I'm your host, Darren Van Dam!
Tired of looking for good movies to watch on Netflix, Amazon Prime or other streaming services? Every week I recommend a handful of the best movies on Netflix, Amazon, HBO etc. so my subscribers never run out of good movies to watch on streaming. Spending 10 minutes watching one of my videos could save you hours of searching, hours that you could otherwise spend watching good movies on streaming that you otherwise might not have ever watched or even known about.

Any thoughts on The Terminal List ?
I'm on the fence...
gotta disagree with you on "interstellar". i think it's in nolan's top 5. i've re-watched a few times now, maybe 5 total. it keeps getting better, for me anyway.
GREAT pin.

My parents asked me what I would like for my birthday in 1960. I asked for us to go to our local drive-in theater which was running a science fiction triple feature. "War of the Worlds", "This Island Earth", and "Forbidden Planet". Even though my dad and I were the only ones who stayed awake through all three movies (mom and my three brothers were sound asleep) it is still to this day one of my best family memories. Drive-in theater pizza, popcorn, and cupcakes we brought. Making use of the drive-in theater playground. Heaven.
The roar from the monster of the id is still terrifying today. As is the creepy house/probe scene from war of the worlds. Man what a scary drive in for a kid
@@thomaskrutulis2289 I loved every minute. All of my brothers and I loved Saturday afternoon horror and science fiction movies. We had a cousin who later worked in the film industry in continuity. Never invite someone with that job to join you on movie night - is all I'm saying.
All three are great movies. I have fond memories of This Island Earth. What an unusual movie with aliens with large foreheads and that creepy monster on Metaluna. This is why movies are so great coming from the 60s through 90s.
@@bondgabebond4907 😃Don't forget to shout out to the 1950s and the B and C movies which inspired and entertained so many. Thank you for your wonderful reply.
The Starlight drive-in theater in Atlanta has Robbie painted on the wall below one of the screens.
Does no one remember a movie called Dark City? A fantastic sci-fi in 1998 with Kiefer Sutherland and a host of other great actors.
Great Movie
Yeah we all do 😂
Of course we do....
That is one of my favorite movies ever! The director's cut is extra awesome.
And I'm pretty sure that Inception got a whole lot of its special effects ideas from Dark City.
Yes
All time best quote in a movie, “Remember, no matter where you’re going - there you are”. Buckaroo Banzai
Ink is an incredibly moving story. Great story about a parents regress and trying to change. Loved it.
I had an ischemic stroke 4 weeks ago and I am desperate for things to watch as I continue to recover. Thank you for putting this together - there is only so many times I can rewatch Succession and Mr Robot.
Sorry to hear that. Here's a couple recommendations for you. Check out "The Boys in the Boat" included w/ Prime. It released in theaters early 2024. Great sports movie about an Olympic rowing team. Also, for an intense one... check out "Chopper" also included w/ Prime right now. It's one of Eric Bana's first movies and it's easily one of his best roles of all time, Amazing! It's pretty brutal at times but it's directed by Andrew Dominik who also did "The Assassination of Jesse James" and "Killing Them Softly" so it's a little odd but I love it. For new releases I loved "The Fall Guy" which you can rent at home. I also enjoyed "Monkey Man" which is a Indian John Wick style action movie. It's also for rent or included with Peacock. Hopefully one of those helps you feel a bit better.
Hang in there.
Seen Ripley yet? Same story as the film but closer to the book and taking all the time. Calm but tense and beautiful beyond belief. Every image is a work of art worthy of Caravaggio...
Hang in there and great luck on your recovery! Cinematic entertainment has always gotten me through the hardest periods of my life and I hope it can do the same for you ❤
I wish you a speedy recovery. I binged Reacher recently; it was a fun watch!
isthatyoursomnomnom
I'm trapped in a Georgia Nursing home trying to find an apartment I can afford and I know EXACTLY what you are dealing with. I'm glad I found this!! I'm waiting for the next episodes of The Boys to watch on my Tablet. Good luck with your recovery
Buckaroo Banzai was the first VHS rental I ever did, been a fan ever since. The cast? Goldblume, Lithgow, Barkin, Weller. It can't miss. Award winning crew..... Don't pass this one up!!!
It's such a rad film. Been a favorite since it came out.
You might get a kick out of Freejack if you haven't seen it.
You forgot Christopher Lloyd, and you forgot the forgotten Lewis Smith, who was Perfect Tommy. 😆
@@CorbCorbinLewis Smith always confused me as he was in everything for a while and had the greatest face ever. Insanely good looking and with a charisma that can melt steel. He should have been at least Val Kilmer famous if you ask me.
Wherever you're going. There you are
When you said “Repo Men” i was really hoping it was the Emilio Esteves movie “Repo Man”. That would have really hit the list good.
Such a good and odd film :)
Freejack is one of my personal all-time favorite movies. If you're a GenXer please give it a try
…Like walking through a bookstore and the clerk says..”have you read this ..?” …keep it up..much appreciated
Thank you for mentioning Ink. I adore that movie, nice to see it get some love :D
Prime is horrible now. Took me forever to find Nekrotronic. Then I had to watch two minutes of ads before it even started.
I just entered it into the search bar first thing that came up..As for the ads..I just paid the extra 2 or 3 bucks for no ads. Thing with Prime your membership is for the shipping and literally get dozens of other perks like video for free.
I found it on UA-cam, Prime is awful
If you've not seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind, PLEASE DO SO NOW. He's right that it's far superior to most modern sci-fi films, at least in terms of writing, acting and directing. The effects also hold up brilliantly. I remember the thrill of watching it in the theater in the fall of '77. For those of us who were there, the one-two punch of Star Wars that summer and CE3K in the fall was the ultimate childhood experience! (For me, anyway...)
For those about to watch it for the first time (hopefully in a darkened room, on a big-screen TV, with theater-quality sound),
I envy you...
What's cool for folks my age is we've only ever seen movies like this on small screens. The first time I saw a lot of these movies was on cable tv with edits and commercials. As home theater technology and streaming services have improved, it's been fun to revisit these movies in a manner a little closer to the theatrical experience at home.
Yes, seeing Close Encounters in a theater with an unknowing audience, during its original release was an awe inspiring experience.
I like Close Encounters way better than the later E.T.
I actually remember watching The Arrival with my dad when it came out as a kid and despite it's kind of slower, more adult pace, it always stuck with me.
Always liked the Arrival. I rewatch it every few years too and it holds up for me
Great FLICK CONNECTION Darren. Appreciate the time you’ve spent, finding these gems. Look forward to your presentations, helps me on my long road of treatment for MS. Thank you again for bringing joy and happiness to us 👍👍👍
Saw Buckaroo Banzai in 3D back in the day. Crazy fun.
Interstellar is one of my all-time favorite movies. I can't count how many times I've watched it.
I re-watched it with the fam just last night. Everyone loved it.
@@DarrenVanDamI still can’t understand it all but loved it .
Interstellar is hands down the #1 greatest science fiction movie ever made in my opinion... Personally, it is my favorite movie of all time. I feel like it was specifically made to scratch my itch.
Every aspect of it is flawless. From the concept, plot, script, story and cast to the sound, music, lighting special FX and overall cinematography to the directing and production etc... it gets a 10 in all categories from me. It is one of those rare sci-fi creations where the drama / acting arguably outshines the special FX.
I remember forcing my mother, who has trouble staying awake through anything, to watch it with me. She will normally refuse to watch anything remotely weird, especially sci-fi... not to mention anything complicated or long. (If it wasn't for McConaughey and Hathaway casted, she definitely would have shut it down.) Needless to say she stayed awake the entire time and at the end she admitted that she was thoroughly entertained.
Ink is one of my favorite movies. It's low budget but wonderfully done. I love the limited dialog and visual story telling... "Something's got to stop the flow."
I am jealous of anyone that gets to watch Turbo Kid for the first time. So well done and Apple is a treat. Enjoy!
I would argue that Ink is the best low budget sci-fi movie ever made. A perfect example where the story telling masks the other faults of the movie.
The director has another film, Frame, which is also very good.
Freejack & Maximum Overdrive would be a killer drive-in combo with all the gooey goodness of chili fries, burgers and Cokes. What a nightr!!!
Ink is a personal favourite. Looking forward to Jamin's new movie, Myth of Man.
I love these breakdowns. Thank you for sharing with us fans!!!
INK is a cracking film. Every you said is perfect, but for some reason I can't put into words, it really impacted me. Watched it twice, never again since it came out. I don't need too Daz. I should but I think it my spoil it for me today. I know I am not making much sense, but it really impacted me is all I can say. Cheers from England.
We didn't know what to watch tonight. We enjoyed every single one so far. Thanks so much for all your time and effort you put in for us. Keep up the amazing work!
More than a few faves here - and speaking of "dated" sci-fi tech movies, have you seen brainstorm? It's old tech is kinda like a "inception" type neural link - Christopher Walken is soo good, actually pretty lowkey Walken - and Natalie Woods last film i believe - and the low tech actually works pretty good for 1983 efx
Ink is an astonishing work of art, emotionally stunning, and a great story. Jamin Winans, writer, producer, director, also did the musical score, and WOW does it nail it.
Just watched Radius - thanks for the recomendation!
Loved the original War of the Worlds, and also Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Something more chilling about those old movies that fancy modern cgi doesn't make up for. I don't know why the streaming services don't have a 'classics' category so people get to see the good oldies that I got to see when they happened to play on broadcast tv when I was a kid.
I love Splinter. It's one of my favorite small films.
Ink is a cool movie. So under the radar too. There are a few reviews and like one trailer reaction, but no movie reactions that I could locate.
Thanks! Great video
I’ll vouch for Radius! Awesome and unique movie.
Splinter too!
This could have been "Emilio Estevez movies that might be worth watching"
damn most of the titles in this video is unknown to me...which makes this video great coz it adds value!
a video that only suggests big titles like Aliens, Terminator 2, Star Wars, Event Horizon etc wouldn't help much coz most people already knew those movies.
great content, big thumbs up. Keep on finding these hidden gems!
Great list DVD! 🎉
Just watched MEMORIES with my 11 year old daughter, We enjoyed it, It brought up some pretty advanced philosophical conversations and was a great intro to my era of anime. I believe I was from the creator of Akira.
I was born in '65 and I remember seeing Freejack in the movie theater. That was amazing. I still remember the scene where Mick Jagger says, "I wasn't testing your loyalty to me. I was testing the accuracy of the machine." (or something like that. It's been a long time.)
That was a good line, and left Esai Morales's character with just a bit of doubt. lol
Nekrotronic is amazing! The amount of entertainment crammed into a low budget premise. Just a great watch!
Great movies! Splinter, however, is not part of Amazon Prime. You have to rent or buy it. I loved Close Encounters as a kid. Fun fact: "Barry" (kid) used to go to our church and still lives nearby.
Half the time i think u make movies just to add them to this list.. They r so good specially the low budget ones❤❤❤ also I was looking fwd to sci fi list so long.. Could u attach ur sci fi lists in description or make a playlist please🙏🙏🙏
Fantastic list. Quite I few I haven't seen going on my watch list. I know this was focused on prime... but a list of lesser known "B-movie" or low budget sci-fi of this caliber, no matter where they can be found, would be really useful.
great list Darren
Speaking of great sci-fi anime, what about Fantastic Planet? It was awarded the Grand Prix special jury prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, and in 2016, it was ranked the 36th greatest animated movie ever by Rolling Stone. Darren, please check it out!
I absolutely love Turbo Kid.
I still remember one of the tv ads: "Buckaroo Banzai and his Hong Kong Cavaliers, the toughest, most hard-rocking bar band in East Texas!"
Thank you ever so much for the suggestions. Even though I am in Germany where not all of these movies will be available ... I plan on subscribing to Prime Video for a few months again to watch the 4th season of "The Boys" and will maybe add "Paramount+" (which is possible here in Germany) to watch "Strange New Worlds". Any addition is very much appreciated. So again: Thank you for this! 🙂
Ink was amazing! Thanks for recommending!
Love Close Encounters and Interstellar...could watch either just about anytime...or listen to the soundtrack...
Freejack is my favorite movie on this list. It's only flaw was having Mick Jagger, who is NOT an actor and proves it, not that Emilio Estevez did much better honestly. It's one of the few movies I'd love to see remade, just because I like the story, but I think the movie could have been done better. That being said, I've rewatched it several times just because I enjoy it.
Looking at Prime, I'd recommend some different movies: The Beastmaster (although I've always heard it called a sword and sandal movie, it's listed as science fiction for some reason), Virtuosity (Russell Crowe really gets into the part of the bad guy), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (the best version of all), Stay Tuned (one of the most underrated and forgotten movies ever, I love this movie), and MST3K: Cave Dwellers (I really enjoy MST3K, and this is one of my top 3 of all time).
Thank you very much...
Great to see Nekrotronic make the list. Huge Ben O'Toole fan here. Wish he did more movies. Dude could pass for Tony Stark. Check out his movie Bloody Hell if you get a chance.
Nekrotronic was surprisingly great, really didn't expect to like it
Spielberg is unequaled at transforming a fictional script into convincing and compelling reality. I frequently rewatch the airport control tower scene in Close Encounters and marvel at his orchestration. Mundane activities inside the tower suddenly giving way to escalating tension. The pilots struggling to describe what they're seeing. Tower technicians talking over each other to diagnose the situation. Their intermingled comments are unintelligible adding to the chaotic situation. The pilots opting not to declare a UFO sighting. "I wouldn't know what type of report to file." Absolutely masterful.
After I saw the trailer for CE3K, my friend and I drove to LA to see it at the Cinerama Dome, because it opened like 1 or 2 weeks before everywhere else (NY got it too).
Ink is fantastic!
The Frame (same creators) is also on Prime. I liked it too and have recommended it but didn't find it nearly as memorable as Ink.
@@DarrenVanDam Thanks for the recommendation. I will check it out. Love the videos my good sir.
Close Encounters all the way !
I need me sone mashed potatoes...
I couldn't eat mashed potatoes without doing that for YEARS after first seeing Close Encounters!
@@DarrenVanDam
Same!
Valerian is one of my guilty pleasures. Watched it a few times!
I don't know if it'll help anyone, but the ui for Amazon on Playstation is the least infuriating way to watch the service.
Another great one.
Ink is amazing. So glad to see it being repped.
The opening sequence of Valerian is EPIC!
Shoutout for Wormwood! Amazing flick considering the budget especially. I do want a legit sequel. So twisted yet somehow still fun and the climax just has you longing for more! Hard to find but worth it.
Great video. I had 5 movies that I wanted to watch but damn, only one (Turbo Kid) is available on Prime in Canada. So I guess that is my movie watch tonight.
Thank you for this post,
Thanks!👍👍👍
You keep getting better at this, mate
Thank you
Close encounters is fantastic!
Project Almanac is a pretty fun watch, love it and it's in my collection
Good list, thanks. I've seen several and will now fill in the blanks. :) As far as old films go (maybe for another list as this would be endless) I have to add the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. 👽Cheers and happy viewing.
I saw Free Jack in the theaters. Love it.
Too bad that I'm currently living in Singapore, and very rarely the suggestions you make are available on the counterparts streaming platforms here. Of course, not your fault.
Having said that, I still love your watching your videos and reviews to discover movies and put them on my to-watch list.
A couple of comments on this list:
* Freejack I first watched as a teenager when it came out (90s kid here) and I loved it. I think I watched it at least 2 other times, but it has been at least 15 years. The scene at the end with the numbers (trying not to spoil) is epic!
* I also think Valerian was an awesome movie, somehow not well received by critics. The world-building is great. Some scenes are pretty epic too!
is it true that they'll chop you head off if you smoke weed over there?
Thanks for the time stamps Darren. Chris Nolan basically said Interstellar is on par with 2001 Space Odyssey XD
Ink was so soo good, I love your taste dude!
Close Encounters is epic. The Vast of Night did the same thing. Amazing endings. They put your head sideways and go "What"!!!
Close Encounters of the Third Kind is an awesome film. I’m 54 and I’ve seen the film countless times. To the point where I know the entire script off by heart and can hear 5 seconds of dialogue without seeing the screen, tell you what scene it is. Love that film
*Project Almanac was amazin, good fun!*
🤙🏽⚡️🤙🏽
Repo Men is a good shout!
Ooo will check out Memories (1995)...
Splinter was a great surprise, I accidentally found one afternoon on SYFY back in college. The Arrival has always been a favorite of mine since I saw it when it was released back in middle school. Not talked about enough.
Project Almanac is one of my favourite time travel films, i always recommend it to someone as a lesser known sci-fi film
Loved most of your picks. I thought Big Trouble In Little China & Soldier deserved a slot. Kudos.
Maximum Overdrive for the soundtrack got to love a bit of DC, yes it's a bit cheesy but that was the "Story", Close Encounters just yes for everything you said and more!!! However one of the more interesting ones I don't think I've seen but based on comments below is going to be Ink, thanks for putting this out....
I would much rather see a movie with sub-par effects and a great story, than a movie with great effects and a boring story.
Watched CE3K with 19-year old sci fi newbie daughter last weekend. Enjoyable. Good list except for Valerian. Thanks
You're right about Close Encounter of the Third Kind. It still hold up with todays special effects. Outstanding choice for number 1.
I've seen Valerian twice and totally loved it.
THANKS
You should check out a low budget sci fi movie called Dune Drifter on prime! Super highly recommend! Keep up the great content
Maximum overdrive is my favorite movie of all time. Glad to see it on your list. I hate when people talk trash about it.
I love that movie as well. I do think it's a trash movie, but it's fun trash, and I don't see a problem with that. I'd rather watch 10 movies like Maximum Overdrive than any 1 of the usual Oscar bait films.
thx
I love your THEY LIVE shirt! 😎👍
Interesting, I have seen all 20 of these recommended movies. Some several times.
Just watched 'Radius'. I dont know if it was the Jane and Liam chemistry but it was very good. Would love to see this remade with a larger budget and some script/plot refinement - but same main character actors.
I have to agree with Interstellar. I bought it digitally when it first came out and couldn't understand it. Now that I have watched it a few times, I totally love it and understand the meanings within. It is a favorite to get me through the end of a workout when I can't find anything else to watch 🙂
Thanks!
I’m always on the hunt for good smart sci-fi, interstellar and some others from your list are some of my favourite. I also loved “the man from earth” very low budget and the almost the entire thing happens in a living room but so clever and smart that it keeps you glued to the screen. Any other smart sci-fi you can recommend?
Nekrotronic is terrific!!! It and Ink really punch above their weight.
I really enjoyed Project Almanac (I know it wasn't at the top of your list but I like cheesy movies like that). Thanks for the recommendations.
I absolutely love Valerian . I didn't like it the first time I saw it but then upon a second watch fell in love with it . I have watched it more than most movies. Definitely a fun movie !
Same here. On my first viewing, I actually feel asleep lol. But then decided to give it a second chance, since I have rewatched Besson's Fifth Element and Leon countless times. Now I love the film! My main gripe has to do with the casting leads. I think he could have picked better actors over DeHaan and Delavinge. They weren't right for their respective parts.
@@MrRoda8143I'm actually watching fifth element right now 😂
I saw Radius a couple years ago and really liked it
The effects in Close encounter look much better than the aweful CGI from Hollywood recently. How is that possible??? Omg the acting in this movie!!! The kid at the dinner table... needs an Oscar
