- We've all heard horror stories of Turkish Military Surplus ammunition causing guns to explode. So let's put the latest batch to the test and see how it does! Even knowing the risk, the price on this MKE 30-06 was just too good for me to pass up. The ammo is late 1960's production and comes on 8 round en-bloc clips inside cloth bandoliers. It's supposed to be non-corrosive and perfect for the M1 Garand Rifle, being loaded to M2 Ball spec. This particular milsurp lot was recently imported by Century Arms and seems to have been stored very well. This 67 headstamp ammo is clean and in good condition. I was pretty shocked by how it did at the range!

There is a guy who shows how to check if a round is corrosive. You get a certain kind of nail and pull the bullet and powder then trigger the primer over the nail and leave the casing on top of it. His sample showed clearly what is and isn't corrosive.
I bought a 1000 round sealed tin of MKE 76, it's labeled as ".30 Cal. M2 Normal M.K.E. 76". I bought 60 rounds and decided it was decent and went back for a full case. I agree with you, the Turkish ammo is slightly hotter than other M1 Garand ammo, bit only by about 100 fps. Mine didn't come in enbloc clips, but 20 round boxes. inside of a giant "sardine can" sealed with lead solder at the seams. I also agree that it's non-corrosive, however I think it's a little "sooty" or dirty compared to better, newer ammunition.

I have a sealed can from my uncle who gave it to me in 1970. It was also full of M1 garand bandolers of 8 rd clips. I just opened it 6 months ago they work great in my M1 garand and the casings were brand new looking shiney brass. So there is something to be said about sealed can ammo. But hey mine was free ammo. The date of manufacture was 1953 u.s. made ball ammo non corrosive.
You cannot trust a lot of sealed can ammo. Coming from Turkey, it's a safe bet it was stored dry. A lot of guys who bought Comm Block sealed cans when it was readily available and cheap stashed it for years and never opened them. A lot of the soviet stuff was not stored well and it's unbelievable how many people were shocked when they opened their cans and they were full of water or rust. Every can I ever bought I drilled pin holes in the bottom corners of then stored them. If water dripped out I opened them and shot what i could. Albanian is some of the best Comm block ammo but also suffered from the worst storage, a lot of cans came out of there with moisture and water from improperly sealed cans in bunkers that had flooded.
US 30-06 military ammo was corrosive through WW2 into Korea. Last batch of corrosive 30-06 ammo was Frankfurt Arsenal 1953.

Next time just get a wood board with a few regular galvanized nails sticking out. Take the brass and put over the mail then pop the primer. Check after a few days to see if rust is there. Easiest way to test corrosive primers
Velocity of M2 ball is specified at 78 feet from the muzzle which makes enough difference to matter. If I recall it's about 75 fps lower than 10 feet from the muzzle.
People always make a big deal about corrosive ammo like it will destroy a gun in 1 day. Corrosive residue causes damage after it has sat for an extended period, months or years, probably much longer. As long as you clean your rifle after shooting corrosive ammo through it, youll be fine. Dont have time for a full cleaning? Hot soapy water on a bore mop will do the trick. Works excellent on black powder guns which corrode for the same reasons.
prvi partizan manu's Ball2 for Ole Girl, they work fairly well. Nice brass too, only ran 7 rounds in the block,due to said nice brass.
I’ve got some Salt Lake City ‘72 dated 30-06 might be worth grabbing some of this Turkish ammo and seeing how it stacks up to US surplus of the same era.

The velocity of that ammo I believe is measured 78 feet from the muzzle. The Match is for sure but not sure about M2 Ball. So the readings may be correct.
Cal. .30 M2 also measured from 78'. Most U.S. rifle ammo, including .50 and 20mm is 78' from muzzle, pistol ammo ( 9mm and .45ACP) is measured 25.5 ft. from muzzle. Cal. 5.56x45mm doesn't specify distance from muzzle according to my source.
Unfired primer or very faint strike at 7:30?
Cartridge, Caliber .30, Ball, M2 velocity 2,740 +/- 30 fps is measured @ 78 feet from the muzzle w/ 152 gr. bullet. Pressure: 50,000 psi, maximum average, Accuracy: 7.5 " mean radius maximum average @ 600 yds. (approx. 2.5 MOA).
I just picked 400 rounds that ammo for $350. I have not shot any of it yet. I’ll have to check the head stamping on it. Interestingly though, it came loaded in four round machine gun belts. It was so cheap, if it works in my Garand and my 1903, I’ll probably stock up on it.

I just play it safe and go through and check the headstamps in each box I order and set all '62-'66 dates aside for use in bolt action Springfield rifles only. All the rest do great in my M1.

I've personally fired 320 rounds of this ammo through various rifles with the same results. Non corrosive and relatively accurate. those 320 rounds were either 74 or 75 headstamp. I received 80 rounds that were 63 headstamp and disassembled them and loaded them into safe cases. several of the 63 cases were cracked at the neck and case head. its a roll of the dice if you don't know what headstamp you will receive.
Your correct about all Turk Ammo on how it was stored...... I go through each round from .8mm to this .30-.06 stuff.... Going to pull some and check out the powder and do some work with my chrony this week now I have a bunch.... Their .8mm stuff is all over the place ans some .8mm reaches .223 FPS..... Don't want my stock to crack or my face blow up....... be well n Keep America Great....

Are you shooting this with the original gas plug or do you have a Garand Gear or Schuster plug? Assuming the normal plug is fine with this "M2" ball but am curious to hear your take since people in the gun community are so adamant about either being in the camp that thinks it doesn't matter shooting hotter ammo with the original plug or in the you need the adjustable gas plug for all 30-06 ammo camp.
Original plug. I don't shoot anything heavier than 160g so I've never been too worried about it.
With the m1 if you really want to shoot it I think getting an adjustable gas plug is worth it. Just detune the gas until it works well with whatever ammo you choose and get a lot less wear on the op rod.
Get you some of the orange or green dayglo round stick on dots at the office store. They would be cheaper than ones packaged for gun use at a gunshop.
The easiest way to determine if ammo is corrosive is to put a bright steel nail in the fired case over night. If it is corrosive the nail will have rust on it the next day.
I have bought some surplus MKE ammo from Centerfire but it was the 20 round boxes from 1978 though I did get one box dated from the late 50's. I do have a 1903A3 Springfield though so it shouldn't be a problem.
Have you ever tried the Pakistani M1 Garand ammo? I have a bit but never tried it. I only have one very nice Garand and don't wanna risk it. Luckily I bought plenty of Greek HXP (great stuff) and I reload so I have enough to not risk it for the moment.

This is great shooting ammo it looks like. I am always impressed how accurate the Garand is every time I shoot mine. Awesome rifles.
Berdan primed, non corrosive, didn't blow up the gun, nice and accurate. This stuff looks like a good buy if it's consistent between years.
I would never jeopardize my M1 by putting this ammo in it. I love my M1 way too much to risk it even a little bit.
Except hundreds of 1000's of soldiers did and I doubt they said, whooooo stop stop stop, this war can wait, we want Federal nickel loaded factory ammo.
@panthermartin7784 And if this were a war I would probably not be so selective or risk averse with my weapon. This, however, is not a war. My M1 was not given to me by the government and there is no room full of racks of replacements should anything bad happen to it.

His is in a lot better shape than my lot of MKE. I bought it online and when I got it the boxes were fine but the ammo inside was so filthy I had to go salt/vinegar bath them. They fired very hot out my axis ll that the bolt was sticking and I had a case crack.
With MKE 30-06 just be careful who you order from.

I got some of that CMP sealed cans from Denmark I think some years ago,. I will stick to that or roll my own to know what I got for sure.

I just discovered my Dutch 30-06 ammo attracts a magnet. I was somewhat surprised. anyone had experience with this? It is not black tipped.
The Turkish 8 mm Mauser, depending on the year of production can have some very bad pressure issues too.
That's not exactly true. Most people aren't used to 8mm light ball. Light ball was pretty spicy, but nowhere near as hot as the full power hunting ammo currently used in Europe.
A lot of these UA-cam gun guys haven't been around long enough to have experience with all the surplus ammo we had access to in the 70s- 90s. They think Turkish 8mm is hot, and it's really not.

I think (from memory) the Garand was still the standard issue rifle of the Turkish armed forces during the invasion of Cyprus in 1974?
If shooting ammo in your Garand that you have not personally loaded but purchased. Do this,,, Swab the barrel with good old soap and water like a black powder. muzzleloader. Then clean as usual.... Halts corrosive ammo in it's tracks and saves your Barrel.....Consider all loaded surplus ammo Corrosive....As if you don't it will ruin your Garand barrel. Soap and water kills Corrosion, then run the oil patch......SGT. J Miller
I think using just oil as long as you thouroughly clean it is fine and thats ehat ive done with all mine
Window cleaner w/ ammonia, then, do your usual solvent product cleaning.
To dissolve the corrosive salts, you need a water based substance, even very, very hot water is better than nothing. Follow up with your usual cleaning procedure..@@cantsneedgaming4591

I don't know. I don't think it's worth it me getting hurt and ruining my firearm, I used to buy a lot of old surplus ammo, and I did like what I saw. I would rather buy reloads, and you're taking a chance with those, too.

I bought some Turkish 8 mm Mauser I think it’s 800 rounds it is junk. I’m going to have to pull the bullets out of it. The brass is cracked won’t fire just junk.
Think of how much you have in your M1, and what it means to you. Now decide how cheap you want to go with your ammo. Worth the risk?

Never ever buy turk ammo. Their storage is awful and their brass is bottom grade and can't be reused.
Furthermore the turk ammo costs as much as modern non corrosive 3006 from ppu and norma.
