Hello KB Time. I have to say I am totally impressed with this set and your incredible description of the whole set from the sound to the different covers. The detail you give is jaw dropping. Love it, Great stuff. Keep up posting these great Thank you Tino
They didn’t include the photo on Let it Bleed because it mimicked the UK release, not the US Release. If they wanted to do the photo, they would’ve replicated the US record, which never came out in Mono. I also thought Gimme Shelter was a dedicated Mono Mix, but I may be wrong. As for the Beatles fold downs, the Mono box replicated the UK releases (and 1 US release). Abbey Road and Let it Be only came out in mono through Reel to Reel releases. Plus all the albums were cut from the original Analogue tapes, which a mono tape of the two don’t exist. The Stones box had Beggar’s Banquet and Let it Bleed because both came out in the UK, not because of completist 3rd world country reasons. The Beatles fold down release you’re talking about was Yellow Submarine, which did come out in the UK and is kinda unfortunate that it wasn’t in the Beatles mono box. Cheers
Wow, $299 CDN is only $222 US... which is WAY less than I paid. I'm not trying to be a salesman, but if you work it out per LP (and I'm not even including the two that are superfluous), that's $17 per album. Plus you get all the rare Stray Cats cuts. I think it's a steal to have all the albums in one place, at one time, in great quality. Obviously they should have done a few things differently with this set, but overall it beats trying to find all this music by tracking down the original albums. On the other hand, if you want just the best Stones material, it would definitely be cheaper to buy the London Singles Collection, Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed. and maybe a UK version of Aftermath. (I personally would also grab Rolling Stones Now!)
Missing (Big Hits) High Tide and Green Grass with foldout poster from November ‘ 66 and Through The Past Darkly (Big Hits Vol 2) in original octagonal gatefold cover from September ‘69. How on earth does this represent value for money with very little attention to detail. As you say the labels are not the same and even some of the inserts are awol. No red inner sleeve or 3D cover for ...Satanic Majesties
Good question! Just comparing the two technologies theoretically, stereo is supposed to be superior for having more depth and soundstaging to the sound than mono. In practice, though, most stereo recordings (especially non-classical) can have phasing issues that offset the advantages. At the same time, mono can sound more closed-in and less detailed (again, in theory). It's sort of like the difference between sitting 4th row (stereo) versus 20th row (mono) in a concert hall. The sound SHOULD blend properly and reach your ears correctly in a live setting, but in recordings... there's a lot of variables. In the specific case of The Rolling Stones (and many other 1960s groups), they spent the most time on the mono mixes, and sometimes didn't even bother with a stereo mix, since most of their audience (teenagers) was listening in mono on portable phonographs, car radios, television and transistor radios. For this boxed set, the band's work through late 1965 ("Out Of Our Heads" LP) was only ever mixed in mono and doesn't exist in stereo (on official releases... the tracks recorded at Chess Studios are a major exception). So this is the best way to hear them (and the songs are mostly presented in mono on the 2002 SACD releases). After '65 everything is available in mono OR stereo. This box just attempts to put out the mono mixes (which often have slight differences since they were mixed under the Stones' supervision, not an engineer rushing through the task as with the stereo). It's up to you which one you prefer, ultimately, but this box sounds so good, I'd be hesitant not to go with it! Especially since the "stereo" box released in 2011 is very expensive (and doesn't include a lot of material, such as "Stray Cats").
ok sounds good to me. also in the 50s and 60s it was 4track reel to reel. then 8track.

It sounds different and better on a lot of early rock albums, because stereo wasn't done that well. There was way too much separation, for one thing. All the vocals were on one side and the drums were way off in the distance on the other side. Plus, the bass is stronger in mono.
Tony C. It's worth pointing out though that back then they listened to one speaker today we have stereo as standard so listening in mono on a stereo system is going to sound better than it ever did originally.
Great box set but it would be more complete if Ya Ya's was included, the greatest ever album sleeve & also greatest ever live record by anybody let alone the Stones
Every song on here sounds better in mono. No need to buy it though, all available on digital. But it’s difficult to discern between albums, a long list of songs and many songs have repeat appearances
Notice the UK LP's did not have the name of the group on the sleeve. It was completely unnecessary. The Stones took awhile to really become popular in the U.S.
I heard from reliable sources that they had a problem gathering original mono tracks for all LP's. So, they used stereo fold downs in those cases. Which I understand are many. As well as using digital sources. Not a very good set for historical purposes. Hence, Beatles reign.
Yeah, the Stones didn't do the majority of their studio work in one studio were recording logs, and the source tapes were kept, like the Beatles and EMI. All the Beatles studio sessions were logged, and the original tapes were stored in the EMI tape vault, so they had very few problems when compiling their original recordings. The Stones were all over the place, but you would think Jagger/Richards, Andrew Oldham, or Decca would have done a better job of keeping up with their original source tapes? Very sad that some of those old tapes are lost.
Why would you only include inferior U.S. versions of a British bands work in a box set of their work. The U.S, versions were ‘Butchered just like The Beatles. The band wanted them out the way they were put together and not how some record company executives in the U.S. wanted to exploit the U.S. public by providing inferior product.
All in all a shoddy box put out by a shoddy company run by a gang of criminals called Klein. The Beatles Mono box is far superior. The only downside being no original Parlophone inner sleeves which Mono CD box had. Why?
Too little quality control and authenticity in reproducing the album covers. I didn't buy it, but instead I contented myself with CD-R's burned from free downloads, and DVD-R (DVD-Audios) burned from high resolution free downloads.

Love it,
Great stuff. Keep up posting these great
Thank you

Thanks for the great comment :)
Great review thanks for that. I just received the box and listened to Aftermath and BB. I agree they both sound phenomenal.
Thanks! Checkout my video on non-box Stones vinyl at trafficblossom.blogspot.com/2016/10/nerding-out-for-music-sounds-rolling.html
Really digging your channel so far Your a grest host, this never got boring for a second.
Are the LPs in poly lined inner sleeves ??
I never get tired of the Stones, be it in stereo, mono, quadra or whatever
Awesome box set and very informative review. Great video.

Beautiful job.
Do you have the Kinks in Mono box set. Enjoyed this review thanks.
Mine is still in the shrink wrap and unopened, looks to nice to open 🙈
thanks for the review, seems like a great set,but the price seems quite high in my opinion! in Canada Amazon is asking $299 CDN!

It has never been $299 on Amazon Canada. Maybe mapp47 is referring to the cd box set. The lowest it has been is $422 CDN.
you are correct sir,my mistake!
mapp47 No worries! It's all good!
billy joel could tell you about lp running at wrong speed

whats the point of mono.

SO HAPPY BOUGHT THEM ALL FIRST TIME OUT AND ALL the E P
Personally I think the first album sounds great on vinyl, much rougher than the later albums.

MEMO TURNER WAS REALISED AS SINGLE GOT IT
Credited to Mick Jagger and not Stones.
In my opinion the british versions are way better in terms of tracks and running order. Not cobbled together.

sensacional...
i guess I'm pretty randomly asking but do anybody know of a good site to watch new series online?
@Isaac Baylor Flixportal :P
@Randy Watson Thank you, signed up and it seems to work =) I appreciate it !!
@Isaac Baylor Glad I could help xD

FUCK YOU BEATLES!

@Michael H. That doesn’t mean they are better.
@Michael H. Relevant to people in the U.S. Irrelevant to the rest of us.
