What if the attic is enclosed and you have no access and you don't know if the squirrels are still inside and just being quiet? This happened to me and then they chewed through the wood and aluminum flashing I used and did more damage. Then I had to close it up again. Actually I have another question: Can squirrels climb up inside a 2" x 3" downspout? How about the outside? Thanks.
What were the mothballs for and how long has they been up in the gutter?
The squirrels get inside the home when there's a gap between the fascia and roof sheathing. Sometimes they chew through the fascia. Squirrels, birds and most other critters hate the scent of mouth balls.
Unfortunately..... right now , with the 16 inches of ice and snow I have on my roof , i have to wait till summer because there is nothing I can do
They got in somehow !

This was a tip that I got from a local exterminator when I was having squirrel problems in my attic apartment when I first moved out on my own. The landlord refused to hire an expert so I decided to call around and quickly found out that spring is an impossible time of year to get exterminators to show up. It worked so well that I have been passing this along too.
