It's great to read so many positive comments. I so tired of the naysayers that say this won't work that won't work. Anybody that is good at their art is dangerous, regardless of system. There are so many people who want to spar. Sparring is not self defense, it is a social confrontation. Anybody who "fights" are not in the real world. I am 70 and i'm not fighting anyone. However, in an asocial situation where my life depends on action, I will get them down in 3 seconds or i'm dead.
Great practical stuff ,sir! Thanks a lot for emphasizing the the closed hands and the circular motion. The basics. Many times the difference between life and death.
As someone with no training and using your videos for educational instruction , I think it's is a great decision to incorporate beginners into your videos. Your definitely know your audience Lenny / Bob. Thanks
This guy and Christain Tissier are the best aikido guys I have ever seen. Tissier is more traditional where this sensei is very practical. Excellent teacher
Brother, this is badass and I'm absorbing it like a sponge. After watching your video's, I practice the technique and incorporate into my own martial skills and practice. Keep doing what you do...your are a credit to aikido and if anyone say's different they just don't know what they're talking about.
Love it! Great teaching! This is something I stress at all levels/ divisions from our childrens/ youth and adults, even in our free trial class as they apply, the crucial importance of Ukemi and Attack evasions (aka) RAM as you call it! One thing I observed was Dana's line of attack was continually being swayed over, and her Tai no henko (tenkan) was stepping rather than sliding, but you addressed that, I appreciate how you encourage your students, Sensei Larry didn't give affirmation easily, but he was quick to correct us and slammed us around like a rag doll, totally unrelated to what he is teaching us at that moment. Well as you use Soto Giri, ya I learned it as Tenkan, so I began teaching it so, but the deflection you call Kitiage, I just called a variant of tenkan as with Suriage and tsukiage as variants with Irimi deflections, only unique deflection is Uke Negashi, anyhow, loved this video hope you will also demo Variable Ukemi besides the hard ones, like the fundamental rolls and some Shikko wasa, looking forward to what you have in store, always anticipating every video you put up, I have been sharing a lot and a couple of my serious students have subscribed to your channel God Bless my friend!
Yes I do my Friend! Masakatsu Dojo, School for Aikido, I started it technically in 1999, it began with kids of my co workers in large living rooms, then at Churches as Ministries in Multipurpose halls, to subrenting a dance studio, and now relocated to a cross fit gym. I am a strong follower of Jesus Christ, but I have done Aikido for nearly twice as long so I do this as a Ministry and an official Community Center. I also have a work background in Loss Prevention, Private Security, trained with Military Police, local LAPD and Sherriffs Dept as well with some SWAT guys, as I have been sharing with you, I trained under Shihan Larry Reynosa for 6 years, among my other prior 16 years under Shihan Thomas Makiyama who founded an Organization unfortunately I am one of a handful still keeping his teachings today, he died in 2005, so I collaborated Keijutsukai with Makoto Aikido as my own, Masakatsu Aikido, I teach the Bible as it correlates the concepts of spiritual battles with actual battles, lots of great warriors in combat in Biblical era!
Wow, that's fascinating! I'm becoming more spiritually Christian myself. Congratulations and God Bless You, brother. Always Psalm:121----The Ultimate Ki-Extension!! :)
Lenny, as usual, great instruction. You do a great job of not just explaining the deflection itself (the how) but WHAT you are trying to accomplish and WHY. Great in depth description of the fine points of the hand position, where the deflection goes and what your readiness needs to be on completion. Great Video!
S a relatively new Akidoka Im enjoying your content and the techniques and concepts deminstrated maje a lot of sense. I lije seeing a White belt student demonstratingbin this video. Above and beyond the traditional techniques bIm studying in rhe dojo here in Australia but more is better and I hope I xan apply the fundamental principles outlined on you channel. Keep up the great work, thanks Sensei.
What an awesome video! I'll train this. Thank you so much for these videos that show self-defence Aikido! I've been so much searching for stuff like this. Thanks a thousand times! I wish I could train in your dojo. :)
Keep up the great work Sensei. I've implemented an entire curriculum on hand deflections for my students based on your training. Thx again and I'm with you on #TakingAikidoBack
Unfortunately my Sensei decided to shut down our dojo after 5 years of service for personal reasons; no other Aikido dojo close enough to continue my training. As sempai of the school I decided to start an local Aikido club with former students. I was a bit nervous at first, never thinking I would be starting something on my own, but the students are well received and enjoy my teaching style; lots of practical application. Your videos has been God sent. Been contemplating your paid video training to aide in my teaching. Speaking of that I assume the online training goes much more in depth?
Ronnie Cola oh god yes it does. There are a lot of basic fundamentals that are very detailed. We have about 100 or more online classes. I'm working on an organization that people like yourself to affiliate their club or dojo with me and my aikido. we'll be providing an organization with kyu testing and Dan testing to my methodology. as well as quality of our aikido training standards, with none of the political bs. with in that we're producing a distant learning online program for everyone.
You have reached your friend limit on Facebook so I'm a follower now of both your personal page and Rogue Warriors Combative Concepts. Cant wait for your organization to come into fruition and the details that follow. Keep up the great work Brother, hopefully we can meet soon
Thank you Mr. lennys sly i am opening my own dojo because of the misunderstanding that you clarify in your videos you are more realistic. I will integrate your explanations into my club so that people do not flee Aikido because of its traditional side that is not always understood
Thanks Mr. Lenny Sli for a very effective way of teaching this particular arm deflection technique using your students because now I saw the mistakes as a student that I too made just like the young lady and then you corrected without taking any of the real time pressure away and she improved almost immediately! could you please do this with your other deflection techniques? again thanks
Ur right Lenny. I try to stay prepared. And if they say that's paranoid well maybe they never was betrayed by ppl or attacked blind not expecting it like I have
I see the improvement, Sly and your other dojo mates have to be plus for learning and instruction..you look great and if you get a chance look at vid you really pick up speed during the technique ...looking good and getting better..keep up the good work, take care and see you on your next training vid!!
good to see the teaching style and a different take on a video with you teaching both Dana and the audience. can I pose a question? I am in a discussion around a technique called ganseki otoshi with a higher grade in my organisation. there was a video posted showing someone doing a fireman type lift and throwing them over (almost like a koshinage but from on the shoulders). from what I have been shown in the past ganseki otoshi was done with ukes back sliding across your back (usually using the back of their gi) and then a lot of Internet searches shown it as a technique using your arm hooked around ukes arm in a form of arm bar. can I ask is this a technique you have come across? and is there any chance of you covering it in a video? many thanks. martyn kai shin kai, UK
One more thing: Is their anyone in South FL doing anything CLOSE to what you're doing with Tenshin Aikido? Also would love to see you, Calderon Sensei, and the folks from Aikidoflow do a seminar. :)

Hi Sly Sensei. Great explanation of that kokyu hand angle. Just two suggestions/questions. I thought it was tai sabaki, not te. And I've seen the thumb out thing before, but I have also been recently told to not have it out for the same reasons as keeping the fingers closed up. Your thoughts?
