Okay,, those who buy 68 pieces of clothing per year have a severe spending problem. Seriously, I buy maybe 4 tops, 2 pairs of pants, and a bag of 8 socks and 5 pairs of boxers each year. No way in Hell, Heaven, or Earth should anyone need to buy that much unless they're upper class.
I get 1-2 pairs of pants, 1-2 shirts ( 2-3 shirts are given to me cause family cast offs YAY) and like 12 pairs of socks cause I walk the sheet out of those socks
I got so many pairs of jeans i just keep reusing so i never run out... but 68 is a pretty insane number considering i buy like 1 pant per year and then reuse until Armageddon
This is absolutely true. Even from the same brands, I've seen how much they've gone to trash in recent years. Back even as late as 2008-2009, I could buy a shirt and wear it at least weekly for 3+ YEARS. Nowadays, shirts from those same brands are lucky to last me 6 MONTHS.
Have not seen the video jet, but! As a tailor I can pretty much tell you outright - 90% it's the seams - quality clothes are sewn twice and many modern clothes aren't, they rip apart way to easy . Confection clothes don't fit propperly because almost noone looks like how the "average" calculated measurements make it seem. Slimfit is a sin against regular human body proportions. And most of all - because we life in such fast times no business is intrested in making stable and good fitting clothes because "next year we need to sell more" and the people need an incentive to buy new ones.
Would a tailor be able to improve the fit of say some Walmart brand jeans? The material isn't too bad but the fitting is idk boxy? I Feel square when working lol
So I started buying higher quality and having it tailored. My tailor gave me a crash course on how to buy clothes and what to look for. He also referred me to peollw who fix leather goods and shoes. All in all I'm thrilled with my decision to do better with my choices and because my clothes are tailored for me I look better
I don't even remember what brand most of the clothes I wore as a kid were. Nor the clothes I wear now, for that matter. I just buy whatever Walmart has if it looks good.
Last year, I think I bought a jacket because it was Black Friday and it really was 50% off (it's a good jacket so I was ok with paying more as it's quality material, I like the colour and it's a good brand, also, most importantly it has a lot of pockets and will keep me warm during these nonexistent winters), maybe some underwear, maybe socks and a t-shirt. In all that's fewer than 10 items. Who TF buys so many pieces of clothing that the _average_ comes down to 68 pieces? The quality aspect of clothing is also problematic. I see signs of wear on my underwear and my pants at the same place... Probably because I bought them both at the same place... Should probably start buying things elsewhere...

I have denim jeans that I'd bought almost 30 years ago, that I still wear regularly, which are in almost as good shape as they were then...except for a little fading. And those are Member's Mark, a Sam's Club brand. I'd bought them when the Sam's Club opened near us, back in '96. I've gotten big brand names (Levi's, etc.) in the last decade, that have already worn out and been garbaged.

I wear a lot of vintage suits from the early 1950s and the difference in tailoring quality between an OTR suit today and one from 1951 is insane. Largely because a man in 1951 would expect to wear a suit every day, so he expected it to be comfortable and allow a large range of movement. Even the suits from the 80s she points out were already of lower quality, that was the decade low armholes became standard.

So, I spent like $400 two suits back in 2003 when I graduated high school and travelled to Asia I had them made for me and I painstakingly care for and maintain them and they get so many compliments. Meanwhile my designer stuff is cheaper quality and cost more
