This song and Love Affair are so beautifully crafted it's hard to believe. Regina Spektor and Tom Waits are capable or portraying stories in their songs in a better way than most books I've ever read.
Cool hearing On the Radio in it's early stages. You can tell it's new to people. Cuz they're laughing to the November Rain verse and not singing a long to the uh oh's at the end.
+Old Bird Wing You know, I never actually thought that "she'd rather do her own thing", because if she is physically capable of paying for life insurance and decides not to in order to afford life's luxuries, that's quite a horrible metaphor because it means she deliberately leaves her children childless. I always took the song to be more of a commentary on the American health service, which leaves children motherless because working class families often can't afford treatment like chemotherapy. Therefore, I see Benjamin Franklin as representing both life insurance, and America as a whole. Hence, when he "babysits four of [her] kids", it is representative of the fact that it is the American health system and the American government which is responsible for the fact that she can no longer look after her kids (hence why she needs a metaphorical "babysitter").
@undeadgods i agree with your point; that was my first impression of her. however, miss spektor's said that she has written many many songs, most of which are just abstract and have little or nothing to do with her life.
I wish she played this live more!
This song is so hard she can’t even cover it….
my favorite regina spektor song.

Then I guess you've been reading the wrong books. But yes, Regina is awsome.
