Mozart Piano Sonata in A Major. Think I received an 'A' on the exam... knew everything he was doing. Narrated for my wife, she didn't like my monotone though (grin). My voiceover needs improving. /RayK
I thoroughly enjoyed todays lesson . I was so proud of myself for being able to name off the steps as you went along. Thank you for such a delightful time.
Me imagining Julian's voice: Now for this painting I've decided to do what's called an interleaved lining. Also me: Yes Julian, I concur, the rigid PET film will prevent the canvas from moving due to changes in humidity
How incredible. As I'm watching I could swear I hear your voice. For all of us, who follow you from the begining, we just know what the next step of the process is. Thank youfor making us part of your amazing job, Julian. Now, back to the video, 'cause I haven't finished watching it yet, but I just had to comment.
Your work is truly an inspiration. If I watch other YT “restoration” videos, I find myself so disappointed in their lack of education, knowlege or training. I am screaming at them…it needs a hot treatment, no you have to face the painting, where is your isolation layer? I knew nothing of this subject matter and I am so glad to see a master who makes every project transformatory. I cannot even draw good stick figures. So when I see such talent and caring manner you treat all of the projects, I am in awe! Thanks for such great content.
I really appreciate you posting both a narrated and a non-narrated version! I watch the narrated one first to understand everything, and then I put this one on in the background. The brush sounds are so satisfying. Edit: Well, not only just the brush sounds, the scraping and other sounds as well.
You are such a good teacher. I understood everything you were doing, why you were doing it, and thought "he needs to do xyz" right before you did xyz. I feel like i could come work for you with 0 experience. 😂😂😂
Stunning restoration, I have watched a LO T of your videos and all show great talent but this one is exceptional. Perhaps it's the colors or the removal of all the cracks and curled paint but...WOW. You are without a doubt one of, if not THE, best painting restorers in the world.
This one is for the loyal viewers, who have learned every step of the restoration process and can say why they are being done. One thing I do wish for is some discussion about the painting itself. It's nice to get a little art education with the restoration. The creation and the life of the painting is something we can all appreciate. This is one of the paintings where you could see the potential for a beautiful work of art, and the final reveal lived up to expectation.
There is a certain intellectual pleasure in being a long time viewer, and knowing exactly what is going on at each step. You have taught us well, Sensei.
Channeling a distant Irish Granny I heard myself saying "Holy Mother of God" in exclamation upon seeing the initial condition this work was in...then of course: Julian knows what he's doing and so step by step as others I remembered the terms and process we've been taught through these videos. What a wonderful gift for the season.
For those of us by now very familiar with your techniques, this 'silent movie' version (with occasional expressive acting!) was particularly engrossing. The music was no bad substitute for speech either. Loved it.
It was so satisfying to actually know what part of the process in which you were engaged without narration! I have learned so much about art restoration from watching you work. And that was a typically glorious outcome.
I love the attention to detail and how the paint was touched up. The shadow on the edge of the hand looks so much better than before. The restoration was a work of art.
Having watched years of this restoration work, I have to say it is very informative, well produced and that Julian Baumgartner has a great love for his work. He makes it look so easy tho also shows the hard work involved. Thanks for all the wonderful videos and work
I really appreciate the explanations about Julian's thoughts and the reasoning behind each step. I enjoyed this video, and I would like to mention, respectfully, that I prefer it with narration.
I've been following you for many years now, and I've seen you do some amazing restorations...but this one feels like one of the more impressive and transformative ones you've done in a long time! Amazing work!
Thank you. It's been a long day, month, quarter, year full of challenges. I'm exhausted. This video was soooo welcome, taking me back to the early years when your ASMR smoothed my frazzled nerves. I needed this tonight.
Love this! I agree with everyone else who said this. We can still hear you explaining each step as it goes. I was mentally ticking-off steps as it went. Beautiful restoration!
36:05 - My screen is frozen at this timestamp and I am staring in amazement at the transformation of this portrait painting. With much appreciation my mind has envisioned another time and place. Simply incredible!
Wow. What a gorgeous transformation. I really enjoy your narrations but it was fun to watch the process and understand what you were doing and why. Have a wonderful holiday season!
I recently saw an artist line recommend a product to use over paintings she was making on paper. The name of the product sent off alarms. I looked at the main ingredients and one of them was something you mentioned used to be used. Sure enough, it would cause yellowing! You teach us well!
My wife and I just loved this one. And I'm happy to say that I was able to explain each step of the process to her because I've watched your videos so much! Really good stuff, thanks.
Julian, I have been watching your videos for about 4 yrs and Ive seen you work miracles. This will be one more. Well you did not disappoint. As always you came through. Beautiful work. I like the fact that you did not narrate this time. Its fun to just watch from time to time and try to see if I know your next step. I did fairly well this time. Thanks for making your videos interesting and entertaining. 😊
One of your best videos. No words needed your process on the video speaks for itself! It was interesting that the music was in the time frame of the painting. Thank you Julian
Julian: what a lovely piece of art work. The restoration is MasterWork, as usual. Who ever owns it, is a very lucky person. It was fun watching you go through the steps. I remembered what you were using and doing. Carol from California
I have watched his videos so often, I knew all the steps! I could hear him narrating it - he says the same phrases for the treatment he is going to use. I loved this.!
I think I fully am with the majority of the other commenters here, I knew each step, why you were taking it, the little comments you normally make through each silly or time consuming step. Litterally, this is truly one of my favourite videos because it enstills the confidence in my own knowledge about anything art restoration that you've taught me through the years of watching. Thank you so much Julian, you're truly a human that will go down in history for teaching ordinary people all over the world, the importance of doing what we can, taking care of Art that has meaning to the individual, and the importance of the small things, that may not be noticed by others, but are things that keep what you do, to who you are, and you don't change it for anyone. Example, cutting the corners of the extra canvas, and tacking and folding the extra canvas. That is something I would personally notice if I were to ever look at the back of any panting you had worked on, and I would know it was you, and be honored to be in it's presence ❤️
This is the best Christmas gift thank youuuuu! Been using ASMR to fall asleep lately as this is a difficult time of year for me and this is top tier. And thank you for no continuous background music!
I think i've watched so much that i understand the process and outcome and whereas i'm always impressed this really amazed me the painting was so damaged and dirty i was sure there would be a part that couldn't be conserved but when i saw the final results i was in complete awe!!!!
I also enjoyed anticipating each next step! For anyone new to this channel, please look at any of his numerous earlier restorations to hear his explanations of each step.
Thank you so much for this video it takes an artist to save art and this warms my heart an was good for my soul. May God Bless you and yours especially during this Christmas season.
I could not even see the halo of stars with all the cracking and crazing of the paint surface. This reminded me of a phrase my first boss ever said to me in regards to painting the fender of a used car he bought at an auction. "I need some ocean white paint". When I asked him why he wanted white paint on a powder blue car, he said, " it gets the waves out".
Compared to other conservation vids I have seen Julian seems more thorough, more professional. Even dresses like he takes pride in his work. Professional through & through.
Very well done Julian, just.....VERY well done !...And thank you, not just for your highly skilled craftsmanship, but also for your time and excellence in producing these interesting and educational videos.
Your work is so incredibly interesting I did not miss your voice over at all. Interestingly enough, I found myself narrating your steps. Thank you for a great silent movie.
Julian la. The work you do is nothing short of genius. I am a bug fan of your work and look forward to your videos. That said, something very important was missing from this one. Your voice. I consider your videos educational and inspirational. I like hearing your analysis of the piece and how you're planning to restore it. Your narrative makes the videos more educational and entertaining. Maurice from Canada 🇨🇦
What a wild meta experience. I have to admit that I watched it on 2x speed, but the value of having some level of understanding at each step was pretty fun.
I was not aware i had an internal julian voice, because i heard him narrating every step for the full 36 minutes including a squarespace interval.. i have been watching this channel way too much 🤭
So, I heard that before Art restauration was a thing the population thought that the „old Masters“ of the Renaissance actually painted in sepia brown colours because of aestetical reasons. It wenz as far as Art teachers demanding from their sudents to paint with said brownish taints - only to later discover that the discolouring stems from dust, smoke and other influences. Now my unpopular opinion: I actually like Renaissance paintings way better WITH the varnish as it seems so much more subdude, elegant and even kind of modern! Just as I adore white marble statues but I am completely indifferent to them when painted as they originally were… That being said, I love the whole cleanibg process of course. SO satisfying!
@@quenoselecruzenadie Yeah I agree. The overall state and the Canvas looks way newer - there might even be modern pigments used. I was referring to the overall style in which it was painted and the fact that my personal taste let me sometimes prefer the state of a painting before the conservation actions.
I really missed your commentary. I was previously watching a video from 5 years ago with no narration. I prefer your eloquent narration. Thank you for your amazing work!
Words for what Julian? Unbelievable how you manage to give meaning to every moment. Even though I'm an atheist, watching this video of yours, without any words, just the sound of the materials and music, is magical. I've been a follower of your channel for years. I've always been incredibly curious about the smell of the materials you use. In this video this curiosity was even more heightened. What does years of layers of dirt smell like? What do fish gel, varnishes and paints smell like? Being able to travel through your eyes would certainly be an epic moment.
This was fun. "Examining" the damage, then seeing if I could tell what you would do. I wouldn't want to always be deprived of your narration, but this was a fun change.
Love the ASMR uploads Julian. A beautifully resorected painting, currently let down by a what seems a modern, plastic looking frame. Married with the right frame it will be a whole new wow factor, and elevate it to where it should be ❤
This is like our end of year exam, we all need to email what methods he used and why he used them.
i could still hear him😉😁
Right! I'm feeling quite smug about acing it too.😊
Haha I was just going to type something similar 😂
And is that Salieri?
Mozart Piano Sonata in A Major. Think I received an 'A' on the exam... knew everything he was doing. Narrated for my wife, she didn't like my monotone though (grin). My voiceover needs improving. /RayK
I found myself narrating this in my head…😂
Me too. Except I didn't know if I should say kozo washi or washi kozo.
Same here 😅
And it's just as fascinating every time!
