For an easier but similar experience, come on over to Maui and check out the sunset atop Haleakala. At only 10,000 feet, the drive is not as punishing but the views are spectacular. And the drive down while watching the ever changing colors after the sun dips below the horizon is so relaxing and tranquil.
You are so right! Haleakala is also incredible and much easier. We did the sunset there a few years ago and loved it. So do you live on Maui? We loved our experiences there!

Yeah it’s amazing to see in person. This was a challenge to shoot due to the freezing cold and wind. It’s definitely a trip you want to be prepared for.
Amber is not alone. When visiting the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, my wife had a very similar experience when she got close to the drop offs. We will be going to Mauna Kea in 2025 so I will start prepping the wife now!

So how was the stars at night ?
So unfortunately they made us leave the summit right as the sun went down. We could have viewed the stars at the visitor center but opted to get started on the long drive back. I hear that they are great though.

We didn’t mess with any tours on this trip. We stayed with the free option! There are tours available that will take you into the observatories though. They also offer tours for the sunset and stargazing. It’s an amazing place!
