Heavy Duty Scrub Mower Hasn't Run for Years... Will it start ??

- I saw this old brush mower on marketplace for $50 and couldn't resist.
It is neglected and worn out, It will be a useful machine if I can resurrect it.
A few people have asked where I got the cordless air pump, very useful tool - www.banggood.com/custlink/3mm... - Навчання та стиль
“Yeh, that bearing’s pretty buggered”, this is the kind of technical language I understand!
Marty is being polite. An Aussie might say completely rooted.
At the intersection of economical and a little terrifying we find this device.
"economical and a little terrifying"
Why have it any other way?
Fun fact. The spark is also hard to see through a black gloved hand. lol
Should have put his clear gloves on.
Yeah
Marty T: Will it start ??
Everyone who has watched Marty fix literally everything: 👀
Marty T..deserve his own TV show...👍
Right? I don’t like click bait...we all know the answer to that question haha
Another top video.
1. Clean all rust out.
2. Give it a good coat of paint.
3. Repair anything broken.
4. Change fluids.
5. Sharpen Blades.
6. Make a video of all of the above.
😀😀😀 Thanks for another great video.
Wife: Where's my trees?
Marty: Uhhh. dunnno dear
The sheep must have eaten them.🤣🤣
Those sheep have broad backs and are able to accept such minor abuse (and, in any case, they most likely would have ate them had their paddock gate been left open).
Lol
“Will it start” is that even an option now with Marty 🤔
Na cause he's got the knack most kiwis have it lol
Maybe it wouldn't start if it had thrown a leg out of bed.
Well, it has two choices - Marty, or Mustie!
Marty - any project - any content welcome.
Everyone else is laxin about.
Spot on
Just clearing space for more earthmoving gear/boats/tractors? I'm waiting for the day you announce, "I picked up this old A4 Skyhawk just sitting on a pole outside an airbase. Will it fly?" ;-)
Fixing a mower.
The switch a bit rusty.
For a moment there
I thought this was Mustie.
Nice buy. Thanks for the fun. :-)
Funny, I said the same thing!
Mustie1 fans in the comments
Was looking through to see if anyone had linked the mustie1 video on a very similar machine 😀
Yeah
Also might be worth attaching a flap or lengths of chain to the back as ankle savers.
Good idea
That could make a great Christmas present for your wife, Marty. Make sure you video the surprised look on her face Christmas morning though.
CR - I was just thinking along those lines!
"Next job - train the missus to use it........ " :)
@@gaius_enceladus To be fair Marty has his dozers, graders and tractors for his access road, his leaky boat to get his mussels, so I just thought the missus deserves a little help around the garden. The only thing is, if she doesn't appreciate it, that angry ram might be in trouble.
Lol
The best part about this channel is that you breathe life into stuff that would normally get tossed into the scrap pile. I'd totally rock this mower on my farm for $50!
Oh no, the deforestation of New Zeeland has begun !
Martyt got a brush mower. LOL
Great video.
New Zealand will never be the same
Lol
I started to think, well they just had to a bit of maintenance and it would have run, but then I remember that what we see is years of expertise and a bit of machine mojo. Nice to see this machine brought back from the dead.
In my part of the world, Foxglove is a very desirable flower. In Marty's world, it's a weed. :)
Well where Marty lives it’s beautiful, He doesn’t need that extra beauty. And his sheep don’t eat it so it’s useless and will take over pretty quick!
Lol
Looks like an old DR Field and Brush mower sold here in the states back in the 80's looks like it was repowered and heavily modified that will be handy around the property for sure !
Those late night tv commercials were pervasive, I remember wanting one of those things before I wanted a car.
@@HiVizCamo indeed
Like this?

“After market additions” hilarious. Another great video Mr T.
Lol
The whole thing is an aftermarket addition to that fine engine.
Its an old Masport mower that contractors used to use back in the 70's - just watch out for rocks flying out the side - I think the trick was to put part of an old inner tube on the exit to slow down any rocks etc.
Have seen one still being used in the last 5 years in Auckland as he did a good job of grinding the dirt out when mowing the lawn :)
Nice find in pretty good shape! Does a good job without having sharpened the blade. I’d suggest you consider cutting the front of the deck skirt off and it will cut through without you having to lift it up and down onto the bush. Most brush hogs work without the front skirt. Just a thought. You can always weld it back on if you don’t like it. Good luck!
Thats a good idea cheers
When we cut the front end off brush cutter, it cut without lifting, but when it got into gravel, or glass, it tossed it like shrapnel for 50-feet, ok for the field, not safe anywhere else.
@@MartyT could always hang chains from the front like a traditional brush mower to help prevent debris from exitting but also allowing you to run over brush just like the previous person mentioned
Nearly 1am in the UK and your video popped up and here I am enjoying it, thanks Marty 🇬🇧
I have just found him and I'm in the UK too
Excellent, clear scrub for extra tractors / diggers / bulldozers / boats!
Dear Marty T.
👍👌👏 Well done again and as always. Great purchase again. That's a really nice mower monster. 13 hp is a lot for a push mower, it definitely does the job very well. I'm eagerly looking forward to watch part 2.
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health to all of you.
It is a new zealand Rotamower.
My Dad was a contractor in NZ in 60,s & 70's. He loved his Rotamower.
Blade height is adjusted by slackening pulley then pulling the spindle. Simple but effective
Totally looking forward to part two. You should strip the whole machine down and give it a complete restoration, it can’t possibly take that long
Have you watched this channel before? Marty doesn't mess with the patina, no full restorations here! (I know you were being sarcastic, Cheers)
For fifty bucks? Even with the bearings and elbow-grease, that's a good deal. I can think of a few hard-to-get-to areas full of sticker bushes and saplings that I'd immediately run down.
Good deal
No butter knives were harmed in rescuing this mower. So far.
It's an old Masport Estate Master mower dating from 70's / 80's. Loosen the bolt on the blade pulley and the blade spindle can be moved up and down to change the cutting height. Greetings from the north island.
Cheers Chris
you and Mustie1 should work together you are both Gods when it comes to fixing stuff
I found they mow hidden rocks well too, I still have the scar on my leg from 40 odd years ago. Nice to get it working in such a short time bro.
Yesh, makes you appreciate those other Kiwi brush mowing accoutrements..the thick wool socks worn inside knee-high gumboots...
Yeah a good tool but you need to know what your doing
The brand is rota mower, they were made in South Auckland. I'll try and find the manual I had for one. I've had a couple - great slashers.
Weak point is the gearbox, the gear and helical screw are brass. The rubber o rings on the base of the gear box tend to wear out and leak - then the over heat and lunch the box.
Hope this helps!
I could honestly sit back on the couch for a whole week just letting Marty feed me content....
without the word 'content' this comment is extra sus
but me too
Yeah
Brush hog. That’s just the name we use for it.
Always love the birdsongs in the background!
Yeah
The Tool Whisperer comes to the rescue once more.
That he does
I will call you the "Brush Hog DR.".
Can't beat that for 50 bucks..little more work and you've got a great machine,,,
It's very similar to a Hayter Condor of around 1960s vintage! It's not an actual Hayter, but is very similar. Be very careful with it, if it has a reverse gear - It will be very unforgiving if you trip over and it reverses over you! A scary machine indeed, and requires great care in operation.
That turned out a lot better than I thought it would at first inspection!
I JUST bought one of these new, put it in the field today, and ten minutes later my right wheel found a hunk of rebar. Destroyed the tire.
I did that too except mine was a nail
Better than a council workman.
Hey Marty, the plastic oil jug is genius. Another good video from you. 👍
After watching several of your Vlogs , and hearing all manner of birds in the background, can also hear jet engines, so maybe your near an airfield?..?, love your , “can we fiv it “ videos, cheers from across the ditch, ❤️🦘🦘🦘😂
Kind of surprised at it's high cost. :) Seems like there should have been a free option.
Love the cobwebs at 6:20.
You must have the best wife if she lets you bring home a new project every few weeks...
you are old school engineering Marty - not the modern chuck it and renew it brigade. A contractor asked me once "excuse me asking are you or were you a marine engineer?" I said "yes trained as am agricultural engineer - worked as a marine engineer then ended up in the power generation industry" - he said " I thought so because you just put a plan in place to fix the problem like a marine engineer would because you got to get the ship home !!!! Keep the vids coming enjoy them all - how about some fishing ??
Great machine for long grass and scrub sections...watch your feet & cars...they can trow rocks like a baseball player.
Nice find for $ 50.00 !
I would put some kind of cover over this pulley and belt. When going through bushes, some may get caught and driven below the engine.
Well, we all knew you would get it going I was annoyed that you didn't carefully check out the big spinning blade properly before using it but at least you got around to it in the end without losing a leg.
The "slightly over full oil" is always a concern with these motors. It is usually because gas has leaked through the carb into the crankcase. An inexpensive fuel valve on it would be good insurance
This mower brings back memories from when I was a kid the old man mowing meter tall grass
Thats a bargain! The engine alone must be worth much more than 50 bucks!
Of course its going to work, you own it!
Lol
It looks like an older Yazoo mower. If it’s self propelled it’s hard to keep up! Great find!
$50! The engines worth that alone! Score! 😉
With that soothing, buttery accent Marty gently cajoles anything back to life. If only he was a surgeon.
Lol
Those are what we in the states call Brush or Bush hogs. Always great to have on hand if you've got any kind of land.
There's something therapeutic about these videos.👍
It's always satisfying to see a gorse plant get what's coming to it. I'm a little sad about the manuka tree but there's plenty more where that came from. 👍 next video: blades and bearings?
Edit: just noticed that dead legacy wagon slowly rotting in the corner of your yard. I see you are a gentleman of taste. 👌
Great buy-even if the rest of the unit was a loss, the motor was worth $50. Good stuff Marty; God bless.
The main 3, air, fuel and spark and away it went👌🏻
Nice job Marty. Looking forward to part two when you take care of the blade shaft and reweld the housing.
Good idea
It's like the machine version of Rambo
That thing is a monster , well worth the money 😉👍👍🇺🇸
Another great rescue from my favorite bloke down under! That thing really cut through that brush. I could have used that when I was clearing up the southern fence line here on the property. Couldn't get any of the mowers or tractors in close enough so I got as close as I could and then got in there and got dirty with a bladed head on a big string trimmer. I'm dreading the eastern fence line because the other side of it is HEAVILY overgrown. There is still about 1/2 acre of property on the other side of that fence that is ours that goes all the way to a creek. I'd really like to get back there and clean that land up.
Those foxgloves are pretty flowers but poison.
Down here in south Florida we call that a key mower.
Looks like a home job rip-off of a 1980s DR brush mower that the old fella used to use! Definitely a home upgrade and what a beast for $50!
Crackin Vid Marty - you been on holidays or something? Mrs and I have been hangin for your next vid!
Its a beauty, I was surprised how easily it mowed down the little trees.. I had surgery last month so had to take it easy for a while.
@@MartyT mate, are you all good? I dont need to spend hours scouring the internet for someone who comes close to your cathartic repariesque videos! Lemme guess, you (unlike me) got the snip LOL
Mrs is keen to get back home to the MbSnds, hopefully over xmas or just after. Would love to taste some of your mussels!
As usual Marty you got it done again. That's a good job. It's a good scrub mower.
I have a very similar machine made by Ariens. Mine is walk behind, with a 24 rotary mower. By removing 2 bolts, the deck is removed and then you can attach a 24" snowblower. It also has a lock out hub so it can be 1 or 2 wheel drive. The machine is from the early 70's and still works good. I also had to replace the bearing on the spindle for the mower.
Mower, mulcher, small chainsaw! You got a beast there Marty!!!
Marty thats an absolute bargain mate, I was looking around for a used scrub mower a while ago and youd be hard pressed to find a flogged out Deutsche for under $500 aussie.
please bring us back for part 2!
Fox Gloves are a popular perennial flower people love to grow in their flower gardens here in my area. I find it interesting when a flower planted in our gardens here to beautify and add color is considered just another invasive weed to get rid of in other countries. It's nice to see a different perspective. :)
Nek minute Marty starts to build an on farm golf course.
I really liked the video.
oooh nothing better than waking up on a sunday morning to find greasekiwi here was fixing something up at the other side of the planet. Keep up the good work Marty your channel is one of the hidden gems of the internet! greetings from Amsterdam
It's a great mower hey
I love these fixer upper projects Marty, the fact that the "Briggs & Scrap Iron" 13hp engine runs means that thing is worth 50 bucks in my opinion
Like the way the gearbox attaches to the blade without a chain, that way if it hits something solid it wont fuck the motor by abruptly stopping it common issue with regular mowers.
Yes it is a good design
Initially i was wondering if maybe they paid you $50 to take it away 😂 also, What's happened to your sheep ? Are they on strike or something !
That flathead Briggs engine will run forever. It's more reliable than the ohv engines.
Hi Martin thank you for all the programs that you do I really enjoy watching you bring something home looks like a piece of crap but in the end and fix it up and runs well Cliff from Across the ditch Australia
You've bought alive a scrub monster...nice for $50!!!
Look's like a Moller Industries mower, made in NZ.
Hello Marty T. God bless you and your family 😁👍🍺🍺
Marty, I find it " Relaxing" your " Narrating" plus I Learn by how " Methotical" you are!! Thanks..Dean Toronto

I've got a new project ... Marty's child's first words 😁
Lol
Excellent work👍👍👍 . Thanks for sharing. Next video Marty does the repairs
What a cliffhanger!
I had one of these 30+ years ago n back then it was old!
The motor was a pull start Briggs so yours has been modded to electric start which is nice?
Good old Paeroa days!
Hope the sheep know better than to eat the pretty foxgloves, but not very sanguine about it. Very good fix on that bushhog. Perhaps you could find a way to mount it on the roofs of the road machines, so you don't get slapped in the face so often.
Marty T if you cut out some of the front section of the deck it will cut alot better because it won't lay the grass don't in front of it like it's doing now hence u have to life the front to get it to let the grass in
Looks like it already paid for itself
I've got exactly the same model - got it way back in the '70's, was used by the Featherston Golf Club. Great lawn mowers. Reduction boxes always leak out oil and blade bearings always flog out.
That confirms it wasn't a DIY job
Do you know what brand/make it is?
I like the gentle first time try - straight into the bush!! Brilliant.
Lol
Well done Marty. It's definitely worth fixing up. Thanks for sharing.
I've got something similar to that made by masport for the district school board back in the 80s. Mine has a variable speed drive I made a whole new deck for it goes mint
Ah always wondered why people do positive first, great little tips! Keep up great videos 👍
i really enjoy seeing your resourcefulness!
We will come back, and he would have added a chair, and self driving and a cup holder, all with a wrench with the world's longest pribar attached
