When flowers first came out, I picked it up at my local record store. I still have that old Mono, it still plays perfect. It is a crisp listen. Good vid.
I used to think the early Beatles albums were better than the early Stones, but now I'm re-thinking that. The Rolling Stones mono version, their first album, sounds amazing! It opens with a wildly driving Route 66 cover, and the guitar work is crystal clear and very competent.
Let It Bleed mono is a fold down mix, not dedicated. So if you use a Y adapter on and play the stereo version it will sound just like the mono version. Sympathy For The Devil was the last song to have a dedicated mono mix.
Hi there, Love your informative review. I find your reviews of great value to me... myself being a music aficionado. Your knowledge of all music is pretty apparent. I have this box and I have to agree that they sound amazing as David Fricke says. I agree with all you said. I don't have the Beatles mono box and I am still hesitating on purchasing that. I love the mix of their earlier albums. Yes, it sounds like Mick is right next to you and the music is well produced.... a lot details come to the fore. I am still enamored with this box... and will enjoy it for a long time. Such a great catalog. Thank you to all involved for releasing this. Thanks for the review. Keep them coming. Tino
The early Stones and Beatles recordings were recorded to be heard in Mono most people would have listened to the albums on a mono Dansette portable type record player, radio or radiogram Decca and EMI records later mixed them for stereo as more people began buying stereo equipment which is why they sound a bit weird in stereo with vocals and instruments separated into very left and right channels
Keep in mind, this Box Set has not been remixed but remastered in 2016, using the original master tapes. All Beatles In Mono Box Sets were made in Japan but not so with the Stones. In Japan, each album cover is 7" with a plastic record shape insert which holds the CD as if it were a jewel box. Each album has an adhesive plastic sleeve to protect the cover. The Japanese edition is long out of print with copies going for over $600.00 on eBay. Each disc is an SHM-CD, a proprietary technology unique to Japan and yes, they sound better. Next on the horizon is The 50th Anniversary SACD of Bob Ludwig's newly remastered "Let It Bleed" which will be released before Xmas.
Can you look at the SACD editions of The Rolling Stones 60’s output? Not having a SACD player to get the benefit of this format, I always wondered what I was missing? I read years ago that Keith Richards rated an earlier mix of ‘Have You Seen Your Mother Baby’ , which hasn’t officially seen the light of day. Always good to hear your opinion on the R.S Mono box.
Hey TJR, thanks for the great review of the RS mono box. I was inspired by your videos to pick this up. I've opted for the Japanese Limited edition. Also did a review of the packaging and linked to your video here from my YT channel. Rock On Bro!
TJR ' What I did with my Mono CD box set get those CDR color paper sleeves that Memorex puts out cot the fold top cover off and use them like a regular LP sleeve and they work and yes those plastic outer sleeved take up space I can barely close mine but the CD's and Album Jackets are protected . Keep Up The Good Work
A lot of disagreements, but I will mention Street Fighting Man - the single version (not "radio version" ) is a dense masterpiece, chilling and overwhelming. Stereo version on BB is equally great albeit quite different. Also the early albums are mostly a mixture of mono and stereo, as the 2003 Abkco cds indicate. The debut, and Out of Our Heads, are all mono. 12x5 and Now! are mostly stereo material recorded at Chess, and sound exquisite. I have a mono 12x5 lp and it is very good, but I prefer the (mostly) stereo. Also the Stones focused on the US market when making albums, unlike the Beatles. Who would put 'Going Home' in the middle of Aftermath? Rather than the end. This is partly because the RS recorded mostly in the US, especially up until Buttons.
Did you hear about the possible LP repress of this set? It appears to be out on Oct. 21st. Amazon UK, Spain and Italy have it up. Amazon UK and Spain want about $300 US, shipped. Basically what it originally cost in 2016. I pre-ordered at Amazon UK. No US or CAN Amazon links just yet.
Here’s one agonizing question I always had about the mono sets: WHY the hell cant sell those mono albums seperatly for all artists of the 60s?!? It would be be easier, waaaay more affordable. I was listening to the mono disc of the Sgt. Pepper box set. I loved as well as the Giles Martin stereo remix. I would love to get all The Beatles Mono albums but seperatly as I am not a rich person.
BTW I’m trying to find your review on the Beatles Mono box but I can’t find it. I tried to do a search on my iPad but it couldn’t comprehend “TJR Beatles Mono”.
I might still have the album with the band member’s faces framed by flowers. If it’s still here, you are welcome to it. I’ve been lugging my sister’s old records around for 40 years. She took some of them back last year. I’ll check when I have time.
I decided to skip this box set because most of their songs from 1963-1965 that I have on CD are already in mono. However, it would be interesting to hear "Aftermath", "Between The Buttons" and "Their Satanic Majesties Request" in mono. From what I have read "Beggars Banquet" and "Let It Bleed" are just fold-downs of the stereo masters. All except for the song "Sympathy For The Devil", which does have a dedicated mono mix.
TJR Sometimes I like to listen to music playing through my iPhone speaker as it helps me focus on what I would call "the mathematics" of music. Other times, I will casually listen to any of my many tube-based systems. And then there is that rare time that I sit in the sweet spot of my Man Cave System and really try to take in the whole musical experience. Hope you are able to take it to the highest level at least every once in a while...
Jeffrey Morrissey For me ( not that anyone asked ) but I recently purchased the Marantz CD 6006 CD player. It’s a relatively high end CD with a very good DAC digital to analog converter ( which after doing some research I found that a quality DAC is what makes one CD player better than another) it has a headphone jack and built in headphone amp. through which I listen to my Bose quite comfort headphones. The CD player also has a USB port for listening to my IPhone downloaded music. After many years of listening to music on my iPhone with cheap air buds a high quality CD player just what I needed to appreciate music again. I have a relatively cheap stereo amp and speakers that I plan on upgrading but until then listening to the Marantz CD 6006 with headphones is a great way to go
Well the mono box set sure looks interesting given that the original recording were done in this format. It's a great way to complete my Rolling Stones collection which is bereft of the early recordings. Thanks TJR !
What about the charge I've heard some fans say of,on some of the tracks they haven't done a made for mono mix and instead just folded down stereo mixes. Where as the Beatles were all the proper made for mono mixes, that's why they only did upto the White Album. I know these stones albums were originally mixed in mono but I've heard people say these particular versions in this boxset ate only stereo fold downs. On some not all.
I got this on Amazon today for $96. From Amazon itself, not a third-party seller. They also have the upcoming Bob Dylan "Rolling Thunder Revue - 1975 Live Recordings" 14 CD box set, to pre-order for $79, if you're interested.
Over all, I agree with your review and I now mostly prefer the mono to the stereo. Even though I grew up with the stereo versions. It was nice to revisit some of these fabulous albums wasn't it? I do wish you would have talked a little more about Beggars Banquet though. As always thanks for a great review.
Hi, only just found your channel and very interesting it is too. Having just been inspired to play the mono English Between the Buttons (a much maligned album I feel) I thought I'd let you know that here in England each album does have a plastic covering like the Beatles albums and also has a see through plastic sleeve for the cd to go in. Strange how they didn't do for the US.
Excellent review! I also feel they could've done better on the packaging. That set and the music certainly deserve better! Thanks again for giving us this great review video.
Thanks for a great review. I just scored it on eBay for $100 used, photos of it look legit. I’ve been looking for those glassine-style cd inserts that you held up, to protect the discs a la The Beatles box. Can you tell me where you found them?
I’m late to the party watching this video, and I didn’t read the other comments to see if this was already meantioned, but I suspect the reason the abkco 50th anniversary releases do not have any extra tracks has to do with the fact the Stones will not allow them to use them due to the legal struggles between them. Allan Klein owns these albums. The stones don’t want to beef these issues up because Klein gets more of their money
Thanks. I have no problem being corrected when I misspeak. But I find it petty how some commenters think they have to call my entire point or opinions into question just because I mis pronounced a name or (as in this case) got the title slightly wrong. I appreciate comments like yours that help but don't condemn. Thanks.
Thanks for such a detailed video. I think I will get this box sometime in the near future. BTW, have you heard the LP version of the Stones' mono recordings?
No I haven't heard the new LPs. I'm in the process of deciding on purchasing either the CD or LP box. I do have the Beatles Mono LP box and it does sound better than the mono CDs with respect to bass and the overall "drive" of the music.
I have not done one that specifically covers that. I did do a track by track analysis/review of the album itself that you can see here studio.ua-cam.com/users/video2OPBKY8GVLs/edit As for the my thoughts on the Stereo vs Mono. On this re issue set I enjoyed the mono version more. But not too long ago I picked up an original pressing of the stereo version and found that I liked it as much as I liked the Mono version of the re issue. You can see the video where I picked it up and discussed some of observations on it here. ua-cam.com/video/6m_sVUL0JaU/v-deo.html Thanks for watching.
@@TJRtheOriginal Thanks! I have the mono CD box and I prefer Satanic in mono so was just curious as to your thoughts on it as well because I find your analysis to usually be spot on. I'll check out those vids! Thanks again!
I prefer the U.S mono version of Aftermath as it sensibly moves Goin' home to the last track and Jagger's vocals are not so isolated. If you listen to Between the Buttons I'm pretty sure there are some alternate vocal takes or maybe it's just me.Excellent video by the way.
Thanks. I like the Mono version of Aftermath better too. I will have to check out the Stereo and mono versions of Between the Buttons a little closer now.
I thought Aftermat was recorded in true stereo, meaning that the mono version is simply a fold down. I don't know for sure, but i do know my US original stereo Aftermath sounds amazing
Great review, but a few things I’d take issue with: the presence of both U.K. and US Aftermath, though gives us too many duplicated tunes, ultimately makes sense. During my initial burst of Stones obsession, I thought this their first great album and a master work. It seems to have gotten lost in the depth of their canon though, and I don’t know if the material, top to bottom, is quite as classic as I once thought. There are many great tunes, but the average tunes don't seem as distinctive now. I grew up with the US version-and, like most of us, thought the U.K. version MUST be superior because,.....well, it was a snazzy, hard to find U.K. import, with a different sleeve pic and different tracks, and, well the British releases were always better, right?. Well, upon my own listening to the Box, I really have no problem admitting the US version is a better “program”, offering a more cohesive style/concept. Perhaps the U.K. has better sound, particularly on vinyl and the distinct artwork of each is debatable. I read another review that criticized the addition of the US album for unnecessary duplication. However, I think they are very different albums. The US version, in part because of the inclusion of Paint It Black, and closing the album with the brooding, meandering Going Home (could have been better without the sing-song refrain), is a much darker, pensive, trippier affair than its U.K. counterpart. I think the shorter track line up and the EXCLUSION of Brit pop tunes (What to Do, Out it Time, Take it or Leave It-all great songs but certainly not in the near-spooky, hazy-folk ambiance of the rest of the album) make for a better, more cohesive, listening experience. Comparatively, the U.K. album feels unfocused, disjointed and over-long. Much like your Buttons observation of how the exclusion of the double A sided single (Tuesday/Night Together) makes for a darker, more folky album (didn’t they have something better in the can than Amanda Jones?), in inclusion of Paint It Black and closing the album out with a long, tense jam, gives the album a very different quality. Also, I have always loved Flowers, criticized as a "non-album"-stray singles, b sides and LP track--the tunes actually play better in that program than even the previous releases. And Side 2 is, I think, a master stroke of then contemporary Brit pop and as melodic as Jagger/Richards ever got.
Consensus opinion was that the US labels’ reconfigured LPs of the British bands were haphazard & done with little thought given. But I concur w/everything you said about Aftermath. And I don’t think the US Rubber Soul (which replaced the AM radio friendly pop of Drive My Car & Nowhere Man with the acoustic I’ve Just Seen A Face & It’s Only Love) was a random accident. Capitol Records gave listeners of Rubber Soul a more mellow & introspective experience than what the UK fans got. It may not have been what the Beatles intended, but I don’t think it was a bad thing in this case.
where you are and what you're involved in,what psychologists call "set and setting" explain the many opinions expressed among us regarding which version of any song you like....or hate
I never cared about quality recording- I only care about a rockin' tune!...not that it matters but at 5:44 you called it Behind the Buttons-which is actually a better title in my opinion-too late now? yes... too late.
Congrats...a deeper, more critical analysis of something I can say, and have, a thousand times...EARLY Stones, in mono, are the Stones I love. And...imho...recorded Stones are waaaay better than live Stones. That's me. Out.
If your a musician and performer, you know live music is mono. All public music is mono. Stereo is a gimmick foisted to sell more complicated music systems. Mono always sounds better than stereo because stereo by it's nature always has a degree of phase cancellation that weakens the sound. Mono gives the producer greater control in terms of both bass response and panning high end effects like delay and reverb. Panning stereo delay and reverb is limited by extreme phase cancellation.
one difference between the Beatles and stones mono releases that I noticed is the covers. on the stones cover the band looks like they actually HAVE mono. The Beatles, on the other hand, appear to have been vaccinated with the acception of Ringo, which would explain alot
Without re watching the video, it is possible I may have miss spoke (meant to say CD but said LP). Can you tell me what time stamp you are referring to?
Mmm, I know you have spent time comparing vinyl and CD but somehow you come to different conclusions than I have. I have purchased the Stones vinyl mono box and I am very happy with it but I would not even consider spending money on the CD version based on my experience comparing the formats. Enjoy your honest reviews but I wonder what your stereo setup is. Mine is all analog (tube amp, pre-amp etc) and vinyl simply sounds better when I compare. Anyway that's my 2 cents worth. I appreciate your videos. All the best, Kevin McGivern
Paint It Black is horrible in stereo. I used to have it on a compilation album when I was young. Then I bought basically everything on cd when they came out, and the song sounded so much worse on that ! I always thought it was the crap sound of cd's that fucked the song up, but now I think it was the stereo version that ruined (most notably) the last part of the song.
Beggars Banquet features only one mono mix, that being sympathy for the Devil. The remaining tracks are merely fold downs of the stereo mixes. Consequently they sound the same apart from the fact they are in mono of course. Unlike the Beatles many stones songs were only mixed in stereo hence the reason why you hear no difference in content between mono and stereo. Really beggars Banquet for sure should have been excluded with the mono mix of sympathy appearing on Stray Cats. The Beatles did this with the mono set by excluding yellow submarine as the mono was merely a fold down.
Thanks. That’s good info. I just uploaded a video today about some of the differences between the Beatles and Stones in Mono. Wished I had read your comment prior to doing so, I would have included some info about it. It’s scheduled for later today
You are the only critic I listen to. You are very clear in the way you talk ( for non native US ) and very precise .
Thank you.

The US version of Aftermath in Mono is amazing. Listening to the boomin bass on Under My Thumb in my car is a pleasure!
Yes. I got rid of my stereo copy after hearing it in mono
Let It Bleed mono is a fold down mix, not dedicated. So if you use a Y adapter on and play the stereo version it will sound just like the mono version. Sympathy For The Devil was the last song to have a dedicated mono mix.

These records sound amazing on vinyl. So quiet and determines my setup is all good. These records sound perfect.
Would love to see a review of the Kinks Mono box set. Not sure if you have that one.
Sounds like from this that mono makes things sound beefier or more like live music. And stereo benefits spacier and trippier parts.
Can you look at the SACD editions of The Rolling Stones 60’s output? Not having a SACD player to get the benefit of this format, I always wondered what I was missing? I tend to do a lot of my listening in the car (toyota car stereo) and on my wireless earbuds (bose)

Mono the true Sound, the Best Sound,This Set is a good Example
Excellent review. Thank you!
I couldn't tell the difference in Let it bleed other then Sympathy for the devil, the mixes I mean on both stereo and mono. Can you?
Sympathy is a dedicated mono mix. The rest of the album is a stereo fold down.
I’d like to ask, how much did you pay for this box set? I’m trying to find it for a reasonable price on Amazon.
The version of Yesterday’s Papers in mono is slightly longer. I own the mono Between The Buttons American lp. I don’t own this boxed set.
5:45 you misspoke no big deal but it's between the buttons not behind

Beggars banquets cover is censured in mono?
It's the ugly toilet cover...not the invitation cover.

margaretsville good point! The LP version Totally different sonically than the CD!

I have not done one that specifically covers that. I did do a track by track analysis/review of the album itself that you can see here studio.ua-cam.com/users/video2OPBKY8GVLs/edit
As for the my thoughts on the Stereo vs Mono. On this re issue set I enjoyed the mono version more. But not too long ago I picked up an original pressing of the stereo version and found that I liked it as much as I liked the Mono version of the re issue.

Which are the knockoffs which label
I never cared about quality recording- I only care about a rockin' tune!...not that it matters but at 5:44 you called it Behind the Buttons-which is actually a better title in my opinion-too late now? yes... too late.
Yes LOL. Too late to change it. I think my subconscious didn’t like the “Between the Buttons” either and changed it.
You do realize that Let it Bleed and almost all of Beggars Banquet are stereo fold downs, right?
Under My Thumb - Marimba lost in mono version
Well THAT'S a serious loss!
one difference between the Beatles and stones mono releases that I noticed is the covers. on the stones cover the band looks like they actually HAVE mono. The Beatles, on the other hand, appear to have been vaccinated with the acception of Ringo, which would explain alot
BIG LOL!......Thanks best laugh I have had all day!
Why call Lp they are CD am I missing something
All the best,
Kevin McGivern
Paint It Black is horrible in stereo.
I used to have it on a compilation album when I was young.
Then I bought basically everything on cd when they came out, and the song sounded so much worse on that !
I always thought it was the crap sound of cd's that fucked the song up, but now I think it was the stereo version that ruined (most notably) the last part of the song.
I've never heard anyone compare Between The Buttons to the Beatles. I just don't hear it.
me either, seriously never compared the two i love them both but the beatles have long since passed....
Between The Buttons is closer to a Kinks record than anything Beatles oriented.
Beggars Banquet features only one mono mix, that being sympathy for the Devil. The remaining tracks are merely fold downs of the stereo mixes. Consequently they
sound the same apart from the fact they are in mono of course.
This video buffers, can't completely play, sadly
Behind the Buttons? Lol
You got ripped off..Chinese bootleg box
Stop with the Sound like the Beastles mantra already.
