    Where to reserve the 4wd car to drive upto maun kea? When reaching out to rental cars they been saying it's not permitted to drive to summit. Is it true?

    • @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
      @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking  2 роки тому +2

      Just rent a Jeep. That’s what most people do, just make sure the rental company doesn’t have a “no Mauna Kea” clause sometimes they have gps in the car and know if you go and charge big time lol… or just take a tour bus there are several running again now. 🤙🏼

    just the video I was looking for. Thank you!
    I rented a 4 X 4 from Thrifty but did not know that I couldn't drive up to the summit with it. Thought it must be a really tough drive till I saw your awesome video of the somewhat easy drive and the great education you provide on the place. Almost booked a tour, but at close to $800 for 3 people I decided to do some digging and found out some people on TURO car rental site explicitly state that you can drive their 4WD vehicles up to the summit.
    I rented a 2022 Jeep Gladiator for the day for $220 (got the insurance for $35) so you could get it for under $200 if you pass on the insurance. Your video convinced me, and my wife, that we could drive up there ourselves. My 16 yo daughter is psyched!
    Now just have to layer up and take some blankets. Thanks again!

    Wow! I always imagined the road being one road continuous uphill road. So the antenna is the actual telescope? Is the terminology in astronomy different?

    • @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking

    • @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
      @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking  11 місяців тому

      It is a little closer from Hilo, but you could definitely make it in seven hours. It would take you about two hours to reach the summit from Hilo, keep in mind you will have to stop at the visitors center for about 30 minutes to acclimate. Also you will need a 4x4 vehicle that allows you to drive to the summit, some rental companies don't... Good Luck! 🤙🏼

    Can the public see live footage of what the telescope is viewing during the tour or is the CGI on the internet all we get?

    • @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
      @JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking  2 роки тому

      Hello, the majority of the telescopes see in infrared or microwave so they are not like an optical telescope like you may be thinking.
      So most of what is “seen” is data that then has to be processed to actually see images. 🤙🏼
