Shatterhand (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Jaleco's 1991 NES action game, Shatterhand.
Shatterhand is a "westernized" face-lift of the Famicom game Tokkyuu Shirei Solbrain. It's a classic Natsume platformer, only now starring an 80s fashion hero who rocks massive BluBlockers, a Marty McFly vest, and rolled-cuff jeans. He also can destroy pretty much anything with his fists, hence the name Shatterhand.
Anything includes walls, people's faces, and bullets. That's right - he can punch gunfire right out of the air. How cool is that?
He can also summon a semi-autonomous flying doid to fight with him by collecting three alpha and/or beta icons. The order you grab the icons in determines which robot shows up, and there's a good variety to choose from. My favorite is the one that fires mines, but they're all pretty useful.
If you manage to grab the same combination of icons a second time, and if your droid is still intact, you'll transform into a super robot thing that shoots fireballs. If you can reach a boss in this form, you'll be able to cut him down without too much trouble.
The gameplay is fast and very smooth, and there's a lot of variety here for a game that ultimately boils down to running to the right while violently flailing at anything that moves. One level allows you to flip gravity (like Metal Storm), while another has a floor that pushes you toward walls of spikes as missiles go flying by. The droids give you some interesting options in approaching some of the stages' hairier chokepoints (if you're fighting in close quarters, always go for the ricochet shot!), and the boss designs do some neat things to keep it all feeling fresh.
Shatterhand certainly has its moments of teeth-grinding frustration, but overall, the difficulty level is very manageable. The game isn't a cakewalk, but the controls are usually rock solid (save for those wall grab/jump segments, argh!) and the stage designs usually avoid throwing too many things at you at once. It requires a bit of practice and the development of a few strategies, but it's never painful in the way that Ninja Gaiden, Batman, and Contra all had the tendency to be: if you were good at NES games back in the day and had rented Shatterhand on a Friday night, there was a good chance that you'd have seen the ending before it went back. It's not super easy (like Jackie Chan) nor will it make you want to snap a controller in half (like Adventure Island). I thought that it struck a comfortable balance between challenge and fun, and mechanically it's of a level of quality generally reserved for the toppest-tier Konami, Sunsoft, and Capcom games.
It also competes in that same league with its graphics and sound. The killer intro and the stage select scenes are ridiculously overblown (I mean that as a big compliment), the stage backgrounds are loaded with little animated elements and feature some of the best looking parallax scrolling I've seen on the NES, and the fluidity of the player sprite's animation is impressive. And that soundtrack! It stands out - even among the Natsume NES titles - for just how well done it is. It's dramatic, punchy (no pun intended), and drives a pretty hard beat non-stop. By the time you've beaten it, several of these themes will be permanently etched into your memory.
This is a title that deserves all the praise that it's given. The gameplay and the level of polish applied here places Shatterhand firmly in the same league as the NES's best action games, and if you don't love it, I have but one question for you: have you played it?
(This is a replacement for an older video I had up. It was only 480p so the picture was a bit muddy, and since the encode for this playthrough is 60fps, sprite flickering no makes things invisible. Much better now!)

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocom...) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
It might not enjoy the recognition and fame that comes with the Contra and Ninja Gaiden brands, but make no mistake. Shatterhand is at level with the NES's best action titles.
*_"Shatterhand"_* on NES. Developed by *_"Natsume"_* and published by *_"Jaleco"_* .
This game is freaking *AWESOME!*
From that cool still of our hero punching a foe in the face, to the end of the game, you'll see that this is another _"Natsume"_ highlight. Next to games like, *_"Wild Guns"_* , *_"Power Rangers"_* , and my favorite game by them, *_"Pocky & Rocky"_* . It's practically unreal how underrated *_"Natsume's"_* NES games are, since when most refer to that company, they usually refer to their SNES titles (🤔... *_"Much like I... Just... Did... MOVING ON!"_* ).
I'd like to briefly mention that this game was originally based on a Japanese Live-action TV Show titled, 特救指令ソルブレイン, ( *_"Tokkyū Shirei Soruburein"_* ). _"Super Rescue Solbrain"_ , was basically all about police mechs defending Tokyo from crime syndicates in place of the _"Winspector"_ Police after they left Japan to fight crime in France. The show ran for 53 episodes.
As a kid, obtaining Japanese games, I would sometimes love to hang out with my Japanese friends from back then and watch lots of Anime, and these Live-action shows (I think I remember seeing the weird Japanese Spider-Man show). I saw *_"Solbrain"_* and thought that it was a decent show.
Then we got the Famicom game, and we had lots of fun with it... and jammed out to the kick-ass soundtrack. (😁 Ah, what great memories games like this and *_"Super Mario World"_* constantly bring me.)
POSITIVES
• *Great Graphics* (They're dark, gritty, and look great. It kinda reminds me of *_"Batman: The Video Game"_* on NES.)
• *This MUSIC* (This is easily one of my favorite NES soundtracks of all-time. Every song in this game is super catchy and just awesome all-around. )
• *Fun Gameplay* (This is a pretty good platformer from the 90s NES era. What I like most about this game other than the music, is that helper robot mechanic. Not only do said robots come with a variety of weapons to use, but collecting 3 of the same letters twice turns you into a powerful robotic force to be reckoned with... for about 20 seconds. This form *DECIMATES* most bosses.)
NITPICKS
• *Time Loss as the 20 Second Robot* (ANYTIME you get hit while in this form, you lose 1 second of time. It's mildly annoying.)
Final Rating: 9.8/10
This game is an absolute must if you're looking for a great NES platformer from a competent developer.
I would also recommend the Japanese version for if you want to fight crime as a Robocop-esque robot like the Japanese show it's based on... and to play that Japanese exclusive carnival stage that this version doesn't have.
You figure *_that_* out.
Tottaly agree with you! i wish i had played this in its time. It looks like the game that would ve been awesome for a friday night rent...
@@edge6441 Oh yeah. This also would've been the game where you would try to get all of your friends to play it because it's so awesome.
Thanks for the upload. This was my favorite game on the NES when I was a kid.
I spent almost my entire life looking for this video game to remember it again
You remember Legend of Kage?
Me too!
One of the unsung games of the NES. I really wish this had become a franchise and gotten a sequel on the SNES.
Had Shatterhand became a franchise to the point where a sequel was released for the SNES back in mid 1990s, I'm more then certain said sequel alone would be utterly impressive, a huge improvement to the original game.

The soundtrack of this game was awesome
Nothing yells more "90's video game" than games where you were a "Bad sonofagun" punching everyone in sight.
"he can punch gunfire right out of the air" - awesome, I never noticed that when I played the game.
A similar feature is in River City Ransom, where you can kick crates and tires. RCR actually has the most advanced and realistic physics system of all NES games. It's the Half-Life 2 of NES.
*_"Shatterhand"_* is one of my favorites. The graphics, the awesome music, and the gameplay make it the best *_"Natsume"_* game on the NES.
Hell yes. Same here, even though i don't remember beating it.
Let's also not forget "Shadow of the Ninja", the other, obscure, yet immensely awesome, Natsume game
For me, few things in video gaming match the goosebumps I got the first time I saw the stage select screen emerge after beating the first level. It was like, 'Okay, NOW the real gaming begins.' It's such a tiny thing but the way that comes up just sets the entire tone of the game so nicely. Definitely a classic, westernized or not.
I felt -and still feel - the same way: at the time my brother and I had the chance to explore this fabulous game, that stage select screen was something that let us with an awe expression: it was misterious, technological, futuristic.. this game is a something I really feel thankfully to have played during my childhood... and in my teen years.. okey, okey: yes! I accept it!: I still play it! 😅
This was from a Japanese tokatsu.. Windspector or something.. Both were awesome
Tokkyu Shirei Solbrain to be exact.
I played a bootleg version of this game (robocop) when I was a kid, glad to finally find this gem, been searching it for a long time

This looks a lot like Batman for the NES
As a huge fan of contra, battletoads, return of the joker and ninja gaiden, I must confess Ive never heard of this game before. I looks like the greatest game on 8 bits.
The first time I played this game at my cousins house I was blown away like never before in my life, it felt like it was a SNES game and I couldn't help but marvel that the NES could achieve that kind of graphical and playable quality.
For years I waited for a sequel (SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii) and my illusions fell to the bottom when Jaleco went bankrupt in 2014.
Some time later I learned that a new developer called City Connection Games rose from the ashes of Jaleco and went back to programming games, on their Japanese website you can see that they recovered the rights to all Jaleco games (including Shatterhand), I asked them on their UA-cam channel in all possible languages if they will release a sequel but they have never responded to me, I don't know what to do to pressure them to give me an answer.
Yeah, late NES was really good. If you put the 101 games that both got a release on the NES and the SNES side by side, you'll be amazed more than half of them are clearly better on the NES, and only 1/6th is a clear victory for the SNES. Sure, the graphics are more detailed on the SNES, but the NES palette has its charm, and most of the times the SNES action is dumbed down because the CPU could not handle too many enemies. So NES versions offer a better challenge.
@@2kBofFunyeah a ton of games that were released for both systems, both versions usually sucked. A game was fun, the Snes had the better version, like Alladin and Hook suck ass on nes, but the Snes versions are fun.
@@yeahyeahwowman8099 Fun you name Alladin, I like that much better on the NES.
No matter how hard I think about this, Shatterhand is one of those games that deserves a comeback. I would actually see a sequel for this game where the character is allowed to buy upgrades and customize his robot armor.
A modern version of Shatterhand would be AMAZING. Like half Subnautica, half Titanfall 2 with a splash of platforming.
It would be a cool idea. I also can imagine in a modern Shatterhand how you can also give Steve all kinds of interesting ways to fight in addition to upgrades
Tengo Project aka Natsume is remaking many of older titles, don't be surprised if they remake Shadow of the Ninja, Power Blade or Shatterhand.
@@franciscor390You're a psychic apparenty
@@franciscor390 you must have seen the future bro. Here we are (08/24/24) and I have the demo for Shadow of the Ninja on my Switch waiting for the full version so I can get it.
Love the old school music and sound fx! Is this made by the same company that made TMNT and Castlevania?
Yes music wise it is largely the same composers.
Never heard of this game before, but it's a gem! It has the Megaman vibes. The music is off the chain. The game is just smooth. I love the graphics, everything is top notch.
Even on an emulator, it's still worth playing today. Still challenging, still rewarding. It's one of the classics.
Shatterhand is mind-shattering! The developers at Natsume (and Jaleco as the publisher) are obviously being this one! It has the same basic look and the feel and control are reminiscent of their earlier NES game Shadow of the Ninja, another awesome game. The graphics are well-done, the control is excellent, and the music rocks! I am very rarely let down when I pop a Jaleco game into my NES. The gameplay for this game is similar to Capcom's Mega Man, Bionic Commando, DuckTales pogo jump, and Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden series. Shatterhand's release falls between Natsume's action-platformers Power Blade and Power Blade 2. Second, the game's publisher, Jaleco, was not exactly a big 3rd party. They had several hits back in the day. I know their Bases Loaded baseball franchise for Nintendo being pretty popular, and they also are known for doing the NES port of the PC adventure game Maniac Mansion, The Last Ninja, Cyberball, Rampart, Bravo Jaleco!
The best game in NES
The Americanised version of Tokyuu Shirei Solbrain, a Power Rangers like TV show from Japan. The Solbrain version 2 different bosses. Never played Shatterhand but Solbrain was my favourite video game growing up.
There is some evidence within the Solbrain version that Shatterhand is the original game, and that they changed it into a Solbrain game once they had the license
@@martinefrensoquigomez7835 good to know
I loved this game. It was in the cyborg Vann dam era to me... this blaster master... oh and the gauntlet games... good times good times.
I spent hours playing this game and working on the companion combos I was particularly interested in the lil bot that tossed the bouncing blades around
do you know who composed this soundtrack? It’s very megaman-y
I’m hearing lots of contra in this.
Game Freaks - i see - a contrarian!!

My fking childhood in a flesh... OMG THANK YOU. THAAAAANK YOU
Tokkyuu Shirei: Solbrain is the original
Wahhh nice gameplay 😍
You can taste that Natsume goodness in this one, excellent soundtrack, great level design, and faster pacing. A game many years ago I thought was a great Jaleco game, turns out it was a great Natsume game instead that Jaleco's name just happened to be on for the US release.
It's awesome, isn't it? The Japanese probably felt that way about it too, what with it being published by Bandai over there.
@@NintendoComplete Bandai, big yikes. Jaleco started to turn around their poor rep later on by releasing better games, Bandai just kind of.....attached their names to games others made well after, like the Natsume made Power Rangers games Banpresto made.
@@Bloodreign1 You know, it's funny. I'm not sure if Jaleco developed it themselves (or maybe they just appropriated large chunks of Natsume's code for things like physics and conttrols?), but I've often thought about the many ways The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles feels similar to Shatterhand. I thought Vice: Project Doom felt a bit similar as well, though to a much lesser extent.
@@NintendoComplete Rushing beat is cool from Jaleco too, I loved the groin kick reactions hahaha, just got frustrated when the girl just fell instead of a proper reaction hahaha
@@NintendoComplete Jaleco didn't develop this game. They just published it for the North American release.
THE definition of cyberpunk. Maybe Super Contra 6 too.
Natsume had some really great games back in the day. Even some of their lesser known, Japanese titles like Chōjin Sentai Jetman or
Idol Hakkenden had amazing music and were fun in one way or another. Hope you play Mitsume ga Tooru at some point too, that's one I really liked!
I love *_"Idol Hakkenden"_* . That was actually one of my favorite Famicom games to play as a kid back when I was studying Japanese.
Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals is still my favorite RPG ever.
Bad ass😎 this game rules.
This looks really cool for an nes game
Believe it or not, it's very possible Shatterhand is the originally intended version, and Solbrain is the face-lift
Doesn't make the base game any less awesome though, this brings back some seriously sweet memories
I LOVE this game. It also was on the "easy" side of all those semi-impossible games Nintendo used to produce at that time so it was , and still is, really enjoyable.
Collecting different powerups and exploring which combinations gave you what superpowers AND the epic music made this such a great game.
damn this MF hits hard!
btw awesome cover art, NOT!
The only thing better than Giant Fighting Robots is Punching Robots IN THE HECKIN' FACE
Dude!!! I loved that dam game!! Everything about it was cool!!
This video is awesome.
Never play this version , played & playing soul brain .
I had that version as a kid, and saw the TV show it was based on as well. Both were pretty cool.

My boy is blocking them bullets with his arm.
On a side note I'm genuinely blow away by this, some of the animations are almost 16-bit quality worthy. Had I known about, had I seen this game back then, had I played it... I think I would have genuinely _begged_ my mom to get it for me. It would have blown my brain out. My local rental store didn't have it, otherwise I would have instantly noticed (especially with a front cover art like that).
And I also just checked on eBay, this game easily goes $100+ for a loose cart, CIB goes for like $250+.
Too bad the EU version is so rare, you pay 100€ with ease. Get Power Blade instead, that one is very similar and only 20 bucks.
Помню эта игра была с Бэтменом на Нес там снимался Майкл Китон снимался и в первом уровне и последнем была та самая музыка / саундтрек .
Me: sergeant! Prepare for this important mission everyone depends on you save thousands of lives Defeat the Metal Command and Stop the evil Sergeant Gus Grover 41:00, Good luck sergeant.
Steve Hermann (Shatterhand): ...
You did know that Shaterhand is a pirated copy of Super Rescue Solbrain right?
It's not hate but I would have liked us all to be a single community united by the original version of the game.
I still love you guys.
Lol I tried for a long time to remember what this game is and UA-cam just recommended it to me. Of course it doesn't look like I remember it, but still good
I looked up this game because of the AVGN's critique of the box art for this game. And I think that's why it didn't get the recognition it deserves. Its box art is kinda stupid.
Nice eeee super mega hiper nice videooooo
Graphics and sound are great....but there's no real challenge, almost no enemies... like that had to be sacrificed for the other stuff
У меня оно было с названием Робокоп 3. И оно лагало после босса. Как же я хотел его пройти....
In Mexico mi dad bought it me in a bootleg stand with the title "Robocop 3" and when we played it we loved it............but no robocop at all
I'm prefer solbrain
great game but did you guy know this game part of Powerblade trilogy?
Loved this game. Rented it once and breast it but will never forget the fun I had.
U can still play this game on your mobile with emulator
It's like one of those made up video games in a movie that look so awesome, but this really exists.
Reminds me of batman nes

Gosh, what happened to Area C in the US version? The heck is this? Censorship? Just why?
make a movie from this game :D
but with the musik transform in to higher bit new age
The bgm and sound effect is very similar to ninja gaiden.

hi friend, Yes I remember this game, played for a long time, thank you like
it surely looks like a modern indie game based on 8-bit style
Wow, Jaleco outdid themselves, what a game. NES pushed to its limits.
In India, i got a duplicate copy of this game called "Robocop 3". And I could never find this game online after that
Now I finally know the real name
Shatterhand 🔥🔥
@@snehilkankran5492 glad you found it, it's an amazing game.

This game is fuggin awesome!
This was my shit growing up such a good game I miss these days
This game probably deserved better cover art
This played almost like a Sunsoft game.
so now I see where cyber shadow took influence from.
This game has an interesting localization because it was Natsume developing the game and the original version was based on a Japanese Sci-Fi T.V. show the international audiences didn't understand. Not only that, the carnival level was a submarine level because the carnival level was assumed to be too girly for international audiences.
This whole game is super solid and that intro is the greatest
Such a great game, and Natsume was such a great developer on the NES. Sadly, I didn't know about it when it was current. I found out about Shatterhand many years later. What was so cool about that was I saw a video review of the game and thought it looked really good and had this feeling it would be an amazing game. A lot of times, that's really hard to tell without actually feeling how the game plays, but Shatterhand was as good as I hoped it would be. Because of the focus on punching, but also the graphical style and music quality, a lot of people say it reminds them of Batman, and I would agree with those. Playing one makes me want to play the other, and both Shatterhand and Batman are very high on my list of favorites for the NES.

how the fuck is a game where the protagonist can punch through bullets ""the worst thing ever""? id like some elaboration.

Never heard of this one until just now. Seems like a solid game, I bet it was held back by that cover art.
Great game! Reminds me Batman for NES, Powerblade etc. Nice visuals, solid gameplay.

When Chuck Norris plays NES, he plays Shatterhand.
It was one of the best games NES had, with so many game mechanics and fun game play
That Area B track is just, MMM.
So many ~spicy~ tunes.

oh man i used to play this game and double dragon a lot what an awesome game!
Have you done a Rival Turf? That is also a Jaleco game and was a “buy a Super Nintendo get a free game”,bundle!
I have, check out my SNES playlist.
finalmente eu encontrei hahahaha
remember soulbrain
I still remember how I got some weird copy of Solbrain as a kid. Think it was either hacked or just busted, because the game was insanely hard even in the first round and after you beat Area A it skips you to Area F, not giving you an option to stage select. In the end of Area F awaited the immortal robo samurai and I was forever stuck fighting him, haha! It was much later I found the Shatterhand version and completed it. Amazing game and deserves more recognition for sure
