How to make a Wood Wrap / Wood over Foam Surfboard

- Take a snapped surfboard and give it new life wrapped in wood. Repair, strip off the fiberglass & wrap up in 5mm strips of paulownia.

Love it! Someone crazier or stupider than me? I'm watching this chuckling to myself thinking how many people would put this much work into a board like that. Then I came to the comment at 7:26 and you say it all, "Wow, that was a lot of work!" (have a beer...or 12...) Great job mate! But here's the thing, you gave me some wonderful ideas for other projects. I have numerous pieces of scrape wood and perhaps combining it with foam filler, some laminated sheets, there might be some fun and unique future projects here! Thank you!!!

This is a great idea, just wondering is there a reason why you couldnt vacuum bag the skin on ? seems this would be easier and not so much work. Is the paulownia to thick and not easy to bag on ?

If i have a PU board can i use some q-cell to stick the timber to the bottom and the deck? if i live Perth western Australia, were do i get the paulownia timber from?
yes it think q cell OK just do a test run first. Paulownia ? ...well we got plenty over here on the east coast, I'm sure there's someone growing over there 8-)

such a rad project. considering a similar 'wrap' with cloth reinforcement to act as a shield for the bottom of a whitewater river SUP. these get a lot of damage from rocks, so my question: do you think 5mm is enough to protect the board? how much stronger is this board than just a traditionally glassed board?
Hi David, I don't think Paulownia timber would surfice, it's reasonably strong impact strength but you can push your finger nail into it when not glassed and even glassed wouldn't stand up to what your discribing.
I'd be only guessing what you need but I'd be looking at other craft that white water and what material their made from... maybe you could use that as the wrap in place of Paulownia/tlmber.

Great video. I part exchanged a noserider longboard today. Made a big mistake, as I didn't realize how many digs it had. It's too good to take off the fibreglass. If I repair the pressure dings etc, and sand down the hot coat, could I glue Paulownia to the sanded polyester resin? The board is 23 wide and I'd like a 25.5" wide board. The board is already heavy. But it'd be fun to have a wooden board. What do you think?
I don't see why not....if you're not too concerned about weight, maybe you could go a little thinner with the Paulownia as well, maybe 1/8", I generally use 1/4". The only concern would be the rails, you probably still need to cut them off but that would give you the width you're after. Maybe just use some Q cell to fill the dings & depressions, easy to sand and get in shape.

Thanks, I've been using polyurethane foaming glue for deck and bottom, expoxy putty for the rail bands.👌

G'day John. You inspired me to start a similar project. I'm wondering about setting fin boxes back into the expanded foam though, was that strong enough to set them back in or would you do something different? I'm considering setting blocks of timber into the foam for the fin boxes to go into.
Seamus Miller Cheers Seamus, so far holding up but putting blocks there would be a good idea & certainly be stronger. I feel that the 4 to 5mm timber that the boxes were set in on this board ( I agree the expandable foam has no strength ) is much stronger than in a fiberglass board. I'm now wanting to do a new shaped blank. good luck with it.
Thanks for the video. Did you use your own thicknesser to prepare all the strip planks? Also the coving edges, assume you used a router to get them in? Could see a proud look from you when your board wash finished, awesome.
Hi, I got a joiner to dress the strips as I don't have the gear and Yes the bead and cove was done with a router table but I feel it's not needed on the bottom of board, just square edges would suffice. Clamping the bead and cove can bring other problems too if it's not cleanly machined eg. trying to get a gap free joint to make it water tight if you're not glassing. It all has pros and cons. It does look nice oiled, has a real deep grain look. Thanks for the feedback. ✌🏼🙂

Thanks for putting these vidoes up so we can all learn some different techniques with wood. But a total act of randomness ? does it matter if someone copies our ideas or we copy theirs ? most ideas are copies or learnt techniques anyway with a tweak here or there.
I agree, " most ideas are copies or learn't techniques anyway with a tweak here or there." in this case though (wrapping a surfboard in timber) for me it wasn't, & possibly somebody somewhere at that time was doing the same thing, who knows?. Hence "an act of total randomness", unfortunately for us all Big Surf Co/business are very proactive today in protecting what they perceive as their own ideas or techniques. Thanks for that.

Nice work, i am working on longboard with your instructions, worked great so far . One question about the rail, how many layer did you add ? One at the beginning with of squared pieces and than other four above using the template?
thought to cover it with epoxy resin afterwards, do you thing I have to use fiber as well or does work out without? Would like to avoid to add further weight, cause i used african whitewood, the only lightwood I could find here, the market on sardinia is quiet limited :D
@@aleksardah9532 Hi mate, I used 4 rail bands, 5 in total. The number you use depends on what shape rail you want in relation to the thickness of your board, less bands gives you a rounder fuller rail , more bands if you'd like a lower thinner rail.
If you get good tight joints there's probably no need to use cloth when glassing, just paint, but if you have a few gaps and can suck air between the joints then may need to glass with cloth fiber. You may be able to source 3/4oz cloth fiber (used for model airplanes) which will help keep the weight low.

Great for recycling a board - you could use balsa sheets and full rails to make it easier, quicker and lighter.
Riley Balsawood Cheers Mark, Ive been using Paulownia so I don't have to glass & it's in plentiful supply were I live & I'm enjoying the felling/milling process. But hey, I'm always open to easier techniques, thanks.

Looks nice, great job. I'm just wondering what type of glue did you use to glue the foam with the wood? Was it like a special type of glue or just all purpose glue?
Thanks, I think I used epoxy putty on the bottom & polyurethane foaming glue on the deck, lately Ive just been using foaming glue but u need to make sure you get a good seal other wise it will leak if your going to oil/wax finish.

Hi John, what kind of glue you use & recommend? I have got some spabond 340 epoxy. Do you think is good to wrap wood on blank and bond wood with wood?
I use polyurethane foaming glue and/or West system epoxy. Sorry I don't know anything about Spabond epoxies.
@@DeepCreekTV ok John. Clear enough. West System's known but Yankee. As far as I can I avoid to use it and didn't know they made epoxy structural adhesives. Let's say Gurit is the European improved enlarged staff competitor to west system. You can find all staff and specs on the web. You get no Gurit down under, do you? Sounds interesting.
@@fabioprb3538 I just mix the 403 filler in, works fine, I mainly use PU foaming. Dunno about the gurit, if ya can get or not ? I'll 👀 out.
@@DeepCreekTV have a look on the web for gurit SP106 resin for wood applications can be mixed with all kind of fillers and also pure for wood impreg. As well as Spabond 340 or 345 for wood bonding. I will try these adhesives to avoid wood stem bending on recycling an old gun board cause I got no steaming staff. I know it is risky. Will let you know.

Hi John, could you give me some more information about coating it with beeswax? I am looking to do the same thing but I am wondering how it keep the board from getting pressure dings if the wood isnt that thick. And what did you mix it with? Let me know :)
You should find the timber will have good impact strength, I've never had a pressure ding but it does scratch although without glass the scratch generally self repairs over time. I mix bees wax with natural turpentine oil to make a polish, you can experiment with it. Before this I give it 4 coats of thinned raw tung oil, this is a very slow process, 4weeks to dry before bees wax polish.

Heya John, Great vid on the build, and what a beauty of a board came out! Could you please fill me in on your preffered method for glueing up the deck or bottem strips? Both you're "full bottem glue-up" or "single strip deck" methods seem to work fine to me, but why did you switch? And how would you do it next time? Keep on doing what you do! Cheers Richard
+675Rich thank you, I was just experimenting really....If I had to choose I'd go the "single strip". Some ppl are vacuum bagging thinner 3mm x width of board sheets to the deck & bottom but I don't have that luxury.
+DeepCreekTV Thanks for the reply! Funny that I made a "el cheapo" vacuum/ rockertable for kitesurfboards, and that was actually why i asked. Now trying a strapless kiteboard combining that with your method. Dont throw away old fridge motors (becouse thats all you need for your own vacuum pump)

Too much elaborate. Also this this wood sheets made whole board significantly thicker and chunkier than former shape. Use veneer rather than this thick sheet and most of all use vacuum bagging. For u can laminating rails use saran wrap method with plastic food wrap foil.
