорске, что на юге Челябинской области руководство Металлургического комбината давно купило для города новые вагоны КТМ-19 и КТМ-23, а также машины производства завода УралТрансМаш из Екатеринбурга. Теперь кварталы четырехэтажного Соцгорода (Социалистического Города), спроектированного в 1929 году немецкими и американскими архитекторами, объезжает не угловатый КТМ-5, а его потомки
Челябинск хорош! Мне понравилось в каком состоянии там вагоны, интерьерные детали сохранились, я эту табличку с датой выпуска, например, не видел сто лет. Только красят их как-то странно у вас 😃

Watching this video, I've asked my GF to take me to a tram ride today in Minsk. My curiosity in tram ignited when I saw them for the first time in Moscow 3.5 years ago. We don't have trams in India anymore and I'm very excited to travel one today. :)

In claiming that the KTM 5 is the most numerous tram class in the world, one should bear in mind that the Tatra T4 was identical to the Tatra T3, except that it was a narrower version for certain cities (2.2 rather than 2.5 metres wide). Only for this reason did it have a different class number. The combined total of T3/T4 trams produced was 16,748 including 122 unpowered trailers. It's a pedantic point of course and both the Russian and the Czech tram hold an honorable place at the top of the world statistics board.

People who work in public transit tend to be some of the most dedicated people, comparable to medical workers, because they know that what they're doing is vital to society even if no one appreciates it and as such they work incredibly hard to keep things running. In Denmark DSB has been keeping the now over 30 year old IC3s running and up to date to the point where foreigners are shocked at how comfortable these regular commuter trains are, having levels of comfort that sometimes exceed high speed rail in other countries.
I did actually ride these in Moscow when I was a kid in the beginning of this century... Good memories. Had to really convince my grandma to ride one because our route would be well enough covered by metro :D
